Lucas Dougherty pretty much has everything money can buy, including all the one-night stands a guy in his mid twenties could ever want, but it’s not what he wants, at least, not anymore. On his birthday, Lucas reflects on his past and realizes he wants more. He wants someone to see him, not his money. He wants a guy to share his life with. He wants a family. He wants love. Only he’s never been good with relationships. As a matter of fact, he destroys them. All the men in his family do.

Jordan Quinn knew he liked boys from a young age. He was fortunate that his parents loved him for who he was and were in fact very supportive of him, but that didn’t alleviate the hidden fear that settled deep within him as he grew older. Being gay was hard enough at times, but knowing he was different from the other boys, Jordan chose to keep his distance in order to protect himself. Born with a rare, intersex condition that left him scarred physically and emotionally, Jordan’s spent the last nine years avoiding romantic relationships while focusing on his career and helping foster kids in order to bury his personal issues. That includes never even allowing himself a single date, because he’s convinced no man will ever be able to love and accept him as he is.

A change in routine lands Lucas and Jordan in the same café at the same time and leads to a subsequent “non-date” where they both find themselves drawn to each other in ways neither imagined. They both laugh off Jordan’s refusal to give in to Lucas’ ongoing requests for a date until an unexpected, ill-timed kiss threatens to end their relationship before it’s even started.

Lucas breaks every relationship he touches. Jordan is broken in ways no one can ever fix. Perhaps, with patience, love, and a significant amount of trust, they can repair the damaged pieces in each other and come out whole on the other side.

Broken is the second book in the Troubled Hearts Series. While it does feature minor references to the first book, Stay, it can be read as a stand-alone novel or part of the series.

Savannah Brooks spends her days as a reporting analyst, which is extremely difficult when her imaginary friends are constantly pestering her to come out and play. One of these days, she plans to leave the world of numbers and spreadsheets behind in order to write full-time but for now, late evenings and weekends with the voices in her head will have to do. Even then, her attempts to play in her fictional worlds are often thwarted by her husband, son, or daughter dragging her back to reality.

Aside from reading and writing, Savannah loves video games, football, superhero movies, dragons, coffee, dark chocolate, and all things Disney. She dreams of having a castle on the water, be it ocean cliffs or a mountain lake, and traveling to historic places around the world.

Savannah currently lives in Arizona with her very supportive husband, two children, and ghost dog (the family beagle who passed away a couple years ago, but whose spirit is kept very much alive by her son and daughter).

Ok

I quite enjoyed Jordan but Lucas...well, he seemed really pushy and stalkerish. Like how many times does a guy have to say no before you back the F off? He seemed not to care for Jordan's boundaries ex the first night he slept over and it went sideways and then to think he could just go down on him while he was alseep! Um, he had a difficult time with you even touching him intimately just a few hours before. It's called consent, look it up.

Jordan and Lucas come from different backgrounds and upbringings. Learning to trust in the love they have for each other is a work in progress. Having a young girl in foster care pull them even closer together is a blessing in disguise. Drawing from strengths they didn't know they had.

Eh... maybe more like a 3.5. I really did enjoy the premise and the storyline, but the actual telling of it was so much more tell than show that it wasn't nearly as engaging as I'd hoped for. I'll pass on diving deeper into this author's work for now.

Super sweet!

Lucas and Jordan’s story was really sweet. I liked how Lucas worked hard to be different than his family and how much he loved Jordan. My heart hurt for Madison but she got her HEA and it was beautiful. Lovely story.

Sometimes love is found in the last place you expect to find it.

Even when you struggle with understanding the nuances of verbal and body language, the underlying fear developed from life experiences and phobias, and the unsupported mix of emotions felt and reflected between acquaintances as they transition to friends, lovers, and and even married spouses with expanding families.

Struggling thru life is never clear or easy. Love clouds our minds and tangles our words even as we seek true love and offer everything we possess to celebrate our oneness of togetherness and uniqueness. Unity entwines the creativity, respect, and forgiveness of each into a strong bond for life as long as honesty with each other remains. The joy of love enables flexibility to always put the other first. This allows love to overcome all problems and negativity through growth and demonstrated caring.

Not allowing the feelings expressed by family and friends made Lucas and Jordan become better with and for each other, and those they helped. Those who rejected their love were doomed to continuing to put others down, and destroying their own chances at love, forever.

Although it seems like many love stories in current and past books is aided by money and exceptional family and friends, this allows the author to concentrate on the emotional component to make the apparent fairy tale achieve reality, without warping the joy with despondency over money issues. This book was a step up from the first book in the series, and tied some issues into the plot to strengthen the message.

Another One

This was a great follow-up to the first book. When we met Lucas in book 1 wasn't sure how I felt about him or understood how he could walk away from Ash. But in Broken we get to see Lucas and learn more about his strength, weaknesses and his character. Jordan is a sweetheart. I enjoyed this book. Great job Savannah.

Wonderfully sweet story! Between the fact that I disliked Lucas in book #1 and the instalove I was unsure in the beginning. However, I couldn't help but love Jordan and feel for Lucas. This story is all about facing our insecurities and our faults and learning to trust. Ms Brooks did a superb job of keeping them believable and lovable. I highly recommend this to my friends.

3.5*
Liked the first half better than the last, but still enjoyable. The delicate subjects were dealt with enough delicacy and sensitivity.
