Is she missing…or a murderer?

When Laura Chaucer, daughter of a U.S. senator, vanishes from her college campus, celebrated FBI profilers Special Agent Atticus Spenser and forensic psychiatrist Dr. Caitlin Cassidy are called in. Thirteen years ago, Laura and her nanny disappeared from her family’s Denver home. Laura was found alive, but her nanny wasn’t so lucky… and the killer was never caught. Laura could identify him—if only she didn’t have a deep, dark hole in her memory.

Now she’s missing again. Did the troubled young woman run away or has the kidnapper returned? As women who look eerily similar to Laura’s nanny begin turning up dead, the Chaucer family psychiatrist renders a disturbing opinion: Laura is unstable, a danger to herself and others. Who knows what terrible secrets lurk in the shadowy recesses of her mind? Cassidy and Spenser must solve one of the most infamous cold cases ever to uncover the answer: Is Laura a killer, or is a monster still out there, waiting to claim another victim?

Another excellent book!

I just love both Caity and Spense! Their quirks are so great! Caity's levelheadedness in all situations is just the right thing for a psychiatrist and Spense's ways to cope with his ATT is fantastic!

Here the case they have to solve is really, really creepy!

Where is Laura? Is she a killer or not? Did she run away or has she been kidnapped as when she was a child? Is she crazy or not?

Those are only a few questions they have to find answers to!

And what an answer it was at the end! WOW! I really didn't expected it at all!

We're led on during the whole book. I was suspecting the obvious, but it was not at all what happened! Even if the obvious was evil too!

Yes, I'm intentionally vague about everything, but I don't want to spoil the fun!

I am engrossed from the opening page of Stolen by Carey Baldwin and read this edge of the seat suspense in one sitting.

The hot and sexy investigative team of Cassidy and Spencer heat up the pages as they descend on Denver in search of a monster. The duo may sound a bit familiar? Are they a combination of some that we know and love?

Laura is missing. It is the second time in thirteen years, and some question whether she is the victim or the perpetrator arises.

The psychological terror Laura is under keeps her confused and unsure, doubting her own innocence and what is real. No one around here is helping her and she doesn’t know who she can trust.

With all she has been through, Carey Baldwin has created a strong character, filled with doubt yet determined to find the truth and stop the monster.

I silently urged her to reach out to Caity and Spense. Spense is with the BAU and Caity works along side him as a consultant, but I like the direction Carey Baldwin took.

There are times when I question the direction Carey Baldwin took, but who’s to say what any of us would do if we walked in Laura’s shoes and it keeps the story going in the direction Carey she has chosen. After all, Laura is not a cop, a psychologist or a profiler.

Very quickly, I had my first suspect. His attitude and conduct is sickening and he really pissed me off. He makes a fantastic villain.

That shopping scene is super CREEPY.

Then comes suspect #2 and #3.

There are plenty of twists and turns and Carey Baldwin’s use of misdirection kept me doubting my choice of the serial killer.

Two thumbs up for this fast paced, nail biting suspense and the cast of characters that had me loving them and hating them…you know who you are…

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of Stolen by Carey Baldwin

When a daughter of a Senator goes missing, Psychiatrist Cassidy and FBI BAU member Spenser are called to help. Laura Chaucer went out with friends and never returned. This case is special though as not only is she a high-profile and her father is a Senator. This is the second time she has disappeared, and thirteen years ago when she last disappeared with her nanny, only Laura returned home alive. As the days pass, though Cassidy and Spenser will discover a pattern and a dark one at that which will lead to many other cold cases being solved as they uncover a decade plus murderer. Why is Laura at the center of it and is she being used as a patsy? Stolen was quite a complex murder mystery and took lots of twists and turns and focused more on the profiling side of the case rather than the murder and mystery gruesome part of serial killer books which made it a slower read than I am normally used to. If you are looking for a new author to discover, then check out Stolen by Casey Baldwin - Book #4 in the Cassidy and Spenser series, but can be read as a stand-alone book.

Atticus Spenser and Dr. Caitlin Cassidy, a highly successful FBI profiler/civilian psychiatrist team, were sent to find and (hopefully) rescue the 21-year-old daughter of Senator Whitmore Chaucer. The sad thing, and the frightening thing, was this wasn’t the first time Laura Chaucer had gone missing. She’d also disappeared when she was eight years old. Was this second disappearance related to the first? Did she simply run away from her overprotective parent’s home? Or could it be something else entirely?

This engrossing mystery/thriller by Carey Baldwin was unlike any other I’ve read. The characters were obviously well thought out. The plot was complex, and very twisted. There were surprises galore, some that were so unanticipated, they made me jump in my seat as I read the tale.

The writing was clear, concise, and kept the reader interested throughout. I simply had to complete this book once I began it. I wanted all the loose ends explained, and the offender appropriately punished. I had to find out “whodunit” before I could close my eyes for the night. It’s great to find a book that grips you and drags you pell-mell until the bitter end.

The author described scenes in a manner that placed me squarely in the story, able to see, hear, feel, and sometimes even taste, everything. Those scenes were exquisite in their pins-and-needles atmospheric pace-setting.

For those who enjoy romantic suspense, there was even a bit of ongoing romance between Spenser and Cassidy, though thankfully not enough to detract from the glorious mystery unspooling as the pages were turned.

Spenser and Cassidy are recurring characters in a mystery series by this author, so I’ll be watching for the next installment (in addition to reading the three earlier stories in the series I’ve missed). This is a series to follow.

Stolen is immensely enjoyable. I rate this book a 4 ½ out of 5.

Stolen is book four in the Cassidy & Spenser series by Carey Baldwin. Dr Caitlin Cassidy and FBI Special Agent Atticus Spenser were going to have a break in Tahiti. However, the President of the United States requested them to help in the investigation of the disappearance of Laura Chaucer for the second time in Denver, and it would be an excellent opportunity for their mother's to meet. The readers of Stolen will go on a rollercoaster ride with Dr Caitlin Cassidy and FBI Special Agent Atticus Spenser to find the truth about the disappearances of Laura Chaucer.

I enjoyed reading Stolen. From the first book Notorious I loved the way, Carey Baldwin portrayed her main characters Caitlin Cassidy and Atticus Spenser and the way they entwine with each other. I like Carey Baldwin description of her setting and her plots that engages me from the first page. Carey Baldwin, I did a great job to ensure that I did not expect the ending of Stolen until the last page.

The readers of Stolen will learn what drugs can do to young person mind, and it is a form of child endangerment. Also, the readers of Stolen will determine the consequences if law enforcement makes a mistake during an investigation.

I recommend this book.

Top notch romantic suspense! Keeps you guessing big time—and reading—way past bedtime! Fast-paced, solid plot, well-drawn characters (even the hateful ones!), and great writing, too! Highly recommend! As for me, I'll be reading the rest of this series a.s.a.p! In this one, the Caity & Spence are already together (not that they don't have some relationship growing pains), but I'm looking forward to seeing them get together in earlier books.

In Carey Baldwin’s STOLEN, she creates a fast moving mystery thriller that focuses on family issues, murder, kidnapping, mental illness, and romance. In addition to the continuing development of her two protagonists, a forensic psychiatrist, Dr. Catlin Cassidy and FBI profiler Special Agent Atticus Spencer’s romantic relationship, she creates a storyline full of mystery and intrigue from the very first page to the heart-breaking ending. Baldwin adds Cassidy and Spencer’s backstory including details of a past case affecting his family. They fly to Denver in search of finding a US Senator’s daughter, Laura Chaucer, who is missing.

The author creates interesting support characters giving details of their roles in the storyline as she proceeds to introduce them to readers. Baldwin adds several subplots changing the direction and momentum of the storyline. Cassidy and Spencer’s investigation reveals antagonists who have very evil agendas. Danger seems to follow both of them throughout the entire story. The author places readers on Cassidy’s shoulder as she investigates Laura’s past that gives insight to Cassidy’s medical opinions of Laura’s psyche. Cassidy finds Laura’s past adds an interesting dynamic to Laura’s relationships with her family, doctors, and friends.

The storyline takes Cassidy and Spencer’s investigation in several directions keeping readers guessing as to what is happening. Baldwin builds suspense and intrigue taking the plot of STOLEN toward an ending full twists and turns and surprises. She keeps her readers on pins and needles as she reveals the identity of those guilty of manipulation and murder. STOLEN’S ending delivers an ending uncovering unpredictable evil monsters.

While this is the fourth book in the Cassidy and Spenser series, it reads very well on its own. Plenty of back story is included in this book as the plot develops so readers new to the series won't have a problem enjoying this book.

This novel is a great psychological thriller. We experience the terror right along with Laura as she struggles with her memories. She is unsure if she has killed someone or not. Even her psychiatrist thinks she might be capable of causing danger to others. When she manages to escape from her kidnapper, she does not know who she can trust nor how she will find out the truth.

Cassidy and Spenser are flawed characters. Spenser has an explosive anger he has difficulty keeping under control, getting him in trouble with a potential suspect. Cassidy, to my surprise, made some very unwise decisions that brought her into potentially suspenseful situations. As a psychiatrist, she seemed particularly naive when it came to a potentially harmful suspect.

Other than the minor character defects in Cassidy and Spenser, this is a great novel of intense suspense. There are several red herrings and a great twist that kept me guessing who the villain was. I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy an intense psychological thriller.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book through Partners in Crime Virtual Book Tours. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Summary from Goodreads:

My Thoughts:

I am loving this series so much!! I'm only two books in and it has already become a fast favorite of mine. One of the reasons that I'm enjoying these books so much is because they are such page turners. With both books that I've read, I'm just been able to sink into the mystery from the very first page. These are books that I couldn't put down- and wouldn't want to even if I could. LOL! But seriously, I knew as soon as I read that description that I wanted to read this book. The idea of Laura having holes in her memory on what happened to her so long ago combined with the possibility that she is dangerous herself was something that I just couldn't resist. I'm such a sucker for books where you can't trust one of the characters. It is one of those things that will make me want to read a book instantly. I loved how the author used what happened so long ago and tied it into the present. The mystery had me guessing from the very beginning which is always a good thing. The best part though was even though I spent the majority of the book thinking that I had the killer figured out....I was completely wrong. I've got to say how much I love when that happens.

One of the other things that I really love about these books is the main characters of Caitlin Cassidy and Atticus Spenser. I love that with each book (at least the ones that I've read) we get to see their relationship grow and develop. They are a really great team and it is fun "watching" them work. With each book I find that I'm more and more invested in their characters and their relationship. I want to see everything work out the way that I want it too. I like that the author isn't afraid to put their relationship to the test at times even if it makes me nervous while reading. The ending of this book was really intense which is just the way I like it. I found myself reading this book in a matter of days because I just didn't want to stop. I loved the way that the story was set up from Laura's point of view at times and other times it was focused on Cassidy and Spencer's investigation. It worked out really well and this seemed to add to the tension that was present throughout the book.

Overall this was a really great read and I'm eager for more! I really, really need to go back and read the first two books in this series since I've loved books three and four so much. At least I have those two books to look forward to while I wait for the next book in this series to release. This author and this series has definitely jumped on to my favorites list so I can't recommend them enough! You obviously don't have to read the books in order because I sure haven't and I still love them. I do think that parts from previous investigations and books are referred to at times but since I haven't read them yet it doesn't really affect my enjoyment. I would recommend these books to both mystery and thriller fans alike. Highly, highly recommended!

Bottom Line: A great addition to one of my favorite mystery series!

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book thanks to the publisher as part of a PICT book tour.

Intriguing story line

Pretty good read. This one has some twists and turns but it wasn’t hard to figure out the culprit. Laura is a mentally disturbed girl who was abducted at a young age but was released unharmed while her nanny was murdered. Laura has endured years of psycho therapy and medications that both clear her mind as well as utterly confuse her. Laura finally gains enough confidence that she heads off to college despite her powerful Senator father’s disapproval. Laura wakes up in the cabin she was held captive in as a child, delusional with drugs, covered in blood, and being cut by the person she calls “the monster.” When FBI agent Spencer and psychiatrist Cait get involved with local law enforcement to solve the case of the missing Laura for the second time, things get interesting. While not the most exciting or interesting book I’ve read, I do recommend it for good story line and satisfactory conclusion. Thankfully, it wasn’t littered with profanity, sex, or graphic violence throughout. It’s nice to read a story without being constantly bombarded with the obscene. Kudos to the author for that. Try it.

Stolen takes FBI profiler Special Agent Atticus Spenser and forensic psychiatrist Dr. Caitlin Cassidy on an investigation to finding out if a killer is a monster that lives within or is one that has been hiding in the shadows.

Laura Chaucer lived through a nightmare when she was 8 years old. Problem is her memory is hazy about the events that lead up to her and her nanny being kidnapped and her nanny being murdered. In the years since, her psychiatrist has had her on medications that only messed with her mind more. Now in college she has taken herself off the medications but in doing so the faint memory she has of the monster from all those years ago has return – but is he just a hallucination and she the monster or is he real and now back for her.

Now that Spence and Caitlin have admitted their feelings for one another and committed to a relationship I think its improved their professional relationship and makes them a formidable team in chasing down serial killers and bringing them to justice. Their quirkiness just makes them all the more lovable as a couple and partners.

The author throws in some red herrings during the investigation to keep us on our toes until the twisted surprise conclusion that shows us monsters are real and are closer than you think.

Cassidy and Spenser get better with each book. This book has Spense dealing with the fallout from their last case. They are asked to go to Denver to assist with finding the missing daughter of a US Senator. Laura has been missing for a few days. She was kidnapped 13 years ago. Her nanny was killed but she was found safe. She's been treated for mental illness for years. The question is whether her disappearance this time is another kidnapping or if she has run away. Her former psychiatrist implies she could be a danger not only to herself but others. The psychiatrist is a former mentor and lover of Caity's. Things did not end well with them. Spenser feels very protective. This book made me love Spense even more. He's so patient. He's willing to give Caity whatever she needs even if it is difficult for him. Spense and his mother have a great conversation that provides relief to him. I suspected who the bad guy was but was not disappointed. The resolution was satisfying. The end between Spense and Caity was wonderful. She has really grown.

Thirteen years ago a girl and her nanny disappear. Laura Chaucer, the daughter of a U.S. SENATOR, is found several days later and the nanny is dead. Certain parts of Laura’s memory are blank. Now she’s living away from her famous family and going to college. Then when she doesn’t come home, they believe she’s either been kidnapped again or she’s more dangerous than anyone believed. Forensic psychiatrist Caitlin Cassidy and FBI profiler Atticus Spenser are called in to help. Women who look similar to Laura’s nanny start turning up dead. Laura’s childhood psychiatrist thinks Laura is dangerous and she’s behind the killings. Cait and Spense must solve a cold case to hopefully solve the current case.
First time reading this author. This is the fourth in this series but you don’t necessarily have to read the others first. Suspense. I was hooked from the beginning. Point of views from several different perspectives. No steam. A little romantic.

Simplistic Writing And Storyline

The authors has a very simplistic writing style - too simplistic for my taste. I felt like I was reading a book by a new, inexperienced author. The storyline was far-fetched. The two FBI agents (who were together by the way), were not believable at all. They would "forget" about a press conference, or jump at a simple noise. Again, completely unrealistic for FBI agents. If you enjoy a plausible storyline and strong writing, you will probably not enjoy this book.

Carey Baldwin has created a story filled with lots of twists and doubts on the part of the reader. Just when I thought I had this whole thing figured out, Baldwin throws in another twist and casts doubt again. The side romance between Spence and Caity is fun and entertaining. Throughout the book there are enough "bad guys" to go around, but you'll never suspect the real bad guy! I only gave it four stars because, well, no one's luck can be THAT good.

Enjoyable

Another enjoyable story though I would have rated higher if it wasn't for chapters 39 and 50. No way Spenser would have stayed after the way he "defended" Caity's honor earlier. The last chapter was just foolish and anticlimactic rubbish. As for the rest of the book, plot kept me interested enough to finish. It was easy to narrow down the villain early between two of the characters.

Excellent read! The storyline kept me fully engaged right up to the end. There were several characters who could easily have been the killer, so the reader can't be certain until the end.

There was a lot of technical psychological information, but not so much as to confuse or irritate. Good writing skills keep the reader turning pages.

A mystery that points you in so many directions you won't know who the killer is until the end

First, I want to say I love this series. Each one has its own mystery and you won't be disappointed reading any of them. I love guessing who the killer is until the end. I also like the love story that unfolds add the series continues.

Delightful

I was thoroughly pleased to find the conclusion of the case took place towards the very end of the novel! I was interested and on the edge of the seat the entire time! The bad guy was pretty obvious, but I still loved every second of it!
Definitely recommend this entire series

Great read. Suspenseful to the very last page. Cassidy and Spenser are terrific on and off the job. I found myself hoping Laura, the victim/possible murderer would be able to solve the missing time in her memories to arrive at the truth.

It was a fairly good story. I did not like the fact that everything Laura needed to get out of the cabin safely just conveniently happened to be there and she just happened to have a lot of money in her purse. It felt like a shortcut.
