At the age of four, Ahmed I. Nasser’s parents decided that the best way to keep a hyperactive child occupied was to teach him how to read and constantly bombard him with books. Since then, the world of imagination has constantly consumed him. He quickly decided that the only way to feel fulfilled was to spend his time writing one story after the other, even opting out of a career as a pediatrician, despite ten years of struggling through med-school.
Influenced by Stephen King, Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, he has been writing since the age of 12 while travelling the world with his family. Now, finally settled in Egypt, he divides his time between teaching Middle School English Literature and finding the best ways to scare his family and friends.
Book 2 of the Slaughter series, picks up in Shadow's Embrace, after six months of the town being able to relax. Then all hell breaks loose. Debra Adam's mother is now head of the council and Debra is distancing herself from her mother. The search for Alan Carter to find his sister continues. He is somehow connected to both sides and it plagues him.
The story is wonderfully scary. The dead skin, rotting breath, and boney hands make a new appearance and are creepy as can be.
This is another excellent portion of the story of the people in Melington.
I listened to this book in Audiobook format and I have to say, with Jake Urry's voice, it is a great choice. Jake's voices capture American accents, women, old, and young. It is amazing that he can individualize his voice as he does.
If you like eerie stories about what happens to the missing children, then this is a wonderful series to read, or listen to. It is a great story.
With a bonus of the next book teaser, I know I am hooked. Can't wait to read more from A. I. Nasser.
Shadow's Embrace is the second book in the Slaughter series and picks up six months after Children To The Slaughter. They should really be read in order though there are some flashbacks that explain parts of the past. Alan Carter is still plagued by nightmares from the events six months ago, and while there is a new chairperson of the Council, children are still disappearing. However, when more people find out about what is going on in the little town of Melington and an inquisitive reporter becomes involved, total mayhem ensues, and Alan seems to be the key as "It began with a Carter, and it must end with a Carter". A.I. Nasser introduces new characters and further develops the characters from book 1. The pace remains fast and the atmosphere is wonderfully creepy and suspenseful. I enjoyed this one more than the previous book as the writing has become more refined. Jake Urry is the perfect narrator for this series, as he boosts the eeriness factor with his spine-chilling delivery. I look forward to Copper's Keeper. I received a complimentary copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
Review: SHADOW' S EMBRACE by A. I. Nasser (Slaughter Series Book 2)
A. I. Nasser is a talented writer delivering a seriously kickin' series in the Slaughter Series. The quiet historic Connecticut community of Melington is discovering the ugly consequences of cancelling the blood bindings contracted with long-deceased Copper Tibet. Meanwhile, the Council is in uproar, and Alan Carter undergoes nearly unspeakable torments to rediscover and recover his younger sister, abducted by Copper Tibet two decades ago.
Alan did not give Copper what was rightfully his and now the blood binding is broken. Copper is free to take whomever he chooses. Alan Carter is still determined to find his sister, Kathrine, and put an end to what Copper Tibet is doing to the town of Melington.
I agree with a few other reviewers saying that there are characters who did not get enough story and while others were pointless and I didn't quite understand them. There are a few minor typos in the e-book; however, this did not deter me from continuing the book nor did it affect my rating. I do know there are many people who just cannot overlook such things, though. Overall, I enjoyed the second installment as much as I enjoyed the first. I do plan on finishing the trilogy. I am anxious to see what happens with Alan and Copper.
I enjoyed the book, but not as much as the first. Some characters weren't useful to the story, while other characters weren't given the same amount of story as they could. Still a good book, I hope the next book ties up the first book in the series which was amazing.
Pretty good book. Unlike others, I don't find it necessary to write sentences and paragraphs that are actually in a book. I'm not great with writing reviews, but I'm pleased with some of the outcomes, but saddened with others. Now someone needs to take that woman sheriff out.
After the fast paced creepiness of book 1, I wondered what was next. This book picks up 6 months after the end of book 1 and, to start with is a bit more sedate. The same principle is applied in flashbacks, filling in gaps between tine frames to good effect, however, I felt that some parts of the previous book were unnecessarily repeated in the first few chapters. The introduction of a reporter causes a massive stir (no spoilers) and things pick up pace quite dramatically. I also liked the way that there were new ways for the rotten corpse to appear and freak people out. There is a much more human aspect involved to book 2, dealing more with how multiple characters are coping with the aftermath of events (both past and present). The bonus chapter at the end of book 1 was good, the bonus chapter at the end of this book is superb and a nice touch that I have only really seen from Scare Street.
I wish I was better at reviews as I don't feel that I do the authors justice, even now I'm wavering between 4/5 stars - the repetition of book 1 though just knocked it down. Bring on book 3....
Shadow's Embrace is the perfect second book in this series written by A. I. Nasser. After the first book things were in limbo and the author picked it up beautifully in the second book. Things definitely changed, but the nightmare continues! Alan is now into the thick of things and is trying to figure out how to save is sister. The plot of the book is well developed with some nice developed twists that lead you astray. The pace is just right. The author never rushes you through the story nor does he drag it out.
Alan is a very likable character who you can relate to. He will stop at nothing to try and save his sister. He is slowly but surely getting to the bottom of things, and it is not pretty, that is for sure. He has some help but even more people who fight against him, trying to make it as difficult as possible.
I really enjoy reading this series and can't wait to see what happens next!
Alan is plagued by nightmares, trying to figure out what happened, and is still happening in his hometown. Many children have gone missing over the years, and while the police say they are investigating, the missing children are never found.
Great read, and interesting view of the small town intricacies that can build up.
Not too much from Scarestreet Novels to dislike! All the authors are a bit different in style, but all immensely talented at storytelling the creepy! Nasser ranks high on my scale! Can't wait to read Copper's Keeper!
I was lucky enough to have gotten a free audio book code from the author. I am volunteering to leave this review. Awesome audio book plenty of twist and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Can not wait for the next book.
Not as invested in this one as I was the first. This book left me quite disappointed after the surprising stories in the first, here's to hoping the third and final is better.
(Format : Audiobook) ""Some things, once heard, can never be forgotten."" Melington has grown prosperous and has encouraged new families to settle in it's seemingly friendly and safe environment. But the town holds a dark secret, once known only to the councillors and sheriff, which is about to be discovered, now that Adam Carter has emerged from his six month long coma and a hack reporter has arrived in town. Looking for a story about missing children. This is a dark and creepy tale which is best heard with all the lights blazing and which will cause the reader/listener to glance askance at the puddle of darkness under the bed. There is always a trap door... There are monsters out there but they can also be the people we know and trust. The careful presentation of this book by Jake Urry is a perfect foil to the story. His slightly gravelly voice allows the tale to tell itself whilst imbuing it with an undertone of horror - an excellent narration. I received a complementary copy of Shadow's Embrace in order that I might give an unbiased review. As this is the second book in the Slaughter series and I had not heard or read the first, I found it initially slightly confusing and definitely missed certain character nuances. It did, however, hold it's own as a stand alone but would have been enhanced, I am sure, if read in sequence
The story of book 1 - Children to the Slaughter - continues in book 2, so this book is not a standalone!
In book 2 we are getting answers to the questions and mystery from book 1. It starts very calm with revealing more of the secrets and the conspiracy of the founding families in Mellington. The story line continues 6 months later, but keeps going 6 months back in time. The story gets even more creepy, shocking and suspenseful! It also has a heartbreaking element to it this time, when we (and Alan) hear his sister call for him.
The characters and story get even more depth now. You'll probably feel ambivalent when it comes to the characters and their agenda. I get why the founding families are feeding the monster, but that doesn't make it less creepy!
The author did a brilliant job with this story line and it's very vivid and imaginable. The line 'It began with a Carter and must end with a Carter' kept me on the egde the whole time!
Jake Urry does an amazing job again with this book - his different voices, tones and accents are brilliant. I haven't yet listened to a book narrated by Jake, that wasn't good. I believe, he can make any story come to life.
*This book was gifted to me in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this 2nd book in the series. Jake Urry is a wonderful narrator. Kids are still dissappearing in Melington, even with a new mayor. The corruption runs deep and the evil may never be vanquished.“I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher
Loving the series. Scary and intense from the very beginning. Couldn't put it down until it was finished. If you like scary stories try this one. Very original story.
