Cameo: Demon of Misery
Butterfly: on her lower back
Her curse: Misery, depression, tears, emotional pain. Her voise makes people commit suicides. It makes them crazy with sadness. Cameo was never happy.

Lazarus: Immortal warrior. Son of Typhon and Echidna, a Gorgon. King of the Realm of Grimm and Fantica
Supernatural ability: He is the son of the most feared immortal on Earth and a gorgon. Gorgons were a vicious race known for venomous snakes that grew from their scalps and an ability to turn anyone into stone with a simple meeting of eyes. Lazarus has a lot of things to inherit and to use. And it is not easy to kill him – although he is already beheaded and dead (eh, what???)

Like Alice on her way to Wonderland, Cameo, host to the demon of Misery, tumbled end over end down a long, dark cavern.

Let’s start with the basic, first facts that catch the eye:

1. The sequential number in the series. 13. For some people, it is their lucky number. For others, it brings misfortune and misery. Strong number. It suits Cameo. I have a feeling that Gena Showalter knew from the beginning of the series that book number 13 would be for Cameo.
2. The book cover. Magnificent. I loved it. I loved that Cameo is looking at the readers and dares them to hear her sad story. I loved that Lazarus is only looking at her like nothing else matters.
3. The title. The word ‘promise’ always makes me expect strong feelings. When there is a promise, there is life. There are expectations. There is future. There is togetherness.

Cameo is Lazarus’ μονομανία, i.e.
in medical terms, a sick condition from which a man suffers when he is possessed by an obsessive idea or
in poetic terms the extensive desire for a woman that can bring a man to his knees

Lazarus is a man who loves his power, so he could certainly and easily kill Cameo to free himself.

Instead:
- He burns for her for years and years and she does not have a clue.
- He calls her “sunshine”.
- He keeps her in a constant state of anger in order to weaken her demon and stop her embedded sorrow.
- He craves for her smile.
- He gives her orgasms for the first time in her life.
- He wants to destroy her demon and make her happy.
- He treats her like she is His Woman.

There was no way their story would be simple.

Their background. Love? No, not really. Not any love at all for both of them.
Only many past lovers for Lazarus and a horrible mistress. Slavery is worse than death for someone who loves his power that much. Obviously he will ache for revenge.
Only a few past boyfriends for Cameo. But no love, only need. And lots of loneliness, even when she had a relationship.

Cameo is the keeper of misery and consequently her book is full of sorrow and darknesss. The story takes place at the Realms of the dead anyway.

Oh this book…. Amazing! Showalter’s writing is flawless - almost poetic.

On the whole, for me it is one of the best and strongest stories in the series. Highly anticipated and expected. It shattered my heart, blew away my mind and made me feel the strongest emotions.

No girl should be that sad, no man should be that harsh with himself. These two beings belonged together and they should never be alone again.

“I love you more than I can ever articulate, sunshine. You are my light on the darkest of days. To me, you are first. You will always be first. Nothing and no one will ever come before you.”

Worth mentioning: There are a few characters that also have a small or large part in this book like Viola, the children Urban and Ever (how cute is Urban!), Hades, William, Siobhan, and the Sent Ones Angels (Thane, Bjorn and Xerxes,) with their infamous bar “Downfall”.And of course there is the story of the Pandora ’s Box and the Morning Star which continues from the previous books.
But I think the story of Lazarus and Cameo overpowers all the side-stories.

Finally, I will like to emphasize that surely the story takes place at the darkest, gloomiest realms; nevertheless the series’ fans will feel like they are at the seventh heaven.

Going to try and keep this short-ish (who am I kidding? 😂) and straight to the point.

What I liked?
Lazarus

Everything else?

For me what made this decent was the ongoing development between Cameo and Lazarus prior to this book. Their story was built up since Torin’s book. So their (re)connection and his possessive ‘mine mine mine!’ in here carried weight. I felt it and believed it. This couple is perfect example of why I gravitate toward couples built overtime in this series rather than "warrior + insert random new woman here= insta-lust HEA!" template. A template Gena has exhausted to death at this point. Gena can no longer do gradual (organic) relationship development in just one book. She has her heroes spitting out "Mine!" by Chapter 3 to some random strange woman which just underscores the entire illegitimacy of the couple's relationship and chemistry. It's over before it starts with this approach. You need to sell us the goods before deciding to buy it, you feel me? The past 3 books is testament to that. But here, Cameo and Lazarus were sweet and not bad. Was some of the drama here overdone and convoluted? Yep. You bet. Don't even ask me what the whole "you picked to save me! You care about me! You don't care about me! You picked to stay with me over leaving! But you chose death over me! You betrayed me" convoluted merry go around even meant. I stopped trying to make sense of Cameo's confusing (non)logic half way in.

I feel like every LOTU book now reads like a riddle that you have to work hard to translate or uncode. And not in an intentional way either. Same as the last book, you have the characters talking in confusing circles and contradicting each other or blurting out new information like you, the reader, already know it but you don't so it's hard to follow along. Is your head spinning just reading that? Well just imagine that throughout an entire book. And once again, Gena really needs to work on solidifying her world building and tightening things up with better editing. Stuff that made no sense, even small, would pop up in places and take me out of a scene. Discrepancies such as Lazarus taking his shirt off for sexy time but next page his shirt is back on and getting stained, the couple is described as lying down on her bed but Lazarus "stands up to his full height" and Cameo is climbing on top of the bed....

Lazy stuff like this takes you out of a scene completely especially when you have to go back and re-read passages cause you think you are crazy. It rips you out of moments and destroys scenes.

And speaking of destroying....
-Galen just kicking it back in here with the Lords at the fortress, no big deal, all chill, like he wasn't out of his mind with worry and flying off to try and track down Legion at the end of the last book?! ....Uuuuh.....ok. WTF happened there?
-Torin cracking ill-timed crass death jokes and ribbing Galen when his supposed 'best friend' is near death and bedridden in the same fucking room?.........Um erkay. Stay classy asshole.

Stop having your characters turn into uncaring OOC indifferent assholes just because you want to throw in lame punch lines. It's insane (and confusing AF) and ruins whatever development you created in previous books.

These awkward clumsy inconsistencies and insane plot holes are just too obvious to ignore.

And the confusing dialogue of course. An example: Lazarus has crystals running through his veins and he believes he's dying. There is no known cure he knows of. He knows that. Cameo knows that. But she wants him to fight and find a loophole around it. They bicker over this and when he straight out reminds her there is no cure she yells at him there is a cure, like he knows this somehow and his response is: "another cure".

Um......WHAT CURE? Want to share with the rest of the class?

As for the other characters that played in here:
Siobhan: I’m already weary as fuck about this character and her role in William’s story. I think the mirror angle is very convenient insert to cover all areas. But….I am kinda intrigued by her. That moment between her and Hades was very ‘hmmm...interesting’.

William: *sigh* Oh William. Suck it up dude. You are NOW regretting not stepping up to save Gilly? Seriously? Yeah if only. If only the author didn't want to keep fucking around with you like this. *smacks hand* I still am unhappy with that move of his in The Darkest Torment and yeah doesn’t really make him look the greatest or look promising for Gilly. I'm just not really loving how passive aggressive he's acting which again I think is more of the author not being sure which way to take him. And that's evident in the contradicting back/forth dialogue. Which sucks because in the process, once again, it makes your characters come off out of character.

Viola: Color me surprised that for once I didn’t find this vapid character vapid. Girl showed some layers in here. Surprise surprise. Although some of the explaination of how her demon weakens her was a tad convoluted & hard to follow for me (I swear I'm not this slow, this shit is like a fucking jigsaw you have to decode). She has to stroke her ego to protect herself but hurt her own pride to keep the demon happy? Wha-huh? Her and that fallen Sent One Brochan is interesting.

Rathbone: A shapeshifting panther and one of the 9 Kings of the Underworld. He's a colorful character. Gena is really bringing in all kinds of mythical, paranormal, otherworldly characters. And it was good to see the beautiful sexy Sent Ones in here.

Bottom line: I said this book would be the deal breaker for me to decide whether I'll stick around or walk away. But I'm still undecided. 😕 I'm leaning more towards wiping my hands of this series given how burnt I feel by this author and I see the writing on the wall for William & Gilly. 😔 #HowToScrewOverYourReaders But I still want to read Galen's book, but I also don't want to stick around for the fuckery that will be William's book. So color me conflicted....and tired.

He couldn’t get enough of her, this woman who’d enchanted him past all reason. She was passion and pleasure, suddenly his sole reason for breathing.”

Is it just me, or does the wait between releases in this series get more and more painful every time I finish another book? Because I'm pretty sure I've been rocking myself in a corner ever since we got teased with the possibility of Lazarus and Cameo back in The Darkest Touch. You'd think that after 13 books in a series, I'd find my enjoyment waning, but it's the opposite. My obsession grows with each new character that gets introduced and I find myself wanting on bated breath until the next release.

Lazarus and Cameo were everything I'd hoped they would be and so much more! With Gena's signature humor, plenty of steam, and a plot that only gets more riveting with every page you turn; The Darkest Promise was an unputdownable read from beginning to finish.
Did you know twenty-one percent of women are unable to achieve an orgasm?”
“Must be the twenty-one percent I haven't slept with. I'm an orgasm donor.”

After Strider decapitated Lazarus back in The Darkest Surrender, I couldn't wait to see how everything unraveled. How is Lazarus still alive? Is it just because he's in the spirit realm. How could Cameo and him possibly make it work? How can he possibly see past Cameo's demon of Misery to the woman that's yearning for touch and love hidden beneath? Where is Pandora's box? And how will the war between Lucifer and Hades effect the Lords and their friends.

While we get answers to plenty of those questions, the final one is still keeping us hanging, and I for one can't wait to see what happens next. As for Lazarus and Cameo, I loved these two together. You truly get to see Cameo's fierce side come out in this book. The side that's so often veiled by the effects of Misery. I loved finally getting that piece of her, and Lazarus was the perfect man to bring it out.
A king by force. A drug dealer by choice. A lover by necessity.”

With plenty of secrets of his own, Lazarus "The Cruel and Unusual", the only son of The Monster, is one intriguing character. Ruler of the Realm of Grimm and Fantica, he's a man that's as equally feared for his ruthlessness as he is for his sexual appeal. But Lazarus is hiding a deadly secret; one that can cost him everything at the hands of the only woman that he craves like no other.
Despite the demon, she was the light in Lazarus’s darkness. She was smart and she was...everything. Before her, he’d known rage. Somehow, she had filled him with joy.”

There's a lot that happens in this book and there's a couple of new characters that get introduced that I'm already salivating for. One of them happens to have a very intriguing connection to Hades that I absolutely cannot wait to read about.

I binge read this book and found myself dreading the end of it. I love Showalter's humor and how she effortlessly manages to weave into her stories. Her characters may be tortured, but they don't take themselves too seriously, and I love it.
I can walk into a room and ruin a party,” she snapped. “You can open your mouth and do the same.”
Not missing a beat—when did he ever?—he traced his white-hot tongue around the shell of her ear. “Speaking of a party... I’m inviting myself to the one in your pants.”

Despite Cameo's demon, I loved her as a heroine. I was afraid that being inside her head would be...well...depressing. And while it wasn't full of rainbows and unicorns, I loved her inner monologue.
Her pain was so strong, so shrill she could almost understand a man’s suffering when he had a cold.”

As for the rest, guess you'll just have to read it to find out. But here's a small hint about what you'll find here:
1. William and his obsession with Ginny (we get a step closer and one HUGE twist into their story)
2. Hades. Holy mother of set ups but if what happens in this book is the possibility of what's to come, I'm practically salivating already.
3. Viola. Man oh man but the plot thickens with this one. I can't wait to see how it all unfolds.

I'm pretty sure that I may throw a slight tantrum if William's book isn't next. So I'll just be here on pins and needles, waiting to see just who Gena will give us with book 14.

4 Cameo/Lazarus Stars

*********SPOILERS*****************

To say I was worried going into this read would be an understatement. After the nap fest that was Baden's book I didn't have high hopes going into Cameo's book, even though I loved her and Lazarus. I ended up really enjoying this read for the most part. I loved Cameo and Lazarus relationship. I felt their connection. I also loved Viola, Ever and Urban. Urban was so damn cute with his crush on Viola. The flow of this book was much better. The plot good. there were a few things that bugged me which is why it's a 4 star read, instead of a 5.
For one as the series goes on it gets a bit more cheesy with each new book. The solutions for all the couples' problems are solved with over the top silly fixes. Each new one a bit more ridiculous than the last. In this one Lazarus goes from total badass to butterfly king that has to break out of his chrysalis. Are you fucking with me right now with that shit??? He was in a cocoon? That's what was killing him?

For another thing, stuff that was established in past books somehow gets changed. Like how did Viola go from being saved to back in the rod. Angels have turned into Sent ones. Puck somehow can turn Gilly into an immortal by marrying her. If it works that way why the fuck didn't Maddox do that for Ashlyn? The demons don't really have power unless the warrior gives it to them? Really? WTF? It's little shit like this that is really starting to bug me.

Still Lazarus and Cameo's love story was strong enough to pull off a good read for me. However I am worried about were the series seems to be heading. I am looking forward to Gilly's book. I was never a fan Gilly and Willam. DON'T COME AFTER ME..... lol It's just William was fucking around the whole time he had feelings for Gilly and it tainted what they could have had in my eyes. Just sayin'! I am wondering were GS is going with a goat boy husband though. I will keep an open mind for now.

So in love with cameo and Lazarus book!!! I love cameo and I'm so glad she finally got her happy ending. Cameo is one of the best characters from the dark series, any hot bad ass chic that can hold her own in a group of totally alpha males has got to be awesome. Her and Lazarus have a chemistry that burns up the pages and leads them both down the path of a love of a lifetime!! Their is a lot going on in this book and I love it. So many memorable moments with the Lord's and their ladies and let's not forget the big battle going on between Hades and lucifer their can only be one winner and neither of these big and bads is going down without a fight. Next book up in this awesome series is The Darkest warrior, can't wait!! Gena showalter's darkest series is one of the best series and her characters are phenomenal !!

"The Darkest Promise" is the 13:th instalment in Gena Showalter`s "Lords of the Underworld"-series and made me follow up on a magical, exciting and romantic journey through Lazarus Realm of Grimm and Fantica where the female warrior Cameo chooses to follow her happiness in the only man who have ever made her feel alive. So many emotions blew me away while reading this amazing book,it was filled with chemistry, longing, action, magic, friendships and the power of true love.I had been so excited to read about Lazarus and Cameo, and this book didn`t disappoint me at all.

Cameo possessed by the demon of Misery reminded me of Xena the warrior princess. What a kickass heroine! She was Kind but fierce. Caring but stubborn. Witty but morose. Protective but easily provoked. Compassionate but violent. All these traits made Lazarus fall in love with her.She was so strong for having enduring the emotional torture her demon put her on.Misery made Cameo remain in a constant state of mental, emotional and physical anguish and through her he was also able to harm others through her voice.

Lazarus the Cruel and Unusual is the ultimate Alpha-male that stole my heart already from his first appearance in "The Darkest Surrender".I love that he had been interested in Cameo before she even saw him,and that her voice didn`t bother him at all.Lazarus is Beauty and strength wrapped in smoldering sensuality and sprinkled with ferocity.I couldn`t take my eyes away from him.I loved the way he craved, yearned and loved Cameo. He hated weakness, but was ready to let the crystals kill him just for temporary happiness with Cameo. He had rather have that then live without her and that broke my heart.Tears ran down my face with the sacrifices Lazarus and Cameo made for each other, but the ending was so worth it all and i am so happy for these two soulmates!

William is suffering and plans to steal Gilly from Puck, but there was something Hades mentioned to William in the bonus scene and i wanted to hug for the rightness in how Hades proved something William didn`t even realize.Ahh but he will soon.He is so afraid of his fated soulmate that are bound to kill him,and that makes me excited!Madox and Ashlyns children-the little demon twins Urban and Ever are so freaking cute and adorable!Love the way Urban crushes over Viola, gaahhh he sure proves to be a stunning future hero of the series!I am also intrigued by the fallen Sent One Brochan who wish vengeance against Viola for betraying his brother.Again,Thank you Gena Showalter for another unforgettable keeper, this one will stay in my heart forever!

Finally we have the book I’ve been impatiently waiting for the last two years - Cameo and Lazarus!

“I can walk into a room and ruin a party,” she snapped. “You can open your mouth and do the same.”
Not missing a beat—when did he ever?—he traced his white-hot tongue around the shell of her ear. “Speaking of a party... I’m inviting myself to the one in your pants.”

Cameo is probably my favorite of the Lords of the Underworld. Possessed by the demon of Misery, she is unable to experience happiness or even love. Any time she dares to feel either of those, Misery wipes her memory. My heart just broke for this strong and brave heroine, who wanted so badly to be happy, to not cause sorrow in those around her, who had to fight daily against the unhappiness Misery continuously tried to make her feel. Two books ago Cameo briefly experienced desire and joy likes she’s never experienced before with Lazarus when they were captured in the Rod. But Misery erased every single happy memory and all Cameo knows is she can’t continue the way she has. And even though she can’t remember him, she believes that Lazarus might just be her only hope.

His hunger for this woman was insatiable, but he couldn’t have her.

Lazarus the Cruel and Unusual hasn’t had an easy life, but he’s managed to gain himself a kingdom and he’s determined to build his army and to seek vengeance against those who has hurt him and his family. All he needs to do is stay away from the one woman he craves like no other, but who is his greatest weakness. But keeping his distance from Cameo proves impossible, when all he wants to do is make her smile and entice her into his bed. I’ve loved Lazarus since he was first introduced, how ruthless he is, but also how different he is with Cameo, how he saw her and not her demon Misery.

He’d craved her before; she’d been a temptation. Now she was a necessity, essential to his existence.

I have pined for this romance for two long years and for the most part I loved Cameo and Lazarus in this book. Their witty banter, the sexual tension between them and how neither can stay away from the other. There was also a lot of push/pull in their romance, with Lazarus thinking Cameo was his weakness and trying to keep away from her, but unable to stop obsessing over her.

The plot continues with Lucifer and Hades at war, and all the other players having to choose on which side they will fight. I was very happy that we got to see the characters from Ms. Showalter’s other series, Angels of the Dark, as these Sent Ones are so very interesting and I’ve been waiting for her to continue with their series for 3 years! I crave books for Xerxes, Axel and Bjorn!!! Please Ms. Showalter can you write them??? I’m also VERY intrigued by Viola, the keeper of Narcissism and whatever is going on between her and Brochan, the brother of another Sent One, McCadden, which she has a bad history with. I hope we have a book for them soon!

This is such a great PNR series, full of great world-building and fantastic characters. A must read for all PNR fans.

** 2,5-3 “yawn” STARS **

To be honest, at this point I'm only continuing with this series because of William... All my fav characters aren't even mentioned much anymore, new characters resemble the old ones, the plots are somewhat not working for me and most importantly I'm a little tired of waiting for Gilliam to finally happen! It's been 11 books...haven't we been patient enough? And now after finishing this one, I'm not even sure if it'll ever happen...argh!

Gena needs to stop toying with her readers. Either give Gilliam a book, or imply in another one that it will never happen so we can all move on. Ugh.

At least I really liked the relationship between Cameo and Lazarus. It felt natural and right.
Also, I'm intrigued about Viola. I didn't like her much in the previous books, but she has definitely caught my attention now. The same goes to Siobhan. Let us hope for the best, but wait for the worst.

The Darkest Promise by Gena Showalter
Lords of the Underworld book 13. Dark paranormal romance. Best read as part of the series.
Cameo is the only female demon in the series. She carries the demon of Misery. If she experiences joy, her memory is erased. She is paired with Lazarus the Cruel.

Lots of crying by guards because of Misery.
Lots of dark actions and between Misery, Lazarus, and situations.
Worth reading if you are invested in the series since these two have been included in previous stories so it’s good they get their tortured, but happy ending.

Just so you know Gena, I'm done with this series until I find out what happens with William and Gilly.

I didn't even finish the last book.

I'm sorry but most of the females in this series are immature beyond belief, but somehow Gilly isn't WOMAN enough for William?

William the Ever Randy with his own 747 full of baggage and immaturity and irresponsibility?

Yeah. That's bull and I'm calling it.

I would love nothing more than to continue this series but until I know for sure what happens, I'm on a LoTU vacation.

You know, when you haven't read a book in a long time and you forget how much you loved it and then you read it again and remember, that's what I'm feeling right now. I read this book way before it came out, almost two years ago and at the time never wrote a review. I decided to reread it because the next book will be out soon and I wanted to dive back in the series. Best choice I've ever made.

The Darkest Promise is one of my favorite book from the Lords of the Underworld series. It's so poignant, powerful, with a strong hero and an even stronger heroine.

Cameo wasn't my favorite character, she never caught my interest but Gena really knows how to surprise her readers. I rediscovered this heroine throughout this book, it took me 13 books but I can definitely say I love Cameo. Being in her head, seeing how her demon truly affects her, really got to me. She's so kind and loving despite having to fight Misery 24/7, I loved her courage and how freaking strong she was. This one is for us, ladies. A powerful, confident heroine, able to defend herself and her man, not afraid to fight...and win.

I instantly liked Lazarus this book just sealed the deal. I loved everything about him, his confidence, his cockiness, how sweet and caring he was with Cameo, how utterly unaffected her demon made him, he made her feel powerful, he never brought her down, never thought less of her, always encouraged her to fight and kick ass. Lazarus himself was tough, pretty damn powerful and nearly untouchable and the fact that he saw an equal in Cameo right from the start made this book so much better.

Power couple you say? Hell yes! One of the best, strongest couple I know and I loved them together. I immediately connected with them, how their relationship quickly but surely developed. Lazarus remembered her but Cameo did not, that's why she went looking for him in the first place. Gena did a great job with this aspect of the story, she didn't make us wait too long for a reunion but she didn't rush things either, she found a pace that worked and she went with it.

If I had to choose one word to describe them, it'd be precious. I found their relationship so deeply moving and entertaining, I became emotionally invested, I shook my kindle, I yelled at it, it was great!

Another thing that really worked for me in this book was the world building, LOTU is a big series with a lot of different characters/realms yet Gena managed to woo me all over again. I was enchanted by the realms and how Gena described everything in such a vivid way, I was right there with Cameo. She even made me love Viola, a character I didn't care for and now I can't wait for her story.

Speaking of secondary characters, this book rocked. They never overshadowed the main couple but they were necessary to the story and, to be honest, they all were awesome. I already talked about Viola but she was not the only one. Hades is becoming one of my favorite as well as Siobhan. Rathbone, one of the nine kings of the underworld, captured my interested in a big way. William, of course, he will always hold a special place in my heart. So many untold stories waiting to be written, I cannot wait to read them all!

The Darkest Promise did keep its promise, a fantastic story about a spectacular couple, ready to face and battle everything and everyone for their happy ending.

Ohmygosh this was SO GOOD. I’ve been waiting for Cameo, Keeper of the Demon of Misery, to get her story – and it is better than I have imagined.

Plot
I literally have not gobbled up a book this quick in so long. My attention was 100% into it. This book has action, drama, romance, humor, mythology – dark moments, touching moments, what more could I want? This is definitely in the top 3 from the 16/18 books this entire world has so far.

And as always, this series always manages to shock me with how well-developed the plot is. It is a fuckin’ web, and I love how Showalter builds up everything, including the side characters’ perspectives that she features in each book. Like I legit have no clue what is going to happen and who is going to end up with whom for future books. I love the unpredictability and really, the mythological tie-ins are spectacular.

Characters
I adore Cameo. She is so fuckin’ adorable and badass. Even when she is flawed and hopelessly gloomy – you can’t help but feel to her and empathize with her. She always perseveres and I love how hard she is fighting to gain happiness. The moments when she finds bits of happiness is the cutest, sweetest thing ever. Especially the mud scene – agh. Everything about that scene touches my heart.

The surprise of this book for me is Viola. I always thought she was rather annoying – being the Keeper of the Demon of Narcissism. However, here, we finally get to see her perspective and she is actually kinda sweet and nice? She is funny and also loyal and sweet. I really can’t wait for her book now. I especially love her friendship with Cameo in this book. They are like complete opposites, but it works, and I appreciate it.

Romance
The romance is, well…, romantic. It truly gets increasingly better as I read. I was not sure how I would feel about Lazarus, but he seriously comes through in this book. I love that he is the only one who does not wince at her voice and he sees how hurt and insecure she is because of the gloom she brings to others (because of her demon). He looks past the gloom and appreciates her actual qualities. It is cute when he feels proud seeing her kick ass or seeing her finally break a smile.

He is the only one who can break her from Misery's hold and she is the only one who makes him into a softie. Agh - they're cute.

And here is a romance where I see both characters equally fight. They kick ass apart and together. I like the support and trust they have in each other’s abilities. Also, I adore their cute bantering and they get each other’s humor, and it’s aw.

Final Thoughts
I am giving The Darkest Promise (Lords of the Underworld #13) by Gena Showalter 4 stars. There are a lot of good moments in this book - cute, funny moments and heartwarming moments. I feel good reading this, and I adore the characters.

“When everything has gone wrong, rejoice. Something must now go right.”

Lazarus and Cameo's book was everything I wanted. Have been waiting for it since Kane's book.

Cameo is a better character than I anticipated, I thought she would be boring cause of her demon, but she is anything but. Despite the demon making her miserable as it does others.

Lazarus is amazing, I always knew this but his POV made him better, his thoughts are crazy. But his love for Cameo overcame his paranoia and quest for vengence on those that wronged him. He is even writing some books, here are some excerpts.

With an enemy, death should always come before surrender With your woman, your surrender will happen one way or another. Why fight it?”
—The Art of Keeping Your Female Happy
—The Secret to My Success

“Don’t try to stay ten moves ahead of your opponent. Stay behind him with a knife.”
—Excerpted from Becoming the King You Are Meant to Be, a work in progress by Lazarus the Cruel and Unusual

All the other Lords were also in this. Urban and Ever got so many page space and I love that.

Pre-review: I am very new to this series but I'm so curious to read these two MCs' story!!!Cameo, host of the demon Misery and Lazarus the Cruel and Unusual!! I want this book now! But...June...? The waiting is too much! *cries tear of pain*

Edited@05/07/2017:

Note: this is the first ebook I've ever bought!

I got really excited over this pairing even since The Darkest Touch and this novel with them as the main characters really doesn't disappoint! Romantic angst! Sexual tension! Adventures! Lovers driven apart by secrets and mistrust! A woman who is possessed by a demon that would wipe her memory clean every time she reaches true happiness! What more can I ask for!

I really enjoy the first half of the novel, Cameo and Lazarus, the main couple, really manage to get tension, longing and lust oozing out all across the pages...I mean....all across the screen of my freaking cell phone!

I really like the main couple as characters too (they are pretty badass, and sexy too), and the supporting characters by far are interesting as well.

Still, by the middle part of the book I got rather fed up by Lazarus being such a...pussy over his feeling to Cameo ()! I know he has reasons to withhold the truth but I surely do want him to man-up and come clean with poor Cameo. *laughs* Plus the plot about the main couple fighting their enemies together at the later half of the story and their constant romantic angst are a bit of a letdown too.

By the way, where the hell is the Lucifer's subplot from The Darkest Touch? This subplot is nowhere in sight and I never learn why the guy would try to kidnap Cameo in the previous book? Nothing is explained.

However, I still like how the problems are solved and explained in the end, so I issued a 4 smoking hot romance stars to this book.

Edited@02/09/2020:

In this re-read, the story is still going strong, I do like the main couple, and the sub-plots with the supporting characters too!

So done with the back and forth on William and Gilly. It's been how many years now and we're still getting baited? Used to love this series, now I'm just frustrated and skimming through the past two books... I love GS and this series, but it's starting to get a little old with waiting on characters for years and all we get is a few mentions. It's either let us know finally they will never be together in the next installment, or finally stop the baiting and give us their book. I've been a loyal fan for years, but now I'm just really frustrated. I feel like some characters actions are just on repeat in the past few books... I don't want to spoil people too much, but characters are just starting to blend together now. I love Gena and her books, and hopefully the next book will make me love this series again.

I've had a soft spot for Cameo since the very first time we meet her.  She's the keeper of Misery and she can't even speak without everyone around bursting into tears!  The girl has had it bad.  Plus, she's also had her heart broken when she was betrayed by a previous boyfriend.  I thought her little affair with Torin was interesting but I wanted to see more passion for her.  I wanted someone to tip the scale and give her so much pleasure it would override all the misery she's had to deal with.  And then we get Lazarus.  And boy was this exactly what I was hoping for!

Cameo and Lazarus have met, and even been lovers before.  But as with anytime she experiences joy, Misery wiped her memory of those encounters and she doesn't remember Lazarus.  But she knows there's one man she's maybe able to be happy with and she goes in search of him into another realm.

I LOVED THESE TWO!  OMG I wasn't even expecting to love them so much.  First Cameo, because the more you know about her and how she has to suffer with her demon, the more you feel bad for her and just want her to finally have happiness.  You want to see her smile!  And then there's Lazarus.  He's a bad boy, through and through, and I was happy to see that we are not changing the core of who he is.  But his love and devotion for Cameo really knows no bounds.  Even if that includes betraying her to keep her safe.  Or just relentlessly pursue her and tirelessly try to make her experience joy.  I really think he's perfect book boyfriend material and I couldn't have fallen more in love with him.  He's fierce when it comes to protecting the ones he cares about, whether his woman or his pet sky serpents.

Another thing I really enjoyed about this story was the obstacles they had to overcome to be together.  I love stories that seem impossible to have a happy ending because it just seems the author had to really dig to make that happen in a way that makes sense and doesn't feel "too easy".  This book satisfied that for me.  And through that search of their HEA we are also moving the overall series forward quite a bit, which I'm so excited to see.

This book is filled with Ms. Showalter's signature wit and humor.  I couldn't help but smile every other page, sometimes even in the middle of swooning.  That is definitely one of my favorite things about this series.  As much as I fall in love with the characters and the world building is engaging and intricate, it's that wit that gets me all giddy.  Ok, yeah, and the hot alpha men too. ;)

Anytime I crack open a Gena Showalter book I know I'm in for a fun and sexy ride.  THE DARKEST PROMISE delivers.  I think the overall series arc is building up nicely, this one is a great addition to all that while being an excellent romance on its own.  I am definitely anxious to read the next one.  Give it to me!

-- Excerpted from Becoming the King You Are Meant to Be, a work in progress by Lazarus the Cruel and Unusual

"A group of butterflies is called a kaleidoscope."  A group of men is called a migraine.

She had a Sexually Transmitted Demon, and almost everyone she dated ended up depressed at some point.

Lazarus kissed her without reservation, as if he wanted to savor her. At the same time, he kissed her as if he wanted to devour her. As if she were a treasure he'd sought his entire life - as if he planned to enjoy her forever.

Welllllll yes there definitely are spoilers ahead!!!!!!!!!!

From Lazarus' thoughts we realize that he had met Cameo on 2 previous occasions before being "trapped" in the Rod. On those occasions he recognized her as his μονομανία but because his own father's μονομανία led to his destruction Lazarus stays away from her. When they meet in the Rod he is aware of what she is to him and though they ended up making out Cameo is rescued without things going further.
Weeks later her demon has once again taken all happiness from her memories but she'd mentioned Lazarus so she set out to find him to regain her memories of their time together.

This is our reintroduction to Lazarus

"With a weary sigh, he detangled from two sleeping, clinging forest nymphs and rose from the bed and fastened the pants he’d refused to remove. His legs were not for public viewing. Ever."

☝see even though -"They had no idea he’d found nothing but disappointment in their arms. " that didn't stop the p.o.s from being with different women

"Lately, no one could satisfy him. Climaxing had become a frustrating impossibility, even on his own.
At least he never had to wonder why.
He’d found his μονομανία. His obsession. Or, to be more literal, his own personal kink. Long ago his father, Typhon, had warned him about her, ".....

Now see he full well felt the draw to Cameo but because of his father's fate he decided not to.go after her and keep availing himself of the women in his kingdom

Not only is he sleeping with them he's searching for a bride

“Word has spread throughout the kingdom, you seek a bride. Is this true?”
“Very.” He’d found his μονομανία, yes, but soon afterward he’d lost her. Desire for her still boiled in his blood and blistered his bones, and yet he’d made no effort to find her."

☝Oh Lazarus how I hate thee I can't count the ways!!!!!!

"He stripped, showered off the scent of frustration and sex and dressed for war,... " -😈😤

A short while after that ☝he finally meets Cameo again and almost starts foaming at the mouth with possessive thoughts wtf??? A lot of mine!mine!mine from the asshat who apparently didn't even plan to go after her!!!!!

So because of Lazarus the douchebag I skimmed to.the end of the book.
Another shocker was Hades who.I really thought would've been with Taliyah but seems this author
is now known for shocking couple switch ups 😂

From what I skimmed the story ran along the usual lines but with the introduction of Siobhan and the reappearance of Narcissism with a greater role here.

All in all my safety loving heart couldn't much focus past the part of Lazarus and the women nevertheless I'm moving on to the next (😨)

Me- sees book 4 in my gr feed
Me- ohhhhh maybe I should go back and finish that series
Also me - I've read all the books available 😭😭😭 it seems the hunt is still on for my next read

Side note my reviews for some of the books in this series are cracking me up 😂😂😂😂

Side note 2- Lazarus goes into my list with Chase, H's I wanna stomp into dust!

Quick thoughts

So, it was an improvement from the last 2-3 books in this series but it's not without it's flaws, of course.

Lazarus and Cameo were a HUGE disaster waiting to happen and it was really close to be exactly that but it wasn't just because we were already familiar with the couple. I think that if Cameo and Lazarus' story began in this book, it would've been a mess.

I don't know how long I can continue reading stories were the male character vomits the word "mine" pretty much in chapter 1 and expect the female lead to feel the same way... and expect me to be swooning over it and while this book was way better than the last ones, I still wonder whether Gena will ever improve her writing style. Her books are getting boring, outdated and just plain bad.

I like Gena but if she doesn't sit down and honestly think about her writing, I don't think I can read this series anymore which saddens me since I used to loved this world and its characters.

I liked Viola and her character development is slowly showing, I liked Lazarus (I guess...), and Cameo and the twins and yeah.

Cameo is possessed by the Demon Misery.

Lazarus, the Cruel and Unusual, a child of a god and ruler of a kingdom, will stop at nothing to crack Cameo’s unhappiness…but he also doesn’t want to keep her because of the curse his father has passed down to him.

Will he cruelly rip away any happiness Cameo might find?

Can they beat the untenable odds, the dark forces plotting against them?

You’ll have to check out The Darkest Promise the 13th book in the Lords of the Underworld series.

I have to say that Misery really is a downer with everything being whoa-is-me...

But in the end, an impossible relationship, imminent heartbreak and the odds of survival that defy all calculations and still Showalter manages to make it work!

I received this ARC copy of The Darkest Promise from Harlequin - HQN. This is my honest and voluntary review. The Darkest Promise is set for publication March 27, 2018.

I have loved Cameo from the start. Something about the air of tragedy about her appealed to me. To me, she is the Xhex (BDB) Arayal (Elder Races) analogue from this series. If you know, you know. I always love them. My girl crush type is the stern, somewhat hardened female warrior beauty with the tough armor around her soft heart. At first, she seems like she'd rather beat you up then talk to you, or she's maybe just a little standoffish, or just all business. And for some reason, they always have black hair and gray/green/silver eyes. I would throw Michonne and Okoye in there too.

So when I knew Cameo was getting a book, I was like, heck yeah. And good news is, I love this book. I see that her and Kane are really good friends and that's good for both of them. I admit I liked her with Torin, although I totally see why they didn't work together. When that didn't turn out, I wondered who she would end up, and I didn't expect it to be a guy like Lazarus at all. So Lazarus isn't the kind of hero I typically gravitate to. He's arrogant, rude, on the surface kinda sleazy, and all the things I'm like, "no thanks" about generally. But, but, wow, the way he melts for Cameo and absolutely falls head over heels for her, it was a joy to read. This king would legitimately hand his crown over to his queen. Watching him fold for her turned me into mush. Now, I love them as a couple. I really want to do a reread because this is one of my top five from the series. I'm probably going to get dragged for this but I much prefer Lazarus to William. I think it's because Lazarus at heart really isn't a selfish person like William is. But this review is not about William bashing.

Poor Cameo. I feel like her demon is one of the worst because she makes everyone so sad. That must be awful to be so isolated. That's why I love how much Lazarus loves on her.

To me, Lazarus and Cameo are a power couple. I might to make some fan art of them. I love a big strong man who loves his tough strong woman.

The story is good, and I had no complaints, but I mainly fangirled over Camazarus when I read this. Obviously five stars!

Was waiting for this book and really loved it, but it lacked the steam that Baden's book got. Honestly the romance was a really good build up but the sex was lacking. Normally that's not too big of an issue for me, but just know that this is the 13th book of a series with pretty high levels of steaminess, and this lacked that a LOT, especially since book 12 had a shit load of smut, so that confused me, otherwise i loveeeed cameo and lazarus

Tortured falls for melancholy only to be transformed into something miraculous. The latest book in this Series is just as dark and depressing as the previous ones. For those who have not read the previous books, this book can be read as a standalone. Ms. Showalter does an excellent job of re-capping the events up to date. She also creates a deeply moving story of two lost souls.

Cameo is one of the few women who are part of the Lords of the Underworld. She is literally cursed with the demon Misery. Just her voice or even a small hum from her can elicit a suicidal spiral. One would think the strongest are those who are happy and joyful. Not so, just her presence will suck the joie de vivre from everyone. This is everyone except Lazarus. Lazarus is known as the Cruel and Unusual king in the realm of Grimm and Fantica. He also has a past with Cameo she can not remember.

Both Cameo and Lazarus are characters mired in angst. They are marinated in sorrow and cooked in despair. When it comes to violations, Ms. Showalter ups it several notches because it is more than just physical pain. Both Cameo and Lazarus's free will have been stricken from them. They are forced to do things they do not want to do. This heinous transgression upon a person's mind is an intimately private abuse. I felt badly for both characters and wished only vengeance upon the perpetrators. It is questionable if either can be sane after centuries of torment. I am fond of books which make me feel some kind of emotion. This one definitely makes me feel sadness tinged with righteous anger. Who does this kind of thing? Only evil.

Still, this is a paranormal romance so there is a happily ever after, albeit a slightly bittersweet one. The romance part is conflicted as Lazarus seems to be weakened by Cameo's proximity and love. The sex parts are erotic with plenty of edging and deferred gratification. This amuses me and I enjoy Cameo's frustration.

What can be confusing is all the different Greek demi-gods warring with each other. Mix in a dash of angel mythos and it all goes to hell in a handbasket. For those who do not have a basic knowledge of Greek mythology, this series can be confusing. For those who enjoy Greek mythology, Ms. Showalter does a great job of showcasing just how petty the Greek gods and goddess can be. I'm not surprised by their cruelty and heartlessness. Fits right in with their selfish desires. This plays well in this complex world Ms. Showalter has created. With each realm she adds, it becomes more interesting and interconnected. This book provides a couple of big reveals which makes more sense about Pandora's box. The theme for this series should really be, "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned". This paranormal romance is recommended for readers who enjoy dark anti-heroes and edgy erotica.

I was super pumped for Cameo and Lazarus back when they where announced but my passion cooled when they where followed by Gilly and the Goat and now William and his Pony. It took me more than a year to read this, and the couple itself was very standoffish. I could not feel any emotion from them whatsoever. And even though the stakes where high, I never managed to be invested.

I am very disappointed that Gena seems to have lost interest in this series and her characters for a long time yet she keeps putting out books that are sub par at best. Comparing this to book 2, it doesn't even feel like the same series.

"His black heart shattered. How many times had this woman faced rejection?"

Wow.....This book made my heart race, goosebumps spread all over my skin, and I'm trying to wrap my head around what just happened. The Darkest Promise is by far my favorite book of this year! I was hooked from the very first page, and could not put it down. PNR lovers you need this series in your life. Even though you can read this book as a standalone, I highly recommend reading the other books in the series to get a better understanding of the setting, and the characters. My review is spoiler free, so your safe to continue reading. ;)

"Story of my life. Always better off alone."

Cameo is possessed by the demon of Misery. She can witness bits of happiness before it is all taken away. She is lost, and alone. And she hates it. Cameo envies the relationships between the Lords and their women. She wants to have that special someone, to love and to cherish her. And that man is none other than Lazarus.

Lazarus the Cruel, lives for one purpose. Build his army and annihilate his enemies. But on the back of his mind is the one woman who has the ability to destroy him.... Cameo.

""Take me unawares once, my bad. Take me unawares twice, you die."

Cameo and Lazarus's chemistry was off the walls. They were total opposites but couldn't be more perfect for one another. Cameo is Lazarus's doom, but he want's one night, full of passion and to bring Cameo pleasure. But after one taste, they both can't get enough.

When word get's out that Pandora's Box has been stolen, The Lords and Cameo are hell bent on finding it. If it get's in the wrong hands... all hell will pay. No one is safe, war is coming, and the Lords are ready. Both Cameo and Lazarus know their relationship was doomed from the start, but is their a way for them to be together, with her being the keeper of Misery? Or will she once again be all alone.

Read to find out.
**************************

The Lords of the Underworld series is one that will forever stay with you. Showalter sends you to a magical world, full of mystical creatures, angels and demons. I can't express how much this series means to me. I love it so much, anything Gena Showalter writes is a must read. I highly recommend reading the entire series  to every PNR lover out there. Fast paced, full of romance, and action. Definitely one of my favorite reads of this year, and also my favorite book written by Gena.

I am so excited to see who's book is next!

Sen o kadar bekle yaşadığın hayal kırıklığıyla kal... 😒
@ilknur a.k.a iko, sus, gülme!

description “You never told me your name.”
The fragments of his heart withered. “I’m Lazarus, known to all as Cameo’s man.”
