Cassy has joined with Frank and his group, and the group members declare themselves a Clan, pitting themselves as a group against the rising tide of darkness around them. Then the death of one of their own creates new tensions that may tear the Clan apart before it ever reaches the promised oasis of Cassy’s homestead farm. Worse, they are followed by a man bent on their destruction, who would take her farm for his own group if he can find it. As the Clan continues its trek, invaders solidify their iron grip over the Eastern Seaboard, opposed by a Resistance aided by a mysterious group known only as “the 20s,” whose identities and ultimate goals remain unknown. Events begin to unfold that will determine the future of Cassy and her new family, and possibly the future of America.
Real people don't talk like this. And the antagonist is a little too over the top in chasing down our female lead. Her group is too worried about swapping partners. But it's a distracting book to listen to while at work. Also the mom does more preaching than I care about.
* sigh * I don't usually review but felt I had to with this series.... I enjoy distopian novels, & have read (listened to) many..these have a balanced amount of surprisingly useful (in an apocalyptic scenario ) information, and the awful things humans can do to each other when society and life expectancy falls. The violence is not too graphic or excessive, which is a welcome relief. What I have HATED about the books, & what drove me to write this, is the sporadic anti-islamic, anti-middle eastern, offensively narrow minded name calling that some of the characters stoop to. Initially I thought it was a method to make the reader dislike a character....but then a 'good' character began. It feels like propaganda....like Team America but it's not ironic nor funny. It feels like these comments are the authors actual attitude towards Afghanistan and it's people.....surely it's bordering on inciting hate? a shame as I was impressed by the knowledge of permaculture farming and sustainable food production. I won't be reading the rest of the series.
I read the second book in this series to see if the authors could bring it up a step. Sadly it was not to be. The writing was a little smoother, but still seemed like book written by committee. In addition there are several new characters introduced which I assume would have a greater role later on in the series. However, some of the plot elements of the story are simply implausible, the idea that every enemy of the US would band together in an attack is inconceivable. In addition the authors have indicated that the US government was at least somewhat aware of the potential attack a few days before it occurred. One wonders where the US Navy was when the east coast and west coast are invaded by China, North Korea, ISIS, and Russia.
When reading I become very immersed in a book if its accurate and good. I only gave 4* because of the wrong snake used. If a author dies not know about something and decides to write about, that can ruin the whole book. The coral snake is not in the area the people were traveling through. Not only that, but they are not aggressive. Yes they are very venomous, but do not strike. The mouth is too small and one has to actually handle these snakes to get bit. Because the author only spent a few lines on this snake bite, it didn't ruin the book. Accuracy counts and so far this is the only thing wrong. I'm off to read book 3, and because this author doesn't call a gun an assault rifle I quite enjoy the books so far.
Way too many holes in these EMP anthologies! In book 2 Peter comes across a wayward sould trapped in his vintage Camro Way too many holes in these EMP anthologies! In book 2, Peter on his way back to his farm, comes across a poor soul trapped in his vintage Camaro being beaten on the windows by starving souls. Guess what? The Camaro runs and after Peter kills most of the attacker's with his .308 and engages the poor guy after he gets out of the car, he informs Peter his car runs. Why didn't he just put it in drive and run his attacker's over? Intstead he offers to drive Peter back to his farm so he can return and attack Cassandra's ranch. Just not believable.

I absolutely loved book 1 of this series and couldn’t wait to get my teeth into this 2nd book but was severely disappointed and really struggled to finish it There seems to be 3 separate plot lines which are entangling in ways that are forced, I think to have them play out in the same book, and the series has moved from the theme of book 1 into pages of military ramblings where nearly every character, despite their background knows how to use military weapons and follow military commands as if they are all active soldiers or veterans. Really ruined this whole series for me. Don’t think I will bother with book 3
The pace picks up dramatically on this book, and the various groups dynamics are coming together. I have a few questions in the back of my mind the whole time but it's not any different than any other EMP story. Where the hell are the hundreds of Naval ships?
This book contains some very wrong and dangerous thinking. God's word and law is eternal. Morals and Truth don't change just because situations do. The theology is all over the place. This book is also crude and lewd at times. But, once again, it contains some interesting food for thought. Thus I didn't give it a zero out of five.
Continuation of this story follows the clan to the farm. More information given on what is going on. I am loving this series and looking forward to reading the next book.
Is dangerous. It seems Americans are fighting each other for food and few are thinking about the invasion. I want to know if we set off some bombs of our own over the enemy.
Great books (series), but I am sick of the megalomaniac rapists and idiots who shoot first and make horrible assumptions which escalate to completely avoidable situations. The sad part is, if this sort of thing happened and we were under attack, I'm sure we'd see this play out in real life.
The storyline is great and so are the characters but the action is often hard to follow. It’s tied in somehow, but it’s so hard to follow there’s no way to tell how.
Cassie and team (or clan as they've taken to call themselves) are back at it again. This time, they are traveling across the perilous countryside trying to get to her homestead outside of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Along the way, they will come across many problems, some external, and some internal.
The narration for EMP Exodus was done by Kevin Pierce. If you are first time reader of my blog and read this review for the first time you don't know how much I enjoy Pierce's voice, especially for Prepper-type books. He really has the perfect voice for the type of person that I imagine is a prepper. Pierce's voice allows for this story to just flow off of the page and into your ears.
EMP Exodus was enjoyable but finished just when the story started getting good! Don't get me wrong, the story was still good, but being a series book -- it just ended when things were really getting interesting. Like I genuinely thought I had at least another hour left in the book when I hear "this concludes EMP Exodus.." I was shocked!
The book has a lot of internal struggle in it. Both within the group and within certain members of the clan. I found that to be really interesting and I found myself really invested in these characters. I know that some of them were from the first book, but it was nice to get an even deeper dive into their views. You don't normally get that in the second book in a series.
If all three are available (as long as the third finishes the series), I would definitely try to line them up and listen to them in order. The stories really play off of each other and this one picks up right where the first book left off. And I know that the third book will do the same.
Overall, a really enjoyable prepper book filled with internal struggles and a lot of prepper knowledge and instinct narrated by the wonderful Kevin Pierce.
I was given a copy of this audiobook in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion.
An outstanding continuation of book 1. This series is quickly becoming one of my all-time favorites. It's written in an unusual way, but that never gets in the way of the story. In fact, I can't think of any books that do such seamless POV shifts, other than perhaps the Liaden series. And the changes in POV are never jarring, never pointless - you see the story almost like a movie in the mind, and the different POVs give the story a great sense of movement. I love (love!) the characters, and watching them grow from book 1 has been half the fun. This is unlike any other "prepper" fiction I've read - like book 1, it's more post-apocalypse or dystopian than prepper. But the author clearly knows what he's talking about, with lots of little easter eggs of prepping wisdom scattered throughout, without ever becoming a lecture or monologue.
I love the way this author writes. His craft is engaging, complex, and filled with the build up of tension in all the right places throughout the story. The characters he has created are well defined and unique in their individuality. This gives the reader the ability to fully understand the complexity of each. As a writer, this is a rare ability and rare to find in this degree. His writing pulls the reader into the story until suddenly they find that they actually feel as though they are witnessing in real life, They drama of the prose. Great read and one I truly believe, having no doubt, you too will enjoy. Don't forget to help out the authors of the books you read by leaving honest feedback.
This is the second book of the Dark New World series. The story picks up from where it left off in the first book and finds the group, now calling themselves a clan, making their way to Cassy's homestead.
Needless to say there are many twists and turns as the clan struggles to complete their journey. In this second book we gain some insight into the forces leading the invasion and the power struggles they themselves are caught up in.
I'm hoping that the third book comes soon as ending of this book has me eager to see the story progress.
Who are these invaders that continue to bomb and spray defoliant on crops and surrounding forest? Cassie has united with her family and Frank's group safe within Ethan's bunker for the moment. Now that the group is all together, plans must be made to continue to Cassie's homestead, supplies, weapons, and safety. Little do they know that Peter's group still waits above them looking for revenge and what they call justice.
It took a while to get caught up in the story. Three different groups, separate from each other but still connected. America is being invaded yet life within their clan /family/work life goes on with all of the drama.
A different type of apocalypse book. Looking forward to reading more in this series.
This is the second book I read by the author. I thought I was purchasing a specified number of pages but both books ended at 80% of the total. The remainder is a preview of the next book and other stuff. So be aware that you are buying a book that is actually 20% shorter than advertised.
