A case of mistaken identity led to Niklaus Volkov's worst night in his life. Being tortured for days wasn't even the worst part. That came in the form of having to watch his girlfriend, the love of his life, be murdered in front of him. When he was let go he vowed he would get revenge on those who took his reason for breathing away. So when an offer was made for him to train and get the skills needed to take down those men, he accepted. He became Red.

Years later he's almost to the end of his mission, taking out anyone that was there the night his life ended. But then he meets her. Reagan. It was only supposed to be one night, maybe two. She changes things for him, things he never thought could be changed. And he doesn't know how to deal with it.

I have a newly found obsession with anything Mafia so when I saw this book I thought it was the perfect opportunity to discover a new author and quench my thirst for a hot Mafioso. Klaus was everything I could hope with his crazy possessiveness, his, bordering on stalkerish, behavior, and the sexy as hell hint of crazy he had. I just can't resist a man like him when it comes to my reading and by the end of the book I was more than a little in love with him.

As much as I loved Klaus' character, Reagan was the complete opposite. I didn't like her that much, mostly because I felt like I didn't know her. So much of her character was skipped over so that the story could focus on Klaus and his vengeance, which I loved getting to know more about, but I do wish we had gotten more of Reagan's story. There were things about her life while Klaus was away that weren't explained fully and it made me a little confused about, not just her character, but the storyline.

Overall, I really liked this writing and the authors twist on the normal Mafia book. I may have had some issues with how the story played out but I will still definitely be checking out this author for more. There were many side characters mentioned that I'm dying to know more about so I'll be going back to read those books very soon.

I believe it would have been helpful if I had read the previous series first and that was the reason for my great confusion.

The story had a very weak heroine, was repetitive and there was lack of romance.

MY RATING
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I've not read anything previously by this author before BUT I do have a weakness when it comes to mafia reads, they are up there with my biker books..

Even though a lot have stated that you need to read the series before this book, I still ended up really really enjoying this, BUT yes I do agree with people you really do need to read the series before this book because it delves into all the vital characters back grounds which this book doesn't do, so for that reason I'm definitely going to read the other books.

This book had EVERYTHING I could've wished for in a mafia book, the over the top bad boy, the grit, the slow burning love between her and him, the killing, vengeance, redemption, the list goes on and on..

RED: The beginning of the book is solely focused on Sarah and Niklaus. These two were as different as chalk and cheese, Sarah came from an affluent family and Niklaus was the son of a Russian immigrant.

They met when they were both sixteen
He was twenty-one when he knew he wanted to marry her
She was his one
So he flew her to New York, planning his big moment of proposing
He had the ring all chosen
But before any of the above could happen
They were Kidnapped
Thrown into a van
Held/tortured for three days
One doesn't make it out of the hell they endured

When they met, it hadn't been love at first sight, not even second.
Soon their friendship had turned into something more.
hate had turned into acceptance
Acceptance had turned into attraction

Straight away this book has you thrown into the grit when a mistaken identity lands these two in the hands of very dangerous men,
demanding answers, to questions he doesn't have.

Then we meet Mishca Volkov his father was the Pakhan - the boss - of the Volkov Bratva, Russian Mafia.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

As far as Mishca was aware he only had a sister, it was a shock to his system learning he had a twin and he couldn't understand why his mother had kept him secret from the family.

Neither knew the other existed

Vengeance was all he knew...

And death was all he lived for...

Until it wasn't...

Until her...

Trained to be a killer, to be the best at all weaponry handling, revenge at it's sweetest, only one woman became his undoing.

MY THOUGHTS
In the beginning this was relatively easy to get into, then as the story progressed more characters are introduced, keeping track of who is who, what role that person plays in the book makes it semi hard keeping up with the storyline..

Stalking the authors page I read a comment made on there by a reader asking if this could be read as a standalone and the comment back was no, above it states this is book#1 within this series which is probably why I'm confused in some parts with all these characters roles..

"Pain is inevitable, learn to love it."

Guess who got their hands on an early copy of this baby?

AFTER READING:

I started this the other night, the early copy, and read through a span of four hours straight to the finish. It was two in the morning by that point. I then stayed up another two hours just to pick the author's brain on this book, and really, let's all just stop and give London a moment to thank her for Red.

Or Klaus.

Or Niklaus.

All depends on who you are to him, and what you wanna call him.

FYI, total side note here, you might think you know how to say Niklaus, or even just Klaus, but I bet you're saying it wrong. It does not read like it looks, heh. ;)

Small summary of events for you with this novel:

Red. has had a pretty crappy hand dealt to him simply by--or what seems to be at first--circumstance. The book opens up with a scene of him walking with Sarah on the streets of New York. For anyone who has read the Volkov Bratva series before you picked up Red., or if that series was what sent you here to Red., then you know who Sarah is, you sort of know who Klaus is and what happened. He's Mishca Volkov's twin--an unknown brother until those circumstances I mentioned shoved them back together--and Mish, well, he's a Russian Bratva boss, or that's where he ends up getting to. But before that, he was the son of a boss. See, Klaus was mistaken for his brother when he was out with Sarah, taken, and tortured for infomation they thought he would have--information he didn't have.

I think at that point, Klaus lost a hell of a lot more than just Sarah in those few days.

We got to see angry Klaus before--rude, bitter, sharp, and determined to hurt no matter what he had to use to do it. He liked to push buttons, and he really liked to piss his twin off. But here? In Red.?

We get to see Klaus from his own eyes. All he lost, how he came to the Den, and how it all comes to a head when he meets Reagan.

I think one of the most poignant moments for me in this book is when Reagan asks Klaus if he's single, and he's sort of pained for a moment before he replies, "Yes."

It was like that was the first time in years--so many years--that he'd really stopped to think for a moment about his status, and what it all meant.

You're not going to find a hero pining over a lost love in this book. He's already taken the time to do that, and he's killed each and every person he feels had a hand in what happened to him and Sarah. He's taken the time to grieve for her, in his own violent way, so I appreciate that he is already beyond that point.

Doesn't mean it's easy.

Boy needs to stop running.

Seriously, Red, stop that nonsense.

Some of my random thoughts while reading:

I want to cut Mish again.
I might hate Mish again.
Mish is his father's son. (I will say this til I die, London)
YAY BABY SACHA.
LUKA FOR THE WIN.
Luka is hurting people--I like when Luka hurts people.

I haven't talked much about Reagan, but she's pretty integral to Niklaus from the moment they meet. No, it's not instant love, but it's ... "Hey there."

She caught his attention in a time when he was trying to remind himself that he was human, not just a man-made weapon. And that was important. More than I can explain.

Reagan is Irish-American. She's a young girl just trying to get through life, frankly. Working her butt off, and not showing much for it. When Red steps into her diner one night, everything changes. He's not angry with her. He's less bitter. I think more than being human, she reminded him that sometimes he has to just be a man. Smile, put on the charm because no need to go killing everyone now, and put some effort into something you want.

That's what she did. And no matter how many times he went away, Klaus kept coming back. Until he finds Reagan in a bit of a situation with some Irish mob, and all the walls come down.

Some of the best lines in this book came from Luka, which really, that's not a surprise if you know Luka. *hugs him so hard*

“It’s been a while since I got shot so…”
and
“First, Im Albanian—different, yes?"

And Klaus can sometimes be ... *winks*, Klaus.

On the other hand, maybe it was just the way her ass looked in that skirt. Either way, he needed to get laid."

I'm going to close this rambling mess out by saying ... read the book. Get a look inside the head of a mercenary and how he got to be where he is. Thank London for the proper Epilogue, and just for Red. Demand Celt. Demand him now, fast, and proper.

And also ... Kingmaker, CODA ... It is much more than it appears.

Red. is to-the-point, and you can't stop reading until the end. Thank you, London, for giving him that voice.

"Do not fear death. Embrace it. Pain is inevitable, learn to love it."

description

The beginning of this book is a roller coaster. It's intense and painful. Then midway it starts to feel like a spin-off... because it is a spin-off. This book is about Mischa's twin brother, Niklaus.

You don't have to read the Volkov Bratva series to understand Red, but you'll probably enjoy it more if you did read the other books. I haven't read the other series, but after reading this, I had to put it in my agenda.

"Welcome to the Den, Red."

Niklaus lost everything because a group mistook him as his twin brother. He got out alive, but he swore to get revenge on everyone involved.

His mission takes years to complete. He doesn't have time for commitments or distractions. But one waitress becomes his weakness.

"He wanted to be free of the burdens that had always sat heavy on his shoulders, but he didn't know how."

It was only supposed to be one night. Maybe two. But the lines between Niklaus and Reagan get blurred. Even though their physical relationship is off and on, I love the couple because they have a deep understanding for each other. I can't wait to read the next book about Celt!

Phenomenal mafia writer, London Miller shocks and astounds in this intense heart gripping tale. One case of mistaken identity will leave you hanging on the edge of your seat, rapidly turning page after page to find out what happens next. Then when you think its safe, maybe go and get a refill of coffee...BAM!

I was completely devastated and heartbroken with Niklaus "Red" Volkov story. A man who endured more then he should have, was like a Phoenix rising out of the ashes, proving there is beauty in the breaking.

The story was good but I just didn't get the feels for the main characters.
There were also some points which disturbed the story for me one is for example that Liam seems to not know the connection from Reagan's familiy with the Flanagans - this seems kind of unbelievable. Also who just doesn't talk with their brothers anymore just because they were disowned by the alcoholic father.
Red or Niklaus on the other side is a little bit too hang up on his feels for his former girlfriend...
All in all in was well written and I hope the next one in the series has more loveable characters for me :)

After devouring all of Miller's books in the Volkov Bratva series, the release of Red couldn't have come at a better time. Hello, darkness! Who knew the bad twin could be so good?

 photo drake-10.w529.h352_zpss3s2rhpi.gif

This book is a spin-off from the Volkov Bratva series and what I love best about London's writing is that she doesn't just tell you the the story--she shows it to you. Vividly, and with surround-sound! I feel like I'm in the middle of watching a movie when I pick up her books and my only complaint is that this book was over too soon!

 photo image_zpsrorfhs1e.jpeg

Niklaus "Red" Volkov was originally introduced in the Bratva series, bristling with mystery, danger, and rage. In Red, he learns to love and trust again, slowly surrendering his feelings and becoming captivated by a young waitress, Reagan O'Callahan. They meet during a tumultuous time in Volkov's life, spend a few amazing nights together, and then Niklaus disappears without a trace. His life is devoted to the kill, vendettas and vows he's sworn to follow through with, neither giving place to romance on any level. Reagan isn't the kind of girl who sits around pining for a man who made a few appearances in her life, ditching her, only to suddenly reappear at his convenience. Instead, she continues on with her life, building her dreams, though still unable to forget the mysterious stranger who held a piece of her heart. Their story spans years, layered with old hurts, lost hopes, and new beginnings. When Niklaus does emerge again, Reagan finds herself in the middle of a feud between Irish mobsters and she fears that her brother's safety is greatly compromised. Red's timing is perfect, though. All of his skeletons come out of the closet and Reagan finally realizes that she knew nothing about this man to begin with.

I loved getting my little doses of Mish and Luka, but it wasn't enough! I was expecting more action and more drama in this book, but I was content. We also get another small glimpse of the other Den mercs, though Celt is more heavily featured in this book. There's also a beautiful epilogue and a tiny, peek-a-boo blurb from the Kingmaker. At least, I think so?? Hmmmm, I guess we'll find out in the next book whose POV that was. Yes, I am fanning myself over LM's growing book catalog! Can't wait for Celt's juicy story to be released next! I hope he's messy and dramatic like Mish! *naughty smirk* Bring on the Irishman!

I'm unsure how to even start this review other than to say that it wasn't my cup of tea.

The story in the beginning was difficult to follow. I felt like it was too much background, with too little detail, shoved in to too few pages. Let me specify that I have read no other of London Miller's books. When I finally did look up this book, when I was 30% into it, apparently this book is for a spin-off character. Had I known that, I might have read at least one of the previous books in the series. Without that background information, I felt like I was drowning in characters I had no information on and I was already supposed to care about. However, I just...didn't.

That being said, if you've read London Miller's other series and enjoyed them, you'll really like this one. The talent is there, the writing is there. I can tell that I might have liked this HAD it not been claimed as a standalone, but rather one of a series. There were parts and aspects of this book I really enjoyed. I actually really loved the last 25% of the book. I felt connected, finally, to Niklaus and Reagan. We finally got glimpses of them and not all of the nefarious dealings of Niklaus that seemed to muddle the story for me.

Overall, I would give this 2-2.5 stars because of the struggle to figure out the characters and story. That being said, if you've enjoyed her previous works, don't hesitate to pick this one up as well. No doubt you'll be swept away by The Den!

This begins a spinoff from the author's Volkov Bratva In the Beginning (Volkov Bratva, #1) by London Miller series. Nicklaus is a man who lives in the shadows, trying to sort out his damaged past. Reagan is the beautiful waitress he can't get out of his head.

I liked but didn't love this one. My expectations might have been too high, due to my love of the other books. That said it's a decent start to a new-to-me series, and will continue with it. Niklaus' origin story is fully explored here, so those new to this world won't need to read the other books to catch up.

Wow! What a great start to this brand new series.

The story has amazing characters as they were all so love-able and intriguing and the plot was filled with tons of drama, romance and suspense. One thing we love about a story like this is all its moving parts and all the complications that arise from Mafia Crime Families warring between the families fighting for power right down to the assassins needing to do their jobs all among the craziness.

Regan and Red had amazing chemistry and we loved seeing a glimpse of what was below the surface of Red's armor when he sparingly chose to let us see it.We loved that Red was a completely different person around Regan and she him.

Regan we found her to be a care taker, one who puts family first, one who puts her own dreams on hold all because circumstances change, she was smart and clever, sexy and one who cares and forgives because she has such a big and generous heart.

I love Red and all his broken-ness not that we love anything that he has endured but, even though on the surface he seems unfeeling, distant, hard, scary he is capable of love and feelings because you just have to see him with his brother's son Sasha to see that there is hope that one day he will let go of the pain, bitterness, resentment and finally be free of his demons and fully open his heart up and allow himself to be happy once again and to be loved. My heart broke for this character for all that he endure at the hands of others. We also have to say that we first met Red/aka Nicklaus in Mischa & Laurens story and having done so we loved him even more this time around because we got to know what he was truly capable of and even though he will never forget what happened to him and those that played a part he was still able to carve out some sort of friendship/forgiveness with Luca and Mischa.

Luca is still one bad*as and we just loved him in this story and of course we loved seeing Mishca and Lauren once again as they are one of our favorite couples.

This was an awesome story for us and we can't wait to read the rest of the series. This author is still fairly new to us and we have to say we are so loving all her works.

I have been wanting to read London Miller's Den of Mercenaries series for so long and OMG was Red an amazing start to the series. I was so addicted to this book. Just one more chapter-itis struck after reading the first chapter and I found myself crashing in the early hours of the morning because I was so obsessed. Niklaus and Reagan were amazing. They were sexy and their story was so incredible to watch. I held my breath at certain points in the story.

Without giving away any spoilers just know that this series is a standalone but can be read after the Volkov series. I myself did not read that series (yet!) and was completely fine. I am now even more obsessed with going back after this series to see both Luka and Mishca's respective stories. I am now so addicted and jumping on to Celt's story! Bravo! 4.5 stars! ~Ratula

Red is the first book in the Den of Mercenaries series by London Miller. It's a spin off of the Volkov Bravta Series so if you have not read it I highly recommend you to do it before starting this one. Don't make the same mistake as I did. Because even though I did not have any problem reading the book, there were some moments where I lost track of what was going on and it frustrated the hell out of me. So read the Volkov Bravta series first. I'm catching up with you soon Mish!

Back to business. Red, aka Niklaus *sighs* I LOVED the man. He endured a lot at the expense of someone who mistaken him for someone else. After almost experiencing his death , he was given the chance to avenge what was done to him. So he took it.
There are a lot going on in this book. Between Red's revenge, the mysterious identity of The Kingmaker, and Luka and the fact that Red allowed him to live, I was going a little crazy. Important bits of information was revealed in almost every chapter making impossible to put the book down.

Besides the moments when Niklaus was killing everything that moved, he also gave us some steamy encounters that had me fanning myself. This is when I introduce Reagan. She was a little easy as far as Niklaus was concerned but can you blame her? The man emanated a sexy and moody aura, so I forgave her for that. These Russians will be the death of me.

Red is a book packed with action and a lot of secrets. The story did not end on a cliffhanger but will still leave you hanging, because as I said before there was a lot going on. I can't wait to read Celt and see the way the author is going to put all this fuckery together.

Lily, one of my blog partners, has been after me awhile to read this series and boy am I glad I took her advice. This was a page-turner with lots of action, politics and full of twists and turns. I wish I had read Mishca and Lauren's story first though because there is some overlap and I felt like there were some holes I wanted filled in.

Overall a great read and I see some London Miller binge reading in my future.

This is the first book I have read by this author and I will read her again. I liked her writing and I liked this story. There are just some things that I didn't like and that's why I didn't give more stars. The book started out with a bang that is for sure!!!I loved loved loved Niklaus/Red/Klaus and I liked Reagan. I feel like I didn't get to know her that much. Also I wish there wasn't so much time in between them getting together. All and all good story!!!

I loved this book! I'm always a little hesitant when I start to read a spin off of a series I loved. There's a chance that the secondary characters that I thought I wanted to know about in the original series might not be as intriguing as I thought. That was definitely not the case with Red. London Miller does an excellent job with showing the reader what made Niklaus into Red. If you've read the Volkov Bratva series, then you know that Niklaus hates Mischa. You already know the torture Niklaus went through because he was mistaken for his brother. In Red you get to Niklaus's side of the pain he not only endured during his torture, but for many years after. You get a much better understanding of who Niklaus is, and why he became Klaus/Red.

I enjoyed reading about the romance between Niklaus and Reagan, but I'm glad it wasn't the main focus of the book. Red is more about Niklaus finally make peace with his past and being able to move forward with his life. Raegan was a good heroine. I loved her reactions when met Luka (still my favorite), Lauren and Mischa.

Red has been added to my 2016 five star read list. If you are a fan of the Volkov Bratva series, don't hesitate to start the Den of Mercenaries series.

I got seriously sucked in to Reds story. There could have been no romance to this story and I still would have devoured it because it was that good. But the HEA made it sweeter. I loved the world that was built. The secondary characters were awesome and now I wanna go back and read the other series.

This is a decent start to a series that I am vested in. Red from before is no longer and the now is just plain angry 😡 I mean at everything and everyone and well can we get a smidge if likability? I do understand why he is the way he is but it was exhausting. Also Reagan is not a pushover but she sure didn’t question much...

Nicklaus “Red” is tortured because of a case of mistaken identity. He joins the “den” as a means to retaliate against those that tortured him and killed the girl he loved.

I read this as a stand alone, I actually think it is a spin off from Volkov Bravata because of the overlapping characters. I am guessing that Nicklaus has already been introduced in that series so the he being mistaken for his twin storyline has already been introduced.

I didn’t find it hard to follow along with the characters not previously reading the series, so it wasn’t an issue for me. N was a likable H, he was damaged, but you could see the goodness underneath. Reagan the h was ok. Her character didn’t go very deep. She was portrayed as a hard worker. She was dedicated to a dysfunctional family, but we didn’t really hear much about them either. Their “love story” was based on meetings over a few years, but I just didn’t feel it. He was stuck holding back, running when they were too close, stating he couldn’t love her.. then boom he loves her.

It doesn’t end in a cliffhanger per se, but there is a bigger story that will continue through books. I suspect that Red will pop up again in the next books as well.

Overall, wasn’t a bad read, but not great either. I have no desire to continue the story.

So good

The beginning was way too graphic. So daunting; it was actually difficult to get through. But who could leave the evil twin all alone. All jokes aside, truly heartbreaking but I understand that it was necessary. Break your heart and build you back up again. It we already loved Klaus London! No need to pull tears dude.

#teamRaegan aka slapper. I swear she slapped everyone in Hell's Kitchen at least twice in their life. I'm starting to see a pattern. Do all your female leads like to slap their male counter parts? (Just the good-sorta-bad-guys... but never the actual bad guys? I wanted Raegan to kick Liam's ass. Or at least hand it to him. He was taken care of too easily for my liking). Actually, everything was taken care of too easily.

Hey folks, this does have a Happily Ever After

Did it feel short to anyone else? Another book by London Miller devoured in mere hours. Thank you for revisiting some of the greatest people on book-earth. Love hearing about Mishca, Lauren (and the smallest person in the room, baby Sasha) & my lover Luka.

Hey London, will there be another Christmas dinner from hell scene with the Russians and the Irish?

Volkov Mafia

I hate Mafia books. I really do but dang if this series about the family Volkov has grabbed my attention. I can't stop reading the bloody mess of them. But I digress. I am loving these psycho mafia killers with a passion. They torture, they kill and they love!! And I love them. Just crazy. Never would have thought that could happen. I hate Anne Stuart's anti-heroes but I like these guys. No accounting for taste. Lol. I will continue on to the next book and it's twisted sick journey. I can't recommend this to anyone though. It would probably hit every trigger out there except there is no other women mentioned in book. He is devoted to Reagan. And maybe that is why I liked him. There is separation several times too so be warned. I was and yet, here I am. Addicted!!!

Outstanding

London Miller has done it again. Two Thumbs Up and Five Stars. Red is everything I hoped I would be and more. I can't get enough of these books. You think you knew his story from the previous books. But that was just a teaser. Klaus's what can I say about him that won't give away anything about the story. We know he's demanding, moody, intelligent and sexy as HELL. Just like his brother Mishca. But we didn't know he has a soft spot for the people he Love's and care about. Reagan is his weakness. The one to calm his beasts inside and ignite his fury within if something was to happen to her. I look forward to reading more of this series and rereading this just as I have the others.

This is the first book I’ve read by London Miller herself; I was fascinated by the Seasons of betrayal se co-wrote with Bethany Kris so I decided to give it shot and when I read the blurb for Red I was very excited.

The book is presented as a standalone and I think that’s a huge mistake because not having read the Volkov Bratva trilogy before I found myself lost at times, I think reading it before would make easier to keep up with the story in this novel. While they were things I did enjoyed of the story I’m not convinced with the writing style, it lacked emotion in my opinion and I never truly felt the connection between the main couple.

I’ll give it a three stars because it was entertained but not exactly what I was expecting.

3.5-4 stars

While this is the first in a series, it would be extremely helpful if you've read London Miller's Volkov Bratva series (which I did NOT read). In here we get the story of Niklaus Volkov and his harrowing experience that leads to him becoming the man known as Red. My heart went out to him. But then, he's all of a sudden being friendly with his brother Mischa and Luka and I can only assume the reconciliation happened during Mischa's series. THEN, we get the ending and OH MY GOD!!! I'm itching to read more because I can only guess that we will see more of Red and Kingmaker's underlying plan.

*Thanks to IndieSage PR for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

I read this all in one sitting, I just love this author and I have been waiting for Red's story to be told. I loved how Regan just seemed to fit him so perfectly. The storyline is out of this world it keeps you on the edge that you have to keep reading because putting the book down is just unacceptable at this point. The mafia action is intense as well as the love scences. I loved Mischa but Niklaus has a stolen a part for himself as well.
