Providence Paranormal College #2

Fangs for the Memories

Rate this book
Memory is a tricky business.

No one remembers Maddie May. That’s fine with her; just a side effect of Umbral magic. Unfortunately, she has to take the Magic Theory Lab at Providence Paranormal College. Maddie won’t pass if the Professor can’t remember her.

Henry Baxter’s a psychic vampire who can store total recall for himself and others. He’s been in business since 1986, but new regulations mean he needs a degree to keep operating. Going back to college after sixty years on earth is definitely a drag, especially since society treats vampires as second-class citizens.

The woman everyone forgets and the man who remembers everything seem a natural pair. While Maddie’s all for it, Henry keeps pushing her away. But what if the only way they’ll survive is together?

Fangs for the memories is a full-length novel with no cheating and a happy ending for the couple. But the identity of the school saboteur remains a mystery!

Return to Providence Paranormal College in this full-length novel. Extrahumans of all types abound on this urban campus on the East Side of Providence, Rhode Island. This Ivy-League college recently opened its doors to anyone with enough talent. The Admissions Department at PPC enrolls humans with extraordinary grades, the magically and psychically inclined, vampires, werewolves, changelings, and even magic shifters like dragons and Kelpies. Come take a tour! If you like YA and NA Paranormal Romance or Urban Fantasy with strong romantic subplots, you’ll feel right at home here.

Psychic vampire Henry was hired to make a memory amulet for umbral witch Maddie May because as umbral affinity, she blends with the shadows and no one remembers her, not even her roommate Lynn. But she needs to be remembered, to pass the course she’s taking. As a psychic, Henry remembers Maddie without the amulet, and she finds she likes being remembered and she likes Henry. But Henry has had to deal with a lot of animosity and prejudice since becoming a vampire and no one should be tied to a vampire if they don’t have to be. But they don’t have a choice when paranormal shadow and seelie creatures start attacking them, wreaking havoc on campus. The group of PPC students band together to support Maddie and stand strong and find the culprit behind the attacks.

I loved Bearly Awake, the first book in this series. I thought Bobbie was adorable, especially when sleepy, and Lynn was a good contrast to him. And I thought the campus felt fascinating in its retro-ness. It felt like something out of the 1960s. That 1960s vibe is still strong in this story, and even more so with Henry feeling like an old private eye from the 40s awkwardly trying to fit into the current period. This book stars Maddie, Lynn’s roommate, who we saw briefly in Bearly Awake. She is a fascinating character with being umbral affinity, people forget her as soon as they look away, making her character lonely, tragic, and determined who is accepting of not being remembered, but still doesn’t want to be forgotten. I liked her romance with Henry, which focused more on his old-fashioned-ness and less on his being a vampire. I didn’t like this book quite as much as the first mainly because this story felt like it got swamped in magical details and innerworkings of the magical system, trying to establish the foundations of the rest of the book series. The talk about complicated affinities reminded me a lot of Sarina Dorie’s Womby’s Wayward Witches series. It felt like it was trying to cram in way too much, spending so much time on the seelie and unseelie turf war and who was on which side (cliché and I’m not looking forward to the books dealing with that). And it spent a lot of time blatantly trying to introduce all of the other characters/creatures who would be starring in later books. On one side it was taking away time that should have been spend on Maddie and Henry and way overcomplicating things (and tying up some strings just by pure the author pulling a card out of a hat and sending them in a direction which felt like cutting corners and didn’t actually tie together -like when they went to question the professor), but on the other hand, it does have me intrigued in checking out the other books. For instance, I hate wolf shifters, and especially alphas, but I did feel like I got to know Josh enough that he pops out of the mold and could potentially be an interesting character in the next book (just hope he kicks the smoking habit before I pick up the book though). I’m eager to find out more about that genie lamp, which is in one of the future books. But I checked through all of the books, and it’s making me beyond sad that Olivia, the owl shifter, doesn’t have her own book. Honestly, I had never heard of Trogdor before picking up this book. When they kept calling Blaine that, I figured it was his last name, until I heard otherwise. I ended up having to Google it since there was no explanation for why they were calling him that in the book.

I am becoming quite addicted to this series with this second book. I love the way a disparate group of characters are drawn together, and each book develops a romance between one couple. I specially love the use of the titles - it's not just a clever little pun but a statement of the nature of the problem to be tackled in the book. Very, very cleverly thought out.

The romance isn't the main point, but rather a major life problem is faced by each of the two characters, and with the resolution of the romance plot, so both problems are also resolved - it's masterful plotting, and supported by very disciplined writing. Really great work, and what's more to the point from a reader's perspective, a thoroughly enjoyable read.

The adventure continues. I definitely recommend reading this book 📖.. All the characters are back and still trying to figure out what's going on even though the mystery person is after Henry and Maddie everyone does their part to keep them safe

This is a great follow up to Bearly Awake. The tone is light and the characters are funny. Henry and Maddie's relationship is so sweet. There's some great social commentary here, too. This is working up to be a fantastic series.

D.R. Perry does it once again with Fangs for the Memories. I don't normally enjoy series that switch main characters with each book, but I love getting to know each of the main characters in this series. I can't wait to start book 3.

Whether you choose to read it as a stand alone book or as part of the series, it remains equally enjoyable.

The two main characters from Book 1 are shuffled into the back, appearing the least of any of the supporting cast and essentially appearing just enough to remind you they still exist. The rest of the supporting cast form book 1 is there as well but they all get a bit of development with two of them being promoted to main character status for this outing. We also get a couple of new additions to the cast.

Despite being a novella, we get quite a lot out of it, with the series' world history getting a great deal of development thanks to one of the two new main characters having lived a lot longer than the rest and his knowledge is a key component of the plot.

The book retains the same light feel to it as Book 1 did but also feels more grounded with a great deal of insight into how everyday people in town regard the paranormal folks.

***THIS BOOK WAS PROVIDED BY THE PUBLISHER/AUTHOR IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW**

Fangs For The Memories is the second installment of D. R. Perry's Providence Paranormal College.

Something scary is happening at Providence Paranormal College. There have been attacks, and a small group of the students is investigating. But it seems that with each attack foiled, the perpetrator has a new target.

Although this book is a continuation of a series, and characters repeat, it is possible to read alone; however, it was really enjoyable reading them in order.

I cannot wait to see what other mischief this motley group of paranormal students get involved in.

I received this book for free from a random drawing.

The gang is back as our vampire psychic Henry helps out Lynn's roommate, Maddie with a charm so that her professor can remember her. However, after the attack against Bobby was foiled, our mysterious nemesis has turned towards Henry (probably because he helped Bobby with the charm last book).

Just like in the first book, the romance is a slow give-and-take (perhaps a bit slower as we learn more about the rules and politics in the supernatural world, especially concerning vampires) and the nerdy references are afoot. Also like the first book, I finished this in a ridiculously short amount of time. DR Perry is a master of cozy rom-com books and I'm ecstatic to see what happens to our crew next!

What can I say? I love DR Perry's paranormal romance! They're light and airy, a gentle reminder that, though there is far more to this world than we know, there is always romance. I'm not gobbling this series up because I want it to last.
DR Perry's books are a great respite when you read a lot of darker, dystopian fiction. They aren't too dark and they aren't too sweet, just right and the characters are believable, loveable, and unique.
A definite must read for anyone who loves a variety of paranormal beings in their books.

D.R. Perry has done it again!

This second installment in the series follows Maddie, a college student who needs to be remembered to pass her exams and Henry the local vampire. The romance is again well written and not over-the-top or too good to be true.

The main comment I have is that although you can read these books as stand alone novels, they are much more enjoyable as a series. Start with book one and work your way through!

I look forward to all future installments.

Ok

Not very easy characters to like or get into, just vanilla overall in that department. Plot felt slow, and uninspired. Just was not my cup of tea.

Cute

The story was cute. The only thing was that i had to look up what some of the magical creatures were. It made it hard to follow in some points.

4 Biologically, We Don't Have To Blink Stars

Fangs for the Memories is the second book in the Providence Paranormal College series by D. R. Perry.

This book was so much more than the first. Having more time to understand the backstory of each of the leading pair worked wonders on building the story up. Maddie May finally found someone to remember her. Henry Baxter was led safely into light, protected by her Umbral darkness.

Baxter is more of a kind hearted fellow than he gave himself credit for. The only vampire we've truly met in this series, and one who's never leaned towards the darker side of his undead condition. That he has worked with memory charms since before his tragic turning, was the linchpin in his and Maggie's fated match. While Maggie grew up with a vampiric father and a precog for a mother, making her ridiculously perfect for this one lonely vampire. Her blight, and that of every Umbral Magus is being remembered. Within her family alone she's lost someone because no one could remember her to save her life. A circumstance Henry faced during the same tragedy that saw him turned, and an Umbral friend die.

We also stepped a little onto the path of discovering who, or what, is behind the attacks on PPC. An Extramagus with a least a bit of summoning magic. That may tie into someone from Henry's past. I'm most concerned about who taught Henry his memory abilities, since he seems to have compelled himself to forget, and why he would do such a thing? His past seems inextricably tied into the convoluted web this antagonist weaves, given his connection to Headmistress Henrietta Thurton. I wonder if her husband has anything to do with these attacks, given his bigotry?

A fun, quick read. This second entre into D.R. Perry's world was more entertaining than the first: remember, I went into this series cold, with nothing but a quick glance at the summary to go on in the beginning.

My first impression — kind of a “Buffy and the original gang go to college...without the slaying and everyone has abilities but are more angsty about grades than they are about their own "special skills”” kinda vibe — was definitely strengthened by this book, but I have to add to it a little bit of that Sweet Valley High series thang. (I never read the SVH books, but I’ve seen them around enough to create a friendly mental impression of them. I get a definite “girl meets boy — or vice versa — stumbles through initial atraction angst until first kiss when, suddenly, all is right with the universe and everyone lives happily ever after” impression from the series and we’ve got a bit of that going on here, too.)

The interesting trend about these books appears to be the lack of romantic angst. There is no doubt these lead characters are going to get together and stay together: it’s a forgone conclusion. Normally that predictabilty would irritate me a little, but in this case, that formula is what allows the meta-plot to move forward.

Did I mention the meta-plot? Ah, yes, there is one. And we only get hints of it here at the beginning.

Like I said: fun. And it left me ready for Book 3.

Full disclosure: I read this book as a part of the ARC review of the new collection Providence Paranormal College Books 1 - 5. I received a free copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.

How unusual! Instead of having one small set of characters throughout a series, this series is featuring a small set of characters in yet a much bigger set of characters and featuring each smaller set with a book of their own. Oh, I know it is done, but I have not yet been exposed to it. I am very impressed with this book and the series. The main characters are very likeable, endearing, once you get to know them, and quite believable. The plot is easily followed. I can easily recommend this book and this series of books to anyone who enjoys paranormal stories.

Another romance, another conspiracy

The group of friends is growing, and coincidence is changing. I’m enjoying the lighter times to counteract the darkness of the central plot, and also that it’s taking time to learn exactly what it is they are facing. An enjoyable series.

College isn't boring.

When I earned my degree I swore I would never go back to college. This series is worth it. Perry captures college life, distills it through a paranormal filter and I am eating it up! Great plot pacing. The characters are coming alive.

Excellent characters, lots of fun, and some very interesting Paranormals. Two students are polar opposites except for a common enemy. Lighthearted and a quick read really made my day!

Careening

The plot staggers madly down the street with whatever snark or bit of myth happens to strike the fancy. Most of the characters are forgettable, defined by little more than a singular trait. Repetitive and sloppy.

I liked this more than the first book. The jokes were not overdone as they felt in the prior book. I don't think I've ever read a series like this where the main characters change from book to book. It's an interesting way to learn more about characters you already are familiar with. My only issue with the book is that the characters don't turn to help when their lives are at stake (pun intended) as soon as they have the chance and worse, when they do ask for help they ask peers instead of police. A lot of other authors do this too, like JK Rowling. If the characters had some type of electrical interference with their phones it would have made for a good excuse to not reach out until communication lines were restored.
