Separated from her plush surroundings, Gwyneth learns she’s capable of so much—including love for a man with neither title nor fortune. But she begins to suspect there is more to her rugged, handsome guardian than he’s chosen to reveal. After finding herself at the center of a sinister deception, can she dare to trust her heart to a man who’s spent years deceiving himself?
Michelle is a sucker for hopelessly romantic stories -- the swish of heavy skirts, guys in linen shirts, and moody weather is her happy place.
She lives with her husband and two sons in Nova Scotia, Canada where moody weather and bagpipes are plentiful, but alas, guys in puffy shirts are too few.
Once again, just as she did in Not Your Average Beauty, Michelle Helliwell has done an excellent job of breathing new life into an age old fairy tale story I have known and loved.
She makes all the twists and turn experienced by her characters entirely believable.
Oh how the twists and turns in this story will leave you on the edge of your seat - I promise.
The love story is charming - pardon the pun.
A thoroughly engaging novel. An enchanting read. If the measure of a great story is for the reader to wish for more, Michelle has indeed provided a great read!
The fairy tale references are initially subtle, and later this is more of a retelling than others in the series, but the references are clever and creative. Lady Gwyneth is naive and occasionally annoying, with a bad habit of putting herself in danger and not taking advice, but she does have good character growth. While most characters in the series are wealthy, this one starts the trend of paying attention to the working class.
Loved this second book in the Enchanted Tales series. Having read fairytales when I was young I love to see the similarities come out in historical romances and this is not exception. This is the tale of a maiden, Lady Gwyneth Snowden, who dares to elope with a prince and anticipates her happily ever after. Little does she know that the prince is more like a frog, she is kidnapped. Edmund Pembroke leaves society due to feelings of disappointment to his family. When he is asked to retrieve and protect Gwyneth, he sets out to accomplish that feat. Taking her to a small cottage to keep her safe, Edmund discovers that Gwyneth's life is in danger and he is determined to protect her. Being alone together, the pair find out how strong they can be and if the feelings that begin have any future. You will really story and look forward to the next in the series!!
3.5 stars. The characters are well-developed and compelling, but there was a section where I felt the internal dialogue was very repetitive and could have been cleaned up. Same with some conflicting and confusing action in the middle. I saw what the author was going for, but if I hadn't like the rest of it so well, I might have given a lower rating.
The author writes children very well, and I enjoyed their scenes. Sometimes scenes with children seems forced or take you out of the rest of the story, but these kids blended seamlessly into the story.
I also like how interconnected the stories are. I'm on book 3 now, and looking forward to starting book 4.
I loved 'No Prince Charming', book 2 in Michelle Helliwell's Enchanted Tales series. After reading her other books, I knew to expect a fairy tale theme to be present within the story, but I was even more surprised when little bits of other fairy tales popped up as well. The predominant fairy tale theme being Snow White, with bits of Sleeping Beauty and The Frog Prince also seen. With each reference to a fairy tale bringing great pleasure to the reader. I usually steer clear of historical romances preferring contemporary- but Michelle's series has me rethinking this philosophy.
I absolutely love the premise of taking Fairytales and giving them a new life and I enjoyed this! There were some really great moments when the characters are just having fun and I was happy with the tension between the two MC's. Though it's the 2nd in the series it's the first one I've read and I will be looking to read the others.
As I stated in my review of Enchanted Tales #1, I must admit that I do not read romances, in general. Considering that I do not care for the genre as a whole, I am pleasantly surprised by Helliwell's work. Well written, well researched, and just a lot of fun.
Set in 1795 Cumbria, Helliwell's historical romance draws inspiration from the trope of: Snow White. Twenty-one year old Lady Gwyneth Snowdon is held up and kidnapped by Edmund Pembroke.
It is the story of Lady Gwyneth Snowdon and Edmund Pembroke.
When she dashes off in a daring plan to elope with a prince, a mysterious stranger kidnaps her before she can be married. The prince was handpicked by her mother, and Gwyneth is afraid that her happy ending is doomed.
Edmund was used by his crazy father so he turned his back on polite society. He wants to say good-bye to his past permanently, and makes a deal with his "employer". He is hired to take the countess away from the impostor Prince. When he finds out her life is in danger, he is forced to protect her and confront his ghosts.
Gwyneth is beautiful and well born. She is used to finer things and a more appropriate place to stay. She soon learns she is capable of more than she was taught to be. She starts having feelings for the handsome guardian but doesn't know who to trust. She finds herself at the center of a sinister deception and has to figure out if Edmund is who he appears to reveal himself as.
I enjoyed the writing style of this book and that it is based on the premise of a fairy tale. Will be reading more of this series by this author.
Nice twist on the Snow White fairy tale. It's interesting to see how the author transforms the traditional characters into ones that move the story along. The writing is good; my only quibble (well, not only) is that the text needs a lot of cleanup--one section in the beginning repeats itself for several pages.
