I am current reading this book. I have always been intrigued by very successful entrepreneurs. And I would like to know the challenges that he\she had to face in order to succeed. I am more interested in the failures rather than success because I can learn from their mistakes.

093-Li Ka-shing-Meihua Chen-Biography-2005
Barack

" Steady in the search for development, development does not forget the sound."

Li Ka-Shing's Full Book, first published in China in 2005. Biographical books. It tells the life story of Li Ka-Shing. But it is not an official biography endorsed and published by Mr. Li himself.

In 2007, he studied for a Ph.D. in Management from Southeast University. But it is not known whether the person is the author of Li Ka-Shing's Biography.

Li Ka-Shing was born in 1928 in Chao'an County, Chaozhou, Guangdong Province. He attended Guanhai Temple Primary School on North Gate Street. In1940, Li Ka-Shing, and his family moved to Hong Kong. In 1958, he began to invest in real estate. In 1979, he became the first Chinese to buy Hutchison Whampoa, an established British-owned company. Shopping malls such as the battlefield, a brilliant entrepreneur will not be able to do their job. There will be talented people, when the world into the line, the world should float and sink the sea of commerce.

Li Ka-Shing's life ups and downs, in many key life ken places repeatedly turned dangerous or seize the opportunity;

According to Li Ka-Shing himself, what he did was not a speculative business, but a long business, so he paid great attention to credibility and honesty, as a way of doing business.

The Chaotic area is a well-known hometown of overseas Chinese in China, with a population of about 10 million, while the number of overseas arrivals is about 67 million, and the number of people who have moved to Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan is more than 10 million. ."

Guangdong has played a special role in the recent history of China. It may be because Guangdong has some of the earliest open trade ports, it may also be because geographical and cultural factors are relatively unconscionable by the government, or it may be that people have a difficult life and a strong desire to become rich in business. In short, today we look back at the 20th century, the 100 years, we found that the people of Guangdong in foreign exchanges dare to fight. More active, more open-minded, and more acceptable to foreign things than the relatively conservative mainland residents.

Chaotao is the political, economic, and cultural center of eastern Guangdong, and the mass emigration of the Tidal people began in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Tide overseas trade developed, "businessmen to benefit from the light and leave", "relocation" consciousness is weak. The migration of the boomers cannot be attributed solely to poverty. Actively explore, is the unique landscape of Chaotou culture. The migration of the boomers is also different from the Shandong people breaking through Guandong, Ningbo people breaking into Shanghai, people's footprints are still at home, while the boomers are looking overseas. ."

Li Ka-Shing's cousin Li Jiazhi recalls: "Ka-Shing was like a bookworm, see the book will be fascinated, born to read the material." We were all surprised when he went to Hong Kong and became rich in business. The ancient Chinese system made the readers despise the merchants extremely. Had it not been for being forced to open the country's doors, and after more than a century of ideological change, it is likely that today businessmen still have little social status.

In the winter of 1940, Li Ka-Shing and his brother, Li Ka-Zhao, and sister, Li Su-so, embarked on a difficult journey with their parents. Most of the towns and boulevards were blocked by the Japanese occupation, the sea was closed, and Japanese warships stormed the waters off the eastern coast of Guangdong. Li Yun travels through a rugged mountain path and the plains at night. Cold winter months, cold and humid, rainy. They dare not and have no money to stay in inns, or sleep in the wilderness, or to stay in huts of well-being people in mountain villages.

They crossed a Japanese blockade, and fortunately, they did not encounter Japanese soldiers once. Mountain road, from time to time encounter uprooted refugees, they come or go, where can live in peace? all feeling bewildered and desperate. Li Yun through the family after a lot of hardships trekked the mountains for more than ten days, finally came to the destination of Hong Kong. ."

Li Ka-Shing's uncle, Zhuang Jingxuan, is a veteran of Hong Kong's watch industry. Today's writings on the Hong Kong watch industry make no mention of the Chuang family's Central South Watch Co., Ltd. Zhuang Jingxuan as a child in Chaozhou countryside to read private school, after primary schools, like a large number of boomers out of the home. He first worked as an apprentice at Silver Number in Guangzhou and gradually became a manager. After the independent operation of the wholesale business. In 1935, at the age of 27, Zhuang Jingxuan came to Hong Kong to break into the world. At that time, Hong Kong did not have a watch industry, watches are Switzerland and other countries of Western products, dealers are mostly foreign businessmen.

Zhuang Jingxuan dabbled in the watch industry, starting with the simplest products. He opened a cottage-style factory in Sheung Wirth, producing cloth and leather straps, which were handed over to Hong Kong nine watchmakers for sale. Zhuang record table belt high quality and low price, by agents and consumers welcome, the scale of production is expanding, products are also sold Chinese mainland. In the early 1940s, Zhuang Jingxuan was part of the watch trade. Buy Swiss watches and sell them to Southeast Asian countries. In the 1950s, Zhuang Jingxuan officially stepped into the watch industry and became the largest watchmaker in Hong Kong. ."

Business dilutes family atmosphere and relationships. Li Ka-Shing slightly older, Zhuang Jingxuan said with deep feeling: "Hong Kong shopping malls, fierce competition, dare not relax half a point, if not, even if the family wealth, will lose a poor." ".

Ordinary people see the business Jia huge wealth, will envy them to throw a thousand gold. But if these people are allowed to live in different places, can they put up with the constant pressure that businessmen are under and keep their businesses going?

Li Ka-Shing looked back, as described in his childhood mentality: "When I was a child, my family was not rich, but life was stable." My father, uncle, and uncle were highly educated and respected readers. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, I came to Hong Kong with my father, and all I could see was that the world was cold and warm, and I felt that the world was like this. So in my heart a lot of feelings, in this way, childhood colorful dreams and naivety have completely disappeared. ".

" The Chinese in Hong Kong are popular in Guangzhou, Guangzhou and Chaoyu are different languages, in Hong Kong, do not understand Guangzhou language is difficult to walk. Li Ka-Shing to learn Guangzhou as a big deal, he worships his cousin as a teacher, hard work. At a young age, he soon learned to speak Guangzhouese fluently. The difficulty is the English pass. Li Ka-Shing went to secondary school in Hong Kong. The majority of secondary schools in Hong Kong are English secondary schools, and Chinese teaching materials account for more than half of all secondary schools. This is the result of the colonial education promoted by the British and Hong Kong Governments.

Objectively speaking, it will help to improve the quality of Hong Kong people's business culture. The reason why Hong Kong has become an international metropolis is intoned with the overall level of English available to the people of Hong Kong. Understand English, can more directly accept the Western culture, engaged in international economic and cultural exchanges. ."

Zhuang Jingxuan did not bear to let his nephew at a young age, on his own to make a living, he originally intended to let Li Ka-Shing into his company. But he worries that Ka-Shing is too easy to find a job and doesn't think about self-help. Therefore, let Li Ka-Shing taste the pain of finding a job, to cherish the hard-won occupation. ."

No one is looking for sin. But for young people, there are more setbacks before the age of 30, and I think the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Idealism is inevitable when you are young. Only by touching more walls can we gradually figure out how the world works. A little earlier to the pointless face and Qing Gao abandoned, to put down a little earlier, down-to-earth to do things. Then after the age of 30, when the face gradually becomes important, there is no need to repeatedly hit the wall. What face do young people want, the face is worthless to young people. Decent things like this,30years old, and then say it.

"The teahouse is a small society, three teaching nine streams, what kind of people have. They are far from what their father said about the ancient sages, but one by one they are so real and full of distinct personalities. They are ly poor, or rich; Perhaps because of being in the pile of books for too long, Li Ka-shing has a special sense of freshness about the people and things in the teahouse. He would speculate on the origin, occupation, wealth, and character of a tea guest. As a result, he developed the habit of observing people, which would be of great benefit to his future sales work. ."

Afterward, the boss said to Li Ka-shing, "I know you put water on the guest's pants." Be careful what you do later. In case there is any mistake, to quickly pay tribute to the guests, can not say can be a big deal. The guest is kind-hearted, and if it's evil, I don't know what it's going to be like. It's hard for the boss guys to open a teahouse. ".

Into the South Central Company, the evening time is all their own, daytime work is not so tiring. Li Ka-shing has set himself a new goal of using his spare time to complete his secondary school curriculum. He was young and humble, but in his bones there was an unyielding pride, eager to make a name for himself, like an uncle, like the teahouse encountered by the "big granules" (big boss), to do a big cause.

Although in wartime, the power of science and technology is everywhere, China was invaded by Japan, Japan in the Pacific battlefield finally lost in the hands of the United States, all have a certain connection with science and technology. Entering the era of peace, the role of science and technology will become more and more important, changing with the times. Without knowledge, it is difficult to make a big cause, which is a very simple truth. ."

For students, the same classes are offered during the day. For employees, the same job is done during the day. If you do the same thing as others, the gap between people won't be too great. Making a difference has a lot to do with how they spend their nights. After the tiredness of the day, want to relax at night, look at the video, playing games is human. But if you can spend these hours day after day, year after year, in your studies. Well, after 10 years, there's a good chance that this person will stand out from his peers.

In early 1946, at the age of 17, Li Ka-shing suddenly left the high-momentum Central South Company and went to a small, little-edged gold factory to work as a street salesman. Li Ka-shing, who has a calm personality, is a restless person. He went to the mill to work as a salesman, but when the situation opened, he jumped ship to the plastics company. He quickly became the company's outstanding salesman, 18 years old as a department manager, 20 years old to become general manager, won the boss's weight. When he was in high spring, he suddenly had to change jobs again. ."

Street sales are different from waiting for guests in a teahouse and selling watches in a shop. The latter customers already have the intention to buy, and street sales, initially only one party's intention. Does the other party have any intention of buying? Do you need your product? How do you find customers and contact them? What should you say and what should you wear when you meet with the customer for the first time?

The customer has no intention of cooperation, how do you stimulate his intention? How do you strengthen a customer who has established a purchase-sale relationship? True sales art, can not be learned in the university classroom, no books can be found. The art of marketing, in the marketing itself, can only be in the marketing to grasp and understand. ."

Since Li Ka-shing joined the gold factory, the business of the gold factory is booming, to promote production, production and marketing are entering a good situation. The boss couldn't help but call Acheng the first hero in front of the employees. However, Li Ka-shing, who is heavily regarded by his boss, has just opened the situation and will have to jump ship and abandon him. The boss was so anxious that he offered Li Ka-shing a promotion and a raise, and he still didn't change his mind. ."

Some people can do a good job no matter where they are. Some people are amazing when they are not fit for his position, but when they get to the right position for him. The visible success of this matter is one person one way. You can learn other people's ideas, it is not appropriate to copy other people's methods directly. If Jack Welch were to be placed in Li Ka-shing's position, he might not be able to do so to the same extent as Li Ka-shing, and vice versa. The external environment also has a great impact, and the same practice can vary greatly from the environment to the environment.

Picked this up in a second hand bookstore in 2025.

Not exactly a biography but more so provides commentary behind Li Ka Shing’s family background, history of Hong Kong, the beginnings of his business venture in Hong Kong to its expansion overseas in Canada (at the time). Provides some insight on Li Ka Shing’s professional relationships from banking ties to links with elements of the Chinese government. I liked that it referred to the “Hongs” such as Swire and Jardine Mathesons that were so influential in early Hong Kong.

Book doesn’t dive in much depth to any interviews from Li Ka Shing, mostly led by background info. Was surprised that the book didn’t talk at all about the kidnapping of his eldest son and it’s impact on him and his family.

Would’ve appreciated knowing more about him as a person, his views, and the major experiences that shaped him (which is only touched upon). But again, the book is old..

It is not a surprise that such a successful Billionaire like superman Li Ka Shin was not made by an educational system but by self-learning. Not to disregard educational systems but one must not stop there and keep learning, it’s not about the best educational system but it’s about how you use the knowledge and to learn what you like. This book gives a lot of insights of when one will reach the billionaire lifestyle. If you are not there yet then simply best to be read once you reach that level or to take an idea of what one would be involving once reached that state. One point I would have done differently in his life is that, he never retired, never really enjoyed life for a couple years rather then he always loved what he did. Sometimes life is more important than money and one must understand to achieve balance before it’s too late. If you are into investments this book is for you.

Interesting take on the life of Li Ka-shing and how his wealth was built alongside the chaotic historical backdrop of Hong Kong.
I wish there were more details of Li's early business ventures and his decision-making on important decisions. Some places feel like a Wikipedia listing people's names, so it's a bit dry.
