Shadows
It's not easy, being King. Especially when you've got an allergy to sunrise and sunset, a fire-goddess for a mother-in-law, demonic adversaries, random assassins, and a basement full of insecurities to cope with.
Add to that his daughter, the priestess/princess, a couple of lightly-deranged professional magicians, a whole city full of wizards, and enough squabbling princes to resemble a kindergarten argument.

I like Eric. (Or Halar, depending on what name he's going by.)
I also hate Eric.
He's a frustrating character. He shows flashes of brilliance mixed with appalling stupidity, just as if he were still a human being. He strikes me as being incredibly insecure without having the faintest clue about how insecure he is. Which is odd, considering everything he has going for him.
Or is it odd? Maybe he's insecure because he doesn't believe he deserves all the things he has. Or is that a paradox?
I also hate Eric.

I like this series. It reminds me a lot of the Firestaff series by James Galloway: an overpowered main character, with dark/violent tendencies.
But while I definitely enjoyed the first book, this one was very disappointing. Too much time was spent on obscure, technical points of pseudo science and magic. I found myself skipping many passages that were too boring and didn't add anything to the story, characters or even worldbuilding. At the same time, many sub-plots were left hanging without any resolution :
It's like the author was drown in a story that became too complex and forgot half of what was supposed to happened, but instead focused on incredibly lengthy explanations of technology/magic which interests him more.
Despite all that, I still found the book decent... if it wasn't for an atrocious ending. While the revelation of the villain's identity was a surprise, his goal was very obvious (at least to me) and still the protagonist rushes right into it... And this ending wasted all that happened previously in the story. Did you like the building of the kingdom ? How the main character grew his reputation and relationships with all the side characters ? Then you're in for a very bad shock. I do not want to see all the damage when our main character eventually comes back. A shame but I don't think I'll read the follow-up.

Three quarters of the way through and I've finally had enough. The continuation of Eric, the Nightlord's saga is a pedantic bore.
Whereas the first installment was a constantly changing adventure story, it's sequel is a mind melting, world building tour de force. We follow Eric as he builds his kingdom and secures it from his enemies which at first is interesting however as the book progresses and he's still just building his kingdom it gets rather dull.
Besides this we get front row seats as Eric talks to himself for pages and pages as he works out the magic system and pseudo-sciences of his world. My brain went to sleep several times before I finally just said fuck it.
The story progresses with little urgency as Eric plays with children, trains knights and makes hollow threats. The action is presented in little vignettes which hang together poorly as Eric flexes his mighty wizard powers.
I'm sorely disappointed.

It is hard to write reviews for books this long since there is so much that happened. I really enjoyed the first 3/4 of the book. So much so that I went out and bought the next 2 books in the series on audible.com. The last 1/4 of the book dragged on and on. The last hour of the book was just useless and I absolutely hated the ending. I hated it enough that I went back to audible.com and returned the next 2 books that I had already bought. It wasn't just the ending. I did check out my friends reviews for the next 2 books and it didn't look good. These are people in whom my tastes are similar enough that I knew I would hate the next book and probably would think the 4th book is just okay.
This book finds Halar waking up after 87 years being asleep. His body was severely damaged at the end of the last book and I guess he needed that much time to heal. He wakes up to find out that the city he established is actually doing well but there is almost no one left that actually knew him though there are a few. I was a little disappointed in the continuity issue at the beginning that was never addressed. In the last book, he was not able to use magic at night. In this book he was able to use magic at night. I was upset because there wasn't even a single sentence to indicate how that had changed or Halar was glad his magic use was better. I had just finished the last book and it was fresh in my mind.
I felt more emotion in this book that in the last book . Even though there were conclusions to some storylines/character arcs, I don't think the author does a good job of seeing things through, especially in relationships. Halar finds out that his daughter is the fire witch now and the priestess of the sun. In the last book she was a friendly God and was helpful to Halar.
Then there is Torc, the little girl with the missing foot from the first book. When Halar wakes up, he finds that she is now a magician and has used spells to stay young, even though she is more than 90. She calls him her Angel and it is obvious that she wants him.
The reason I am so upset about the ending is that this book as 41 hours long. The entire time Halar is preparing to deal with the "bad guy".

Excellent
Firstly, this book is the second in a series, so if you haven't read "Nightlord: Sunset" yet, please do. And that's the second thing, really - please DO read these books, because they're outstanding examples of what a good narrative should be. The author walks us through the (almost) minutiae of the protagonist's daily life, dialogue, and lots of introspection, but does with such skill that it's believable and actually hard to put down. The next thing you know you're heavily invested in the story. That's a good author, folks. Another amazing thing is the *length* of these things! In a time when glorified novellas (even good ones) are sold as serial episodes it's wonderful to get a real bang for your buck and read for days. I highly recommend that you read this series.
To the author: You've got me hook, line, and sinker... and terrified for Eric and his friends, so um please don't, you know, kill them all? Thanks.

3.5 to 4 stars, still really good and I will continue with the series. I do like these type of stories/books.

This book is basically eric vs eric.
The fight between his depraved side and its good side.
The villan in this book was so methodical and precise and I loved it.
This essentially shows what protagonists can do if it's evil and the good guy is basically him and he outmatched him in every way possible.
This also shows how naive and stupid a good guy protagonist can be and how evil and methodical the evil protagonist can be.
This book is basically eric vs eric.

I hardly know where to start with this.
First of all.
The MC is waaay too gary stu. He is the lord of darkness and the ultimate whiteknight.
He is what you would get if you turned Don Quixote into a vampire.
He helps everyone, cures the sick, turns enemies into allies, everyone loves and worships him, all the women want him, he is immortal, can read minds, telekinesis, prophecy, u name it.. 'My Angel' does it or have it.
And if you are thinking that he might be a bit of a shady character because of the fangs and all, you would be wrong. 'My angel' only kills in selfdefense or those who wants to die, the fangs are pretty much ornamental.
He is much more a Jesus character than a Dracula.
Im not saying such a character cant work in a fantasy story, but you will have to have a really good supporting cast to make up for the one-dimensional main character.
I wont spoil you completely, but lets just say this isnt the sort of series you stick with because of the side-characters - they get old pretty quick.
Another way to make up for the MC could be a really interesting and well balanced and thought out plot, but this seemed meandering through most of it and the ending was just completely random and weird.
This feels like it falls under the escapism tag, and as such i think it does it's job fairly good, despite its flaws.
It does entertain, gives you some feel good moments and i never felt it was boring as such, despite realizing the story was going all over the place and nowhere at the same time.

High hopes, let down.
I had high hopes going into this one that it would be a straight continuation, that Halar/Eric would be able to settle down and have some family time before things went to hell. Nope. After an almost 100 year long coma(basically), he wakes up to find that nearly everyone he knows is dead. Tamara is old and semi insane after the fire goddess forced her to kill their son on the slopes of the mountain, and Tort is now Ana duly whon has kept young through magic. And she’s got the hots for her former step dad. It’s all…kinda slimy feeling? Idk. Didn’t set great with me. Then it’s one hit after another through the book, and to top it off, at the climax of the book Halar gets his body stolen by his evil “son” and from the looks of things book 4 will pick up after another time skip and now he’s known as the Demon King in book 3. I’m really sad that the author took this path. I love his writing, and I like the characters mostly. But I just can’t stand where he’s taking the story. Hopefully this will help someone else. I won’t be going any further with this series.

That's enough for me. The never-ending perfection of the protagonist is wearing me down. This is a dream-like wish fulfillment. Despite being expert at everything, the Nightlord spends far too much time wringing his hands, lamenting that he's not good enough, not moral enough... can't give enough. Sigh.
The ending really brought home how flawed this approach is in a book. Despite being such an obvious white knight, we're regularly reminded that Eric has demons in his subconscious. Apparently, his inner urges are so bad that they live in a sort of hell in his mental basement. Not that we ever see this in his actions. MAJOR INCONGRUITY: Why don't the creatures of his Id affect his behavior at all?
A character with no significant failings, who never gets embarrassed and has no regrets, does not feel real to me. The longer it goes on, the less real it feels.
The ending really brought home how flawed this approach is in a book. Despite being such an obvious white knight, we're regularly reminded that Eric has demons in his subconscious. Apparently, his inner urges are so bad that they live in a sort of hell in his mental basement. Not that we ever see this in his actions. Wow, everything that made the first book so fun and gripping are here again. In an annoying mix or boring and not quite funny.
The Mary-Sue is back in full effect. As is the casual sexism, male wish fulfillment, and a small dose of creepy.
While he at least starts as a vampire this book so we don't have to relive that, the boredom and repetition begin as he once again finds loyal new retainers, builds a network, brings people to his worldview and yet again, goes to war. The villain is telegraphed quite early on and little is done to dissuade the reader from believing it is what it is.
This is a major drop in reading enjoyment from the first book and has, in fact, put me off the rest of the series. If you were only on the fence for the first book, give this a miss. If you think the first book was the best thing ever, give this a shot but be warned, it's pedantic and lacks in cleverness.

really liked the first book but the second book feels like it has no plot or just a very bad one it's like watching someone play a city building game and keep talking about technological magical explanations with a few assassination attempts that he just does not care about until the ending of the book. just a long book of him building up his kingdom for a complete shit ending have no clue how i even finished the book nothing worth while happened in it was just like the author kept going on and on until he decided where he wanted to go with the book and boom it's done. i really liked the first one so will probably give book 3 a try and hope the author don't mess that one up too.

Either step-up or step-down.
His cowardice from responsibilities really getting old. This is the 2nd book and he still behaving like a child. Every chapter he keep whining how he cannot be the lord/king. Every interaction he have is like this... *Nooooo, don't worship me, I'm just a normal dude*. He already been in this magic world more than a year, he should adapt to the new reality. Stop this humble bullshit, it seriously getting old.
Every time other people call him king/majesty/highness or show any type of respects he keep refusing to acknowledge it. That it self are disrespectful.

Ends in a cliffhanger and plot moves as much as the Wise Man's Fear did - not a great deal.
A lot of of moral and ethical inner monologue's about what he feels he's doing. Like superman's challenges are mostly moral.
Paragraphs about magical workings and theories that do nothing to the plot but seems to be there for increased word count. All of that makes it feel half as long as it should be.
Still interested in the story but hope he improves on book 3 otherwise might push any books down the TBR list.

The mother of all cliffhangers!
That's how this book ends. I can find no evidence to support the fact that there might be a third book. This is highly aggravating. The book was essentially a lot like the first book, which wasn't necessarily bad. But you expect more to happen in the sequel, and "The Final Confrontation" was really anticlimactic compared to the rest of the story. I'm now waiting for the next book (IF THERE EVEN IS A NEXT BOOK?!) because I can't accept this as THE END.

Complexities and complications
While the first book was a nice, if not particularly attractive setup, this book takes a deeper look on the Nightlord while he's playing to be king, and trying to right the wrongs. It might seem too linear and simple with how the people revered him, but the twisted end made us all sympathetic with the whole setup. The cliffhanger made us all wonder if he could be better than himself

Meh
Frustrating. I was expecting so much more after enjoying the first book so much. I found myself losing interest during this book because the author focused on inventions helping the characters quality of life. There were a few cool parts, but they were far between. The end kills me! It was finally getting good and oops epilogue!

Definitely not as good as the first one. Of course it had a different premise but I still found it extremely entertaining and enjoyed reading it, at least until the end.
Having him build up his reputation and his kingdom and his relationship with his family and friends and than end it with the "evil version" of him took over his body... Just doesn't sit right.

I enjoy the concept of the book but in the second book, I feel like too much-unrelated information.
For example, half of the book is gone before he even wants to find his sword or Bob.
I feel like being told about the land, the kingdom, and Earth concepts that have no true connection with this land.
I mean is the night load a doctor, a physition a geek or engineer? Pick one

Decent world-building and magic system. Flat characters and uninteresting story.
The main character has no real flaws, except insecurity and self-depreciation, which are the pseudo-flaws one gives to a Mary Sue. I’m sure there are ways of doing insecurity as a character flaw well, but I would look elsewhere for good examples of its implementation— *cough* Rhythm of War *cough*.

Sadly DNF'd after roughly 50%. It wasn't to say that this was a bad book, just not for me. Really enjoyed the first book, but just had trouble getting into this one. This should have been my ideal book - a mage-vampire in a medieval setting with a lot of elements of kingdom building. It just didn't click for me. It happens.

I loved the first book, but for some reason I'm having trouble getting through this one. I'm determined to finish though, and I am going to continue reading the entire series. There isn't as much excitement in this one as in the first.

Tedious, disorganiized and without a story line. Don't bother.

Tedious, long and frustratingly annoying but very good in places. Despite finding it a bit of a slog (especially the first half) I am still compelled to find out what happens next.

For the stupidest ending ever, even worse that I read 1000 pages of it to come to this. The fact that interludes stopped midway adds to this. Highly disappointed.

Ruined it
You can read a book and like most of it but if it has a stupid ending it ruins all the rest at least for me so read it if you don't mind hating the ending
