About the author

Sir Henry Rider Haggard, KBE was an English writer of adventure novels set in exotic locations, predominantly Africa, and the creator of the Lost World literary genre. His stories, situated at the lighter end of the scale of Victorian literature, continue to be popular and influential. He was also involved in agricultural reform and improvement in the British Empire.

His breakout novel was King Solomon's Mines (1885), which was to be the first in a series telling of the multitudinous adventures of its protagonist, Allan Quatermain.

Haggard was made a Knight Bachelor in 1912 and a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1919. He stood unsuccessfully for Parliament as a Conservative candidate for the Eastern division of Norfolk in 1895. The locality of Rider, British Columbia, was named in his memory.

This is the longest book I have read in quite some time (10.2 MB), but I enjoyed it a lot. It's actually a compilation of (I think) 15 novels and short stories featuring Allan Quatermain. I had read several of them many moons ago when I was a teen, but I suspect this is the most complete gathering of the Quatermain series to be found these days at least. They were published in the early 20th century and are dated in vocabulary and attitudes toward the native peoples of Africa, but are still great adventure yarns, and include some interesting philosophy and mythology as a bonus. I purchased it to read King Solomon's Mines which was mentioned in another book I read as part of the Popsugar Challenge, but went on to read the entire compilation and thoroughly enjoyed it. Some of the old fashioned stuff I read as a teen has not held up as well for me, but this series is still fun.

Each section was almost impossible to put down once I had started. Although fictional, there is enough approximation / association with history to make it a fascinating read.

It was rather interesting from a historical standpoint of the way things were at the time and the differences from now with speech and mannerisms and views, etc. It was a struggle getting through 15 books and was also interesting how all the stories were intertwined. I think if I had to read it instead of being able to listen to it through my kindle I never would have made it though it can be a touch dry in spots. Overall I liked it though and if you think you might like some old English African adventures in the jungles then I'd say try a book or two.

This was a great classic adventure book. It is like reading an English version of Indiana Jones. Some portions stretch a little long in detail, but their are two major battles in which the main characters engage that prove very entertaining. So too are the travels they encounter before and between each of these battles.

King Solomon's Mines is good, but many of the other stores seem to go on far too long and sort of belabor the point. A few of them (like Allan Quartermain), felt towards the end like he was being paid by the word.

Still, overall good.
