Florence Scovel Shinn was a new thought spiritual teacher and a metaphysical writer. She is best known for her new thought and self help works The Game of Life And How To Play It; Your Word Is Your Wand; and The Secret Door To Success, all of which are contained in this one volume reference. Florence Scovel Shinn includes biblical quotes in her writings along with anecdotal explanations of her understanding of God and man. However Florence Scovel Shinn's philosophy centers on the power of positive thought and usually includes instructions for verbal or physical affirmation. Some consider Shinn's work to be of the religion & spirituality genre and more so of the new age & spirituality genre. It appears that Shinn's work contained in this one volume reference has influenced popular best selling books such as The Secret. While she is a big part of the self help and new thought movement, Florence Scovel Shinn's writings are in the tradition of accomplished new thought teachers Charles Fillmore and Phineas Quimby.

Florence Scovel Shinn (September 24, 1871, Camden, New Jersey – October 17, 1940) was an American artist and book illustrator who became a New Thought spiritual teacher and metaphysical writer in her middle years. In New Thought circles, she is best known for her first book, The Game of Life and How to Play It (1925).

Her books "Your Word Is Your Wand" and "The Game of Life and How To Play It" were released as audiobooks in 2014 and 2015 respectively and were narrated by actress Hillary Hawkins.

Shinn is considered part of the New Thought movement, as her writings follow in the tradition of Phineas Quimby (1802–1866), Emma Curtis Hopkins (1849–1925), and both Charles Fillmore (1854–1948) and Myrtle Fillmore (1845–1931), co-founders of the Unity Church.

Motivational author Louise Hay acknowledges her as an early influence.
