Calle Jaye is fun, playful, ironic, professional and sophisticated. She’s super-educated in the field of fiction and would spend most of her time walking around in “Book World” (or”eBook World”).
Does she have slight control freak tendencies? Yep. Why else would she chose to self-publish?
In her day job she gets to read romance novels. In her night job she gets to write them!
Her favorite color is bold purple. She likes rock like Kid Rock, Shinedown, and Nickelback. Add in a bit of Anastacia and Adelle, too.
She collects rocks. Watches crime dramas. Abhors Lifetime Movies and Titanic (especially Leo…) and refuses to read or write about sparkly teen vampires.
She’s married to a cop she strongly suspects is a vampire. They’ve made vampire babies, too.
They live in Indiana with their vampire relatives and their vampire dogs.
"Gathering," introduces the reader to many new characters and a new offshoot of PAVAD: REYS. Ken Chalmers and Paige return in this new, and unexpected, offshoot. Meanwhile , we meet new characters and follow an engaging storyline that brings together team members from CCU and REYS to solve a cold case of one of the REYS team members.
The novel was a little slow, at times, but not enough that the reader remained engaged throughout. The unexpected change of a new team branch and almost all new characters was a bit off putting, at first. The author did a good job of bringing the two branches of PAVAD together to help solve a cold case of one missing person to a much larger and broader case.
I feel like this was the weakest of all the books so far. There were lots of grammatical and wording errors; a persons name could be spelled different 3 times on a page. Half the book seemed to be setting up for the next. I also didn’t love how suddenly there was a new division, new people (lots of new people), and how things got jumbled with no explanation. Things are repetitive at this point and it is getting old. It is always either someone within PAVAD, or a personal case. Finally, there is no consistency when using last and first names (or who changes their names when married). With the new characters, switching between first and last name gets confusing. Final note, I noticed they had all the females change their names once they got married (even those with their doctorates), but Merrick Cody for a name change; just odd.
Growing up in an abusive home and an ever more abusive town, PAVAD agent, Leina Howell could only ever depend on her twin brother, Lance. When he disappeared she left all alone and heartbroken. For fifteen years, she's wondered what happened that day and where her brother is - because she doesn't believe he ran away on his own - not without telling her.
When she receives an anonymous letter with photos of a man she believes is Lance, she returns to the town of Evalyn determined to uncover the truth, only to be mugged within days of her arrival. Luckily her team has her back and they send PAVAD Complex Crimes Unit Team Three leader, Ken Chalmers to keep her safe.
With the eleventh book in the series, I've mostly given up on remembering who's who in this. The backstories are very complex and adding time between reads, I've got very little hope of remembering the details. That said, this was good. I liked Leina and Ken. I do vaguely remember Ken from earlier books, although I can't say the same about Leina. At the start she was a bit timid but I liked that she came out of her shell more and more as she was provided with the support system she needed to face her past.
The romance was sweet, with Ken acting as her protector more often than not. But I appreciated that he respected her and helped her to stand on her own two feet. Their relationship unfolded a smidge more organically than they sometimes do with romance, but the pacing worked well and I thought they were good for each other. I was less pleased with the ending and the arrival of an It ruined it for me. I did like Ken's sister though. We never meet her but I appreciate her humour.
As for the plot, it kept me reading to find out what was going on and who was guilty. I totally thought it was the Not everything was wrapped up though and I still have questions about what happened.
Still, another enjoyable addition to the series. 3.5 stars, rounded to 3 stars.
I liked this series even though some of them are older and expensive to buy. This one though felt like a filler in. It introduced a lot of new characters with only Paige a previous main character and Ken and Cam mentioned. This focused on Ken and Leina and a new team within PAVAD. Leina travels to her home town to investigate a missing person important to her. Ken soon joins her after she's attacked. For being so expensive it had quite a few spelling errors which it shouldn't have had. The story is ok and I hovered between three and four stars but I felt it could have been a lot more as it has a good plot.
Great story! All the stories in this series are stand alones , but there are some common threads that are found in each story. These are dedicated men and women who believe in good and evil. This is one that is a doozy! No spoilers - read it and you will understand what I mean!! I can hardly wait to the next one!
I continue to love the PAVAD agents. However, this was the first book where so many errors made it hard to read at times. Missing it incorrect words changed entire sentences and required a bit of deciphering at times.
I liked the story itself, but the grammatical errors in the book were very distracting. I had a hard time staying focused on the story because I was rereading things to figure out what the correct words were supposed to be pretty regularly.
After two duds, this one was actually pretty good. The characters were much better, the plot line wasn't as recycled as other books in this series, and it felt like a smoother read.
3½⭐! Great book in this series. I will be sad when I'm done with the series. This is, to ne, somewhere between Cozy and Hard Core Mystery. Suiting my current reading needs of not too heavy and complicated a book, but still worth reading.
As I say every time I review a book in this series, I completely am hooked by the characters and the storylines are always interesting, but the editing is so bad. There are lots of typos and misused words. In a freebie, I would be more willing to overlook it, but I don't like paying for a badly edited book. In all honesty, the editing issues have plagued every book in this series, yet I do keep buying them. The characters are that interesting to me. I just wish the author would send me a copy to beta read. I would happily edit.
a pavad agent returns to her small hometown full of hated memories and persecution to find the truth of her missing brothers absence. did he leave or was he abducted? someone sends her his picture. she is then attacked and a colleague rides to the rescue. slowly the lies are uncovered . kidnappings, human trafficking, bogus churches turn into cults. tragedy strikes but there is a happy ending for our heroes. re-read August, 2016
I love Ms. Brooks PAVAD series. I have read them all and I am looking forward to the next book. I just hate the fact that I have to wait a few months. I will probably start reading book 1 again. I recommend to all. Well written, great characters, and no repeating story line. These books don't continually repeat phrases and word like Lynda Chance and Kristen Ashley. I've read all of their books too.
