Native Realms chronicles the life and tiimes of the Polish-American community of Portage County, Wisconsin. Full of family stories, original narratives, and hundreds of photos, maps and works of art, the book is beautiful rendition of the birth and development of a unique American community, which began in the 1850s and thrives into the 21st Century.
I chose to read this book because I will be attending a museum conference in Stevens Point in September. Part of the conference entails a tour of Polish sites in Portage County. I wanted to get a feel for the Polish Community and learn a little so that I wasn't going into the tour completely in the dark.
I found the book to be very informative and interesting. It really gave me a base feel for the Polish Community and what I could expect on the tour. I am now even more excited for the tour because I am sure I will see and get even more history on the places that Michael Goc talked about in his book.
This is my first book about the Polish so I don't have anything to compare it to but I felt it was a worthwhile book to read. There were many names mentioned but also a lot of history on how the Polish had such an important role in creating Stevens Point.
