William Cortvriendt (1956) is arts met een uitgebreide ervaring in onderzoek. Hij heeft onder meer functies vervuld als medisch directeur en vice president bij drie verschillende medische bedrijven en heeft gewerkt als consultant bij McKinsey & Company. Zijn boek 'Hoe word je 100?' is eerder uitgebracht in de VS met de titel 'Living a Century or More' en is aldaar een bestseller.

Het boek ligt op de lijn van de voedselzandloper.
Iets toegankelijker vind ik persoonlijk.
En sommige boodschappen moeten herhaald worden, voor dat ze tot je doordringen.

De voedselrichtlijnen liggen in het verlengde van het diabetesfonds / MLD stiching, en staan dus haaks op die van het Voedingscentrum.

Opvallend weetje:
Niet alleen het diabetus II proces, maar ook het hart & vaatziekte proces kan je OMKEREN door anders te gaan eten. In deze gevallen kan een mens zich zelf blijkbaar gezond eten.

Om gezond oud te worden adviseert het boek EN je eetgewoontes in de gaten te houden EN te bewegen. Voor wie wil afvallen: dat is blijkbaar alleen door het aanpassen van je eetpatroon te realiseren volgens dit boek. Maar dan niet door het tellen van calorieen...

Aanrader wat mij betreft.

This book astonished me in many ways. I feel somehow the need to tell everyone to read "Living a Century or More", as it can change their life. Maybe because I have people I care about who are suffering from many of the health related issues covered and following these simple lifestyle changes could add healthy years to their life. It is very frustrating to me that we go to the doctor and they never take the time to discuss what is really healthy, what is unhealthy. Take cholesterol for example, until now I never really understood what it meant, and that we often avoid foods that we can eat. I would rather follow these simple dietary changes then take statins for the rest of my life.
Did you know that taking some multi vitamins can be detrimental to your health? Many myths are unbuckled in this book such as food supplements and much more.
Dr. Cortvriendt believes in preventive care and not just addressing sick care.
The book starts off talking about the authors parents and why they are still active and healthy in their mid nineties and then goes on to what it is that all these people who reach such a ripe age and what it is that they are doing right.
The difference between this book and others is that it is very informative on many different topics which most books on health seem to sell one topic. I did not know before that the risk of some types of dementia can be prevented or that a daily piece of dark chocolate could be so beneficial. Fasting diets do not work, which I have seen in others but it is explained why they do not work and resulting in a yo-yo effect.
Have you heard so many people who are overweight explain that they don't eat much but they start to shake after a certain time and have to eat again? Well it is thoroughly explained with graph and all at why that is and what they have to do to change that!
I think this book is a very important read which should be recommended to health care providers, politicians, educators and anyone who wants to live a healthy life.

Well researched and written. Scientifically describes the processes of aging and those factors which contribute to accelerated aging in a very clear and easy to understand language. I feel the author maintained that delicate balance of providing scientific information but at the same time kept their readers engaged...job well done!

Interessant. Veel tips. Soms wat taai om doorheen te komen en hier en daar wat herhalingen.. Maar over het algemeen goed om te lezen.. en vervolgens toe te passen in het dagelijks leven.

This is a very good book and I hope lots of folks read it. I stumbled across it due to the author's connection with an old schoolmate of mine from junior high school of all times. Turned out to be a very helpful coincidence though. The chapters in this book cover all the major aspects of health, from why we age to diet to exercise to the effects of other lifestyle decisions. The contents of the chapters are well-researched and well-documented. The author comes across as sincerely interested in wanting to help you make the right decisions about how to live, to live a century or more. There were no pitches for programs or products, just info on the current state of science regarding aging and health.

I did not expect this when I started reading it, but the author's enthusiasm regarding our ability to make things better, coupled with the evidence-based science and over-all readability of the book ended up having a motivational effect on me. The book was like a tonic, and I like that in a book!
