Small town America comes to life in this short coastal cozy ‘coffee break book’ thanks to the relationships between characters and the unforgettable, quirky village personalities. It is an enjoyable witty read offering seaside suspense, a rocky murder, and a blossoming romance.
Angie is a fairly new transplant from New York to this small coastal town of Boddington Bay, somewhere near Boston. She is the proud new owner of The Kitchen Sink .. thanks to the inheritance she received when her grandmother passed away. The only other promise she had to make was to hire her cousin, Lisa, to work for her.
She's actually quite happy in Boddington Bay, she's making friends, but she also has a secret that only 2 or 3 other people know.
But today, her life became much more complicated. She finds a dead body that's been thrown (or did he fall) onto the rocks.
Her friend, Larry Brownlow, is a retired detective and the two of them are not convinced this was an accident or suicide. Receiving permission from the lead investigator to make inquiries on their own, what they look into turns into something totally different.
I enjoyed the unconventional characters and their relationships. Makes me wish I lived in a small town. There is suspense that keeps the reader guessing. A possible love interest?
The only con I have is that the police allowing two private citizens to investigate a murder is not anywhere near realistic. I had to keep reminding myself ... fiction .. fiction ... fiction.
Otherwise, this was a fast, easy read (less than 50 pages) ... and enjoyable.
This short book didn't work for me. I thought there was no explanation of why the heroine wanted to become involved in the investigation. A slip in the timeline, with a day getting lost Her cat as a narrator? A complete miss-representation of how a law enforcement agency would deal with 'innocents' on the edge of an operation - false imprisonment ? Shame that silly mistakes have wasted a nice idea, good use of language but ....
Angela Augustine inherits a bakery with a huge caveat. One caveat is to relocate from NYC to Boddington Bay; a small village outside of Boston. Second caveat was a huge bullet to swallow, offer her chronically unemployable cousin Lisa a job.
When a painter type handyman was murdered at the local lighthouse, Angela and her friend Larry Brownlow begin to work on who the murderer is. The local law enforcement; Chief Zak Flynn, doesn’t seem too motivated to find the murderer.
Can Angela and Larry succeed? Will Angela survive her cousin Lisa?
No surprises/mystery. No real plot. No suspense. Confusing: You're not sure, from one paragraph to the other, where you are in the story; for example, one paragraph you're at the docks, the next you're in a house at breakfast two days later. Really short story. Characters not developed. It was actually a boring story.
Just finished this short story/murder mystery and am very unimpressed. I won' t be se!ecting anything further from this author as the plot unfolded way too fast and was really not to my taste. Unfortunately the story ended before I could even decide if I like the characters or not!
If you like a short story and a fast paced cop story, this is the one for you. Murder and stakeouts was on the menu. I did love the little bit of the dog and cat activities in this series. It adds to the fun. Not too complicated a story line and a very quick read would describe this offering well.
A short story. Interesting use of the viewpoint of the cat, which I thought was a bit jarring during the read. Perhaps it was introduced too late, and/or not used often enough to be really effective.
A great story and characters. Entertaining and clean, love (The Oliva), and (Fudge). I can see a whole series with the same fantastic four in the little town of Bodding Bay.
short, cute and quick! I really enjoyed it and would have loved it to be longer. I've just downloaded number 2 in the series so that I can continue on with the future adventures!
This was a quick read. I do think that the plot and characters could have been more developed. I do realize that this is meant to be a short story, however, it was not all that engaging.
The characters and settings are well written. Even with all subplots, the villain was easy to figure out. The rest of the story will keep you interested.
There were quotes from a random cat for a few lines and that threw me off a little. I believe a much younger audience may enjoy this book more than I did. Quick read!
More like a short story than a novel, Murder on the Rocks is a fun, light-hearted read. I recommend it if you are not looking for an intense, factual murder mystery.
I received a free copy of this book from Amazon. It was not long enough. The plot unfolded to fast. Likeable characters but needed more time to develop them. I will try the next book this author writes.
