Problem solving means more than getting out of trouble, even though one chapter of the book addresses that limited meaning of “problem.” More broadly, problem solving means getting from a given point to a desired end. Readers should be interested in knowing how to solve problems as usually defined or how to make changes in the world they encounter. Their interest may come either from education in the sciences, management, or other problem-solving field, from a job in such a field, or from life experience in change. One chapter addresses the special conditions when people affect the problem and its solution. There are principles and skills in problem solving that cross disciplines, and readers can learn them.
