OLD SCORES, NEW RULES When Max and Sandra moved to North Carolina, they walked into a world of ghost, witches, and curses. Over the years, and with the help of the ghost of 1940s detective Marshall Drummond, they have fought to build a life for themselves. But now, it all goes on the line. No fight of their past can match what awaits when the Hull family and the Magi Group go to war. Caught between the magic and muscle of these groups, Max and Sandra will have to call in all the help they can find if they are to survive. Only one thing is for sure. Everything will change. Bestselling author Stuart Jaffe brings you an all-new Max Porter Paranormal Mystery that’ll leave you stunned and wanting more.
Stuart Jaffe is the madman behind the Nathan K thrillers, Max Porter paranormal-mystery series, The Malja Chronicles, The Bluesman series, and much more. He has written numerous short stories in Fantasy, SF, and Horror. He was also the co-host of The Eclectic Review (http://eclectic.libsyn.com) -- a podcast about science, art, and well, everything.
Stuart lives in rural North Carolina, and for those who keep count, the latest animal listing is as follows: one dog, two cats, one albino corn snake, three aquatic turtles, assorted fish, seven chickens, and a horse. Thankfully, the chickens and the horse do not live inside the house.
This is a great conclusion to the Red Trilogy, and the dynamic between Max and Drummond is as entertaining as ever. The group dynamic feels like it is growing organically and is impressive to watch them overcome some crazy obstacles. As always the audio narration lifts this story higher with some wonderful inflection in the voices.
This was an amazing ride! All the players are making their big moves with Max and Sandra caught in the middle. They will have to rely on their wits and research to survive this epic standoff. Max is cursed by Mother Hope to be part of both worlds until he does what she requests of him. Luckily, Sandra had made a new friend who is a witch and they manage to lift the spell – or at least most of it. I really enjoy all the research that goes into these books and the history that is shared! Curious what is next for the crew!
Love max porter books! now i am hooked. This was such a great, easy and creative book. i was hooked after the first page.
The characters were easy to fall in love with and follow, along with the story. the author made the mental visions so easy and vivid of the surroundings and the characters actions felt so real.
i would highly recommend this author and this book.
I discovered Stuart Jaffe's Paranormal-Mystery series just before book 6, Southern Curses was released. The main characters are husband and wife and a ghost detective who adds a Noir flavor to the stories. The characters may have some special abilities but Stuart does a great job of letting us experience their day to day lives and the interaction, frustrations and joys as they adventure thru the paranormal and reality. They are not "super heroes" and the story lines involve them solving the mysteries in "realistic" way, using their limited special abilities, their humanity, their teamwork and their brains. I have been devouring this series, as fast as a book a day, when I am able to keep reading, and you will want to keep reading.
I received a free copy of book 6, Southern Curses, in exchange for an honest review. I purchased book 1 through 5, and because I believe in supporting authors I enjoy, I also purchased a copy of book 6 when it was released. If this sounds like your kind of story, I highly recommend it to you.
Max,Sandra and Drummond do it again fighting magic with magic. The master researcher gets to the bottom of the mystery. They weaken the Hulls. Mother Hope is still kicking and as leader of the Magi Group still a threat. Can't wait for them to recover and have more adventures. PB is recovering. This finale was wonderful I received this book from the author in exchange for this honest review.
Max porter fights to stop a civil war with familiar characters. I thought still story made with interesting twists and turns without becoming tedious and predictable. If you enjoy the series this is a welcome addition. I am giving it four out of five stars. The only thing missing was divine intervention.
I enjoyed this book, the first of the series that I have read. Like the magic and the twists and turns that it allows and the dynamics of the antagonists. Also having lived in Winston-Salem for awhile reading of places I have been to is fun. I received this e-book from the author in exchange for a review. A very pleasant read with magic as a major influence.
You know this book is going to be powerful if both the Hulls and Mother Hope are involved. Max, Sandra and Drummond destroy one and Max is cursed by another. Awesome read.
