A room in a London house causes madness and death. A train ride on the continent results in a theft. A friend's dream foretells of murder on a couple farm in Wales. Wealthy households and lifestyles are depicted in these unsettling short stories which are set at the turn-of-the twentieth century.

These stories could have been rounded out with more plot details and psychological connections.
