Cameron "Candy" Michelson Jr. doesn't have time for distractions. He's too busy restructuring the red-light district into an adult playland for City M and running the Hidden Gem. But when his companion, Avery "Ivy" Laurent, grows closer to Jack, an investigator for the Institute of Scientific Study, Candy can't hide his jealousy. Nor his own interest in Jack.

Ivy is crazy about Jack, but he's also in love with Candy. Ideally, Ivy longs for all three of them to be together, but between Jack's nonexistent libido and Candy's supercharged needs, Ivy isn't sure how to make it work.

When Jack gets called in to help the City M police department investigate a series of violently murdered companions, both Candy and Ivy brace for trouble. But nothing prepares them for Candy becoming the prime suspect.

In a future landscape of corrupt government officials, brutal BDSM crimes, and a host of dark creatures, Candy, Ivy, and Jack must work together to find the killer, save themselves--and learn how to trust each other.

An action packed end to a lively series.

In the final installment of the Hidden Gem series, Candy Land, we have Candy, Ivy and Jack trying to figure out if they can make a triad relationship work in the midst of the customary level of chaos that's to be expected in City M.

Can their differences strengthen their bond or will they be their undoing?

My expertise with asexuality is exactly nil, so I've no idea if this is an accurate portrayal but I will say I liked Jack. He's plainspoken and straightforward with Candy. Ivy, on the other hand, is very intuitive and accepting of Jack, but Candy is hypersexual and baffled by his paucity.

It was the little boy hiding his heart behind the badge that made Candy want Jack so bad. He wanted to take that fear away, show him that while the world might not be safe, he wasn't alone anymore.

However, in this final installment as with the first two the romance rides shotgun to the action/adventure. There are a couple of sex scenes and the last one was sweltering, so I'm not complaining. Also, it should be noted that the BDSM tag is misleading. Candy is a paid dominant and BDSM is alluded to and discussed, but hardly warrants the tagging if that's a deterrent.

 photo the_year_of_tiger_by_heise_zpsuurwtaow.jpg

This installment has an epic battle at the end that veered into Game of Thrones territory which maybe was a little pandering but IT'S GAME OF THRONES! I liked it. If you're not a GoT fan... I'm just going to pretend you don't have HBO and this travesty will be rectified at some point. Digressing again. Apologies. Like GoT, this installment is quite bloody and, shockingly enough, I believe it contains more nudity than GoT.

The pacing is fairly steady, though at times repetitive especially with regard to the eating thing and its necessity.

My biggest complaint about Cardinal Sins was how scattered it was. Candy Land was assembled better, but I could've done with less head hopping and more focus on the triad. Though I do understand the objective of tidily wrapping up the series. Actually, the fraternal connection and platonic love between Aki and Candy was what I found most touching.

There were a couple of plot points that gave me pause and some other things I thought were a bit outlandish that I'm not going into for fear of spoiling.

Overall an entertaining and ambitious end to an impressive series.

Recommend to fans of dystopia, high or urban fantasy who appreciate loads of creativity.

To say I have been salivating waiting for this final novel in Lissa Kasey's unbelievable 'Chronicles of City M' series would be an understatement. I loved the first two books for their originality, sheer descriptive beauty, and characters I fell in love with. Now, finally, in 'Candy Land' I get the story of Candy, Ivy, and Jack - three more different individuals would be hard to find - and I couldn't wait to see what genius of a story the author had in store for them. I will strongly recommend that you read the first two books in this series as, otherwise, much of this finale will confuse you.

Candy likes to be in control. He's also supremely frustrated that Ivy and Jack spend a day a week together. Candy doesn't get jealous, so what is going on? When he finds out, according to Ivy, that Jack has no interest in sex, Candy is flummoxed, to say the least. Who doesn't like sex? Since Ivy loves both Candy and Jack, he ups his game to get the two of them to spend more time getting to know each other.

Jack is a bit of a conundrum in this threesome. He's asexual, and has difficulty understanding the concepts of love and even friendship. He had a very difficult childhood in the slums of the South before his parents sold him. He was experimented on and now he's an A-M. There's still a lost little boy hiding inside Jack, one that Candy and Ivy want nothing more than to comfort. Ivy is the peacemaker, so to speak, who wants the three of them together. He is constantly trying to take care of both of them to the best of his ability.

Now I'm going to veer from my "normal" review type mainly because so much of this book contains enormous spoilers, and the last thing I want to do is ruin anyone else's enjoyment of this incredible novel. Instead, I'm going to focus on all the things that made my heart break, made me sigh, made me laugh, and made me cry. Essentially, everything that made me fall in love with this world all over again.

I will admit, unabashedly, that I love the Hidden Gem series by Lissa Kasey. The third installment, Candy Land, is by far the best yet. Why? Simply put, this novel gave us more depth on the main characters that have made such an impact in every other story. This installment was a natural evolution of different plot points that had been left open-ended. It was the most satisfying of stories because you saw yet more relationships develop and long lasting ones grow and change. It was epic in that it covered incredible ground—showing exactly what the Psi’s /Am’s were capable of and how much they morphed beyond just winged creatures. Woven through all this action was the murder investigation of whores who had been brutally attacked in a series of macabre BDSM scenes.

Here is where the real genius of author Lissa Kasey stood out—she took so many loose threads from previous novels, plus added new plot points, and managed to give each one it’s much needed page time. All the while, she did it with such finesse that the reader was able to keep up with every ball she thrust aloft.

In Candy Land we see a new Candy Michelson, Jr.—he is more businesslike, taking over for the former boss at the brothel, Hidden Gem. Candy is expanding the business, making it more elite, less tawdry, and creating an oasis in City M by tearing down former whore houses to create everything from better brothels to scenic parks. However, his friends feel Candy has lost some of his joy, along with his crazy colored hair and flamboyant dress. In particular, Ivy longs for the old Candy—the one who was less involved in business and more involved in loving Ivy. While they might not agree on everything, Ivy and Candy are in accord about Jack, an investigator, who can best be described as very quiet and asexual. Given that Candy needs sex like most people need to breathe, Ivy struggles to see how he can bring the two people he cares most about together.

Before you worry that this is a typical ménage novel, think again. The beauty of this unfolding relationship is how two very sexual men deal with their partner, who is more of a cuddler than an active sexual participant. Lissa Kasey brilliantly exposes how these three can fit together and all come out satisfied when their sexual needs are so vastly different. What Jack needs is intimacy on a different level—one where simple things like holding each other as they sleep, or mere touch, suffice. Yet, he is also exceptionally tuned into what his partners need and provides them with enough sexual interaction so that all three of them are satisfied. It is a beautiful coupling each and every time these three have page time.

Beyond the fascinating people in this novel, the story is packed with action, fraught with tension and, at times, gut-wrenching. More than once, there is the real possibility that a main figure may not make it to the end of this installment. More than once, my heart was in my throat with the fear that someone I had come to love in this series could possibly not survive the onslaught of hostile forces meant to tear City M apart. What an incredible storyteller Lissa Kasey is to run several plot points simultaneously and never let any of them unravel.

The Hidden Gem series is a fantasy lover’s dream! The created world, larger than life characters, and intricate storylines make this one of the best series out there today. This third installment, Candy Land, has it all: romance, suspense and heart stopping action! I highly recommend it to you.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

Candy Land is the third book in Lissa Kasey’s Hidden Gem series and the magic of this book is how dependent it is on the first two. While this is more of Candy’s story, it is also an ensemble book as all of the characters return to not only finish their own stories, but to add to Candy’s. The author not only weaves in personal relationships, but also continues on with the world building and the overall larger arc of the government and those that have been genetically mutated.

The previous book already gave us background on Candy, but here he has a new look and a new purpose and Ivy misses Candy’s color and uniqueness. We then get more on Jack as well as Ivy. Both of their stories are filled with despair, but they have both come far and are managing the best they can with remarkably uplifted spirits. Jack is a loner. He’s survived for years as an unwillingly participant in a lab for human testing, and even though he’s an investigator tracking down brutal crimes, he likes the quieter things in life. He likes companionship and cuddling and enjoys reading to Ivy under a blanket. He is able to give Ivy, and then Candy, what they need but will never suggest or initiate physical intimacy.

So a portion of the story is the three men figuring out how they can have a relationship. There is a strong connection that develops between all three of them due to many intense circumstances. Another portion of the story is City M and how it is evolving right along with its inhabitants. The story is filled with fantasy and sci-fi elements and answers are revealed to long-held questions that have had an arc throughout the entire series. Aki is still a critical element and his past and continued evolution are also in the forefront of the story.

Review:
Well I am pretty sure that this is the last book of the Hidden Gem Series. I may cry. I will miss these characters so much, that I may just have to read this series again. I read so many books that they tend to fade from my memory quickly. I don’t think that this will happen with this series. I loved every character that was part of the Hidden Gem family. I will definitely have to check out other books by this author. The plot of this book has Candy growing the Hidden Gem club and growing the red light district into a cleaner adult playground while Paris builds his casino and hotel. There is a little jealousy going on between Candy, Ivy and Jack, but when suspicions fall on Candy for a string of murders appearing to be BDSM related. They all must work together to find the real killer. To make matters worse, there is an attack coming towards City M and Aki may be at the center of it. The end of this series brings all the chemistry, passion and heat to a chaotic ending. There is so much going on, I don’t know how the author kept it all straight and flowing so well. Loved the ending with its final showdown. Aki and Candy are pretty amazing. I loved how Ms. Kasey developed these characters, always leaving something hidden for us the reader, to discover.

Four and a half stars!
I absolutely loved this final book in the trilogy. It brought everything full circle so you could see exactly where all of the pieces lined up and how everything that we learned in the first two books was connected.
I loved getting to see Candy, Jack, and Ivy come together and form a relationship. These three are so good together. You can feel the affection and care even before they’re all ready to admit their feelings. Candy’s response to Jack’s asexuality was funny if a little sad. It’s like he just couldn’t comprehend someone not wanting sex and then how to connect with someone without sex involved. But once he got it he was so wonderfully supportive of giving Jack what he needed and wanted. The scene where he talks with Hack about attraction was beautiful. The way Ms. Kasey wrote it was amazing. You could feel Candy’s insecurity coming through the page. Ivy was so sweet with his almost innocence. Part of me cheered for Candy and Jack to shelter him. But when he got all fierce and protective of his men, oh my word! I was in awe of how far he was willing to go to ensure they were safe. I think Jack was my favorite though. He grew so much in the story. The way he goes from insulated and isolated to considering people family was such a wonderful spreading of his wings. The way he settles into his new life and his new outlook was so well described.
The way the plot flowed and all of the clues brought together for everyone to see and find out what happened was so amazing. I got caught up in the story and couldn’t put it down. As someone that has loved this trilogy from the start it was the perfect way to end the series. All of the questions I had about the why, how, who, and what next were answered. It was done in a way that made me continue to love all of the characters and the setting. I’m sad to say goodbye to the world Ms. Kasey created. It is so encompassing I kind of want to go there. Though maybe without me having to change to be a part of it. But the story is complete and you get a beautiful happy ending where you know everyone is going to not only survive, they’re going to thrive in the world they are a part of. I would never say no to more books with all of these characters. But with the way things end, there’s not really any story left to tell. And that makes me immensely happy.

First, let me preface this review by stating that this is my first foray into the world of urban fantasy. I’ve read a handful of paranormal books – a few shifters, some vampires, witches and warlocks. I’ve read a couple of Lissa’s books (writing as Sam Kadence) and really loved them so I thought this was as good a place as any to start with the fantasy genre. Her writing was just as good here as it was in the other books I’ve read. The stories were unlike any other I’ve read although there were some similarities in the romance department with the alpha males protecting their loved ones (although these alphas have a bit more bite to their protection), as well as some some bdsm components . I loved most of the characters – Aki, Shane, Candy, Paris, Rain, Ivy, Jack and even some of the guards at the Gem. Each of them is strong in their own ways, even if they are submissive in nature. The bad guys were great characters too…even though you hate them. One thing that took some getting used to was the reference of all the companions of the Gem and other brothels as whores. That just doesn’t seem like a positive to me so it made me cringe a bit throughout all 3 books.

I loved seeing Jack, Ivy and Candy develop a relationship. I’m not sure which of those three is my favorite; I liked them all so much.

The story also has a mystery/thriller subplot that has a lot of Jack’s attention through the book.
This book definitely should not be read as a standalone. I think you would be quite lost if you attempted to. Each story builds upon the previous and the characters are all woven together.

Definitely a must read series!

Another intense addition to the series. A bit too much politics, sex, and confusing back story. Had to find my "suspended disbelief" in the final battle. My least favorite addition to the series, but a must for fans.

Candy Land is the third and final book in the Hidden Gem series by Lissa Kasey. This series has been a bit of a mixed bag for me, but I have mostly enjoyed it. In particular I really liked the post apocalyptic world and the various magical and weird creatures within it. For this book in particular, I quite enjoyed the three way relationship development between Candy, Ivy, and Jack. After Cardinal Sins I knew that Candy and Ivy were a sure thing, but the addition of Jack worked really well for everyone involved. I also like the different POVs we got from all of the cast of characters, not just the main MCs. I did however find myself a bit bored of the political hostile takeover storyline. I wished there was more development in the murder plot and more of the bureaucratic back and forth happened off page. All in all, a pretty original series that despite being slightly weaker in some areas, ended solidly with an enjoyable and gratifying finale.

Dark Dystopian Paranormal MM

3.5 stars!

This is the final book in this series but due to an overarching plot I suggest reading in order.

Book 3 was better than book 1 but not as good as book 2. I found I didn't really like this the newest throuple and, as other reviews pointed out, this author likes to give you everything and the kitchen sink. We have kink, MMM, every kind of paranormal being I can think of, multiple couples, and multiple plots. It was too much for me. It could have used an editor to say focus.

I liked the idea if this crazy dystopian world. I liked the pseudo sci-fi/paranormal mystery. I liked the world building.

Overall, this was a dark and interesting story. Some elements were too much but if you can overlook that it is a good read!

This series is intriguingly, intricate, hot and filled with love and passion.

This series kept me glued to my Kindle App. I couldn't put it down. The intricacies of this world are amazingly well thought out and kept me glued to the next bit of the twist. The main characters drew me in and thrilled with the challenge's and love pouring through. I have now read every book on Kindle by this author and can't wait for more.

Love the whole series

Great characters with excellent plot and world building. This is basically the conclusion of the series (crying) though there is a short to follow. One of Lissa's best, really enjoyed the growth and progression of characters, truly wish there was more, have read all books multiple times and just keep.going back for more, always starts as a comfort read when to late or tired to start some new and end up rereading whole series again.

Great series

I don’t usually care for post apocalyptic reading but this was awesome! Well thought out, frequent twists and turns, not slow at all. And juicy. Loved all the guys. I could use more of this world, if the author chooses to continue or branch out.

Ngl, I kinda got tired of the death thing, but since Candy has the most dramatic one of all, I'll give it a pass, Lol. Also, I've been hooked on Candy ever since book 1, so this might be biased but I have to say that this last book is the best one for me!

My Review ~

Candy Land is the 3rd and final release in the Hidden Gem series. This is not a standalone book so it really should only be read in series order. That being said I did not read the series in order, and realized half way through that even though I have all the books, I somehow missed reading Cardinal Sins. But that really did not deter my enjoyment of this book in the slightest.

So I really want to talk about the plot of this one with someone.. so please HURRY UP AND READ IT!!! Seriously, there are a lot of twists, turns, and some intriguing plot points that develop in this story. Pay close attention to the cover of the book, do you see those wings in the foreground? Keep those wings in mind as you read because that is one of those intriguing plot points. Well at least for me it was a killer, intriguing plot point.

Most of Candy Land focuses on the relationship developing between Candy, Ivy, and Jack which is intertwined with the investigation that Jack is working on. The investigation hits pretty close to home for everyone in the group as the killer that Jack is trying to find is targeting prostitutes. The killings are grisly and whoever the killer might be they are using BDSM tools and props with their kills. Of course Candy is one of the top Doms in the city and the police, against Jack's word, set their eyes on Candy as a suspect. The rest of the story I will leave for everyone to read and discover on their own because anything more that I'd share would be spoilers for some big plot points.

So what can I say about Candy Land other than I absolutely devoured it and wanted more when it was finished. I really need to go back through and re-read all of the books in the series just because they are that good. Lissa Kasey really gets the sci-fi/fantasy aspects to her stories amazingly right. I grew up feeding my reading addiction with authors like Anne McCaffrey and Mercedes Lackey. I can honestly say I would hold this up against a Valdemar book in terms of characterization, world building, and pacing of the story. Even on this, the third and final book in the series, the author continues world building, and adding depth and growth to her characters. That is classic aspects to the best in the sci-fi/fantasy genre.

Then of course there is the relationship aspect added to the fantasy elements. You've got Jack, who's asexual, Candy who's hypersexual, and then Ivy who's in between both of them. Getting the dynamics to work amongst these three takes a lot of skill. I really enjoyed watching Ivy break down Jack's walls, and then work on Candy to bring him around to looking at Jack as someone more than just a friend. Ivy may be sweet but he's got both his men wrapped around his finger, and I absolutely loved that, and love the three of them together.

I could rave about Candy Land until I'm blue in the face but the best way to experience it is to pick it up and read it. It's so worth the read, and even a re-read or three to catch all the little things you may have missed the first read through. I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves a good urban fantasy with strong characters, and a solid, well written storyline.

Review can be read at It's About The Book

This cover is gorgeous! It’s so so pretty. Candy Land is book 3 of this series. You definitely have to read these in order. Each book has a new couple for the love story but the story arcs are carried on throughout. The world building is fantastic and intricate. The characters are vivid. Their pasts are revealed in pieces and really do make the man in this book.

Candy Land features the loner AM/shifter and detective Jack, Candy the beautiful dom whore and Ivy the oh so sweet boy with the ability to control plants Candy saved in the last book. The three of them have a connection of sorts born of the time they spent together in quarantine during the outbreak in book 2. In this book they come together in a three way relationship. It’s not exactly normal by most people’s standards but for them it works. Jack isn’t a sexual being but he cares for both of the other men. He will have sex if they want it but he doesn’t initiate or look down on them for sex playing such an important part of their lives. Candy and Ivy are very sexual. They’ve been having sex since Ivy came to the Gem. The part that’s new in this book are the emotions they all admit to having for each other and adding Jack to the mix. Both Candy and Ivy are companions and have no intention of stopping. Jack is fine with this also. I’m generally not a fan of manage but for these characters it worked. They really did seem happier together.

Normally the romance takes center stage for me but in this installment the plot was excellent. There was so much revealed in the last book. I thought I learned so much and them bam! Things get totally shaken up. This book takes everything a step further. What you think you know, you probably don’t. This entire series is about government conspiracies and cover ups. Power struggles. Prejudice. Human experimentation gone horribly wrong. I love how I never really know what’s coming next.

Parts of this did get a bit confusing. The evolving A-Ms and Psi were hard to visualize. Giant worm snakes with wings? For me this part of the story became a bit too indulgent in the creativity department. I want to follow along. At this point I have no idea what to expect when it comes to what these guys can turn into and what powers they have. I guess for me that’s good and bad. I don’t like just anything happening on page. It has to fit somewhere with the rules and information I’ve been given. I guess that could just be me but parts of this book were just too out there.

So the romance was okay for me. Nothing memorable and certainly not my my favorite of the series. The plot and story lines were very interesting. I like forming all the connections between the characters and the things that happened in previous books. That more than anything kept my attention when other parts of the story seemed to drag or go off into crazy morphing creatures. Basically this books had some great highs but also some lows. I just wish I had a better grasp of what the characters super abilities were. If you’ve read the rest of the series you’ll want to pick this one up.

This book is the culmination of a trilogy that I have thoroughly enjoyed. I really don’t think this book can be read alone because it ties up a lot of loose ends and there are things that just can’t be explained in one book.
I have no intention of rehashing the story, first because it’s too complex and second because it takes you no time to go check out the blurbs.
The characters in all three books are very well drawn and utterly unique. From the detective, Shane who knows exactly what he is to darling little Aki who, until this book, had no idea what he was. There’s a mermaid, an extremely complex character who might be a vampire, a cat shifter (kind of), a wolf shifter, someone who makes flowers grow – and then there’s Candy.
Candy isn’t the most complex character but he is fascinating, not least because of the way he’s grown through the three books. He started off as almost a side character to Aki’s star, but grew from a ‘mere’ whore to…well you’re going to have to read the books to find the incredible role he’s built for himself and so adeptly fills.
I have to say that my favourite character was Aki. From the first time we met him shivering in a doorway to the moment he really comes into his own, he’s captivated me and I’ve gone on a terrifying and heart–breaking journey with him. He’s a proper little imp who can’t be left alone for five minutes. He’s been dead, experimented on, is unable to die from the brain cancer that keeps cropping up and endures unbelievable suffering with absolute grace. He’s a gentle little thing, but threaten someone he loves and he turns into a monster – literally. I absolutely adore him.
Another character I utterly adore is Ivy who is, in many ways, similar but in many more completely different. As his relationship with Candy and Jack develop I find myself rooting for him more and more.
The storyline from beginning to end of these three books is complex, unique and compelling. There just aren’t the words to describe as it moves from chilling, to sweet; from heartbreaking to inspiring. Everyone has their problems, everyone is far from perfect, but everyone is there for each other in what becomes a close–knit community; an incredibly unlikely family that just seems to work against all the odds.
If you only read three books for the rest of the year make it this three. There are so many twists and turns between the pages it sometimes has your head reeling but think of them as a box of candy – each sweet, each unique and each leaving a delicious flavour in your mouth. Be careful, though, because you know what happens when you finish a box of candy. You find yourself looking for more and the withdrawal can be unpleasant. It’s one of those series you want to read but don’t at the same time. You’ll want to get immersed in the world and its characters, but you won’t want it to end.
I advise coffee and tissues.

I received advanced copies of all three books in order to write a balanced review. I bought all three books because I loved them SO much and didn't think it was fair to hang on to the ARC's

This was great fun, in an incredibly over-the-top way. It felt a lot like Ms. Kasey wanted to include every possible paranormal ability and combine them with every possible shifter form imaginable. It was a lot. But thoroughly entertaining.

This world is fascinating, and it was great to see how it continued to evolve in his book.

Some Favorite Quotes:
"History is one thing, but fiction shows us the hopes and dreams of those in the past."

"He's dead," Ivy said weakly.
"Aki dies pretty regularly. I've died a time or two."

and evolution had decided it was time to make people a little less breakable.

"Go politick already. Make him fear you with pretty words."

Jack tilted his head at his friend. "Did you threaten someone with your boyfriend? Did they realize you could probably eat them too?"
"That would be uncivilized," Shane said.
"But pointing out your boyfriend could do so is not?"
