About the author

Alex is the author of The Ghost Cat, a bestseller in the UK and USA. Also a theatre professional and social media influencer, his TikTok page @housedoctoralex has nearly 300,000 followers while his work on Capital Theatres’ dementia programme helped it receive a UK Theatres Excellence in Inclusivity Award in 2023.

Alex loves helping writers of all backgrounds craft language into beautiful prose and verse. A PhD graduate of English, his first book Library Cat owes its existence to a bout of procrastination while studying at the University of Edinburgh, going on to win the People’s Book Prize in 2017. He also writes poetry and has been published in New Writing Scotland, Gutter and The London Magazine, while his fiction has been translated into nine languages. A recovering academic, his monograph Larkin’s Travelling Spirit was published in 2021.

Somehow, Alex manages to split his time effectively between writing, delivering literary events and working at Capital Theatres, Edinburgh. When he has a spare moment (rarely!) he enjoys renovating his Edwardian flat, uncovering its hidden secrets with his cat Tabitha, son Sasha and wife, Ellie. He is currently working on a new novel The Ship’s Cat, scheduled for publication in Spring 2026.

Questo è uno di quei libri, ormai sempre più numerosi, che a leggere la trama ti fanno pensare abbiano un gran potenziale, peccato che poi apri il romanzo e scopri a che cosa stai andando veramente incontro…

Questo romanzo non mi è piaciuto per nulla, non c’è nemmeno un dettaglio che si salva.
La trama è del tutto assente: non succede nulla di eclatante, anzi! È solo un elenco telefonico di cose che succedono a questo gatto “pensante”, che poi tanto pensante non è, nell’arco di alcuni giorni. Le vicende durano tutte pochissime pagine, 4-5 quando sono lunghe, e alla fine di ognuna tu ti stai chiedendo Embè, tutto qui?, il tutto mentre ti scervelli chiedendoti perché mai sia stata raccontata quella vicenda ( Perché non vuoi farti del male chiedendoti perché hai iniziato questo libro ).
L’assenza di trama porta a voler abbandonare la lettura dopo 30 pagine e praticamente a stappare una bottiglia di champagne quando finalmente arrivi ai “ringraziamenti”.

G.B., il gatto protagonista, proprio non mi è piaciuto. Si crede intelligente, più intelligente degli umani che lo circondano, ma proprio non lo è. E non parlo solo del fatto che è talmente narcisistico da innamorarsi della propria immagine in una pozzanghera… (che poi vediamoci chiaro: questo gatto ha 6 anni, vive ad Edimburgo, dove la pioggia non manca mai, e solo ora vede il proprio riflesso, o, come lo chiama lui, la micia della pozzanghera, e se ne innamora?)
Ogni tanto G.B. fa alcune riflessioni su alcuni temi che riguardano l’umanità, come la politica e l’amore, ma sono tutte su argomenti classici e soprattutto cadono tutte nelle classiche banalità che vengono sempre raccontato e dette in giro, e l’autore non va ad approfondire nemmeno un po’ che cosa ne pensa veramente di questi argomenti (a meno che il suo parere su tutto non sia solo così superficiale… se fosse così saremmo davvero messi bene!)

Un libro decisamente sconsigliato, a meno che qualcuno non sia alla ricerca di un libro lento e vuoto, completamente senza trama.

This was fun, and I quite liked the various observations our black and white cat kept making, as well as his adventures with his two oh-so-different cousins (Saaf Landan Tom especially).

It saddens me, though, that Library Cat is actually missing—and has been roughly since the book came out. If any reader in the Edinburgh area happens to get a glimpse of Jordan, please let our University Library know!

This is a very charming book. Author Alex Howard, still (I believe) a student when he wrote it has imbued the titular Library Cat – Edinburgh’s most bookish feline – with a wonderfully witty personality. He studies the humans around him and critiques their habits, makes (to him at least) erudite references to Samuel Beckett and still somehow remains, well, a cat, with all the need for tickles and scratches you’d expect.

Some moments truly had me in stiches. A particularly memorable sequence involves Library Cat trying to understand poetry in order to win over a she-cat. In his hiding place in the library, he pulls out the GCSE Guide to Creative Writing: Volume 1. As he flicks through he is fairly unimpressed with the likes of Wordsworth et al. (a phrase the cat uses himself so I cannot be blamed for it), until he comes across, scrawled in the margin:

Library Cat goes on to describe the epiphany of seeing these words:

Such fantastic words! Such genius in their careful choice of imagery, meter and rhyme! Poetry had never before moved Library Cat so much … He looked around the Towsery. In the corner, by the fire, was indeed a small mat, and with that Library Cat headed over the to the mat and rested his furry posterior upon it. Cat – and the mat on which the cat sat – were one; united in a single, emblazoned vision of art.

If you liked that degree of silliness then you’ll definitely love this book.

A slight lack of cohesion is the only thing I think that lets Library Cat: The Observations of a Thinking Cat down. It cannot decide whether it wants to be a series of unrelated vignettes – the little charming stories of going to Marchmont to escape some book fines or his encounter with “the black dog”; a story with plot and development – some chapters build on one and other and some do not; or some sort of mock philosophy book – Library Cat expostulates on living life rather than thinking life and other such nuggets. I can’t help feel that this book could just have been that little bit better if it had decided more firmly to be one thing or the other.

Nevertheless, this is a delightful, whimsical novel that will brighten anyone’s day (well, anyone who likes slightly pretentious thinking cats that is). I laughed a lot reading this book. If you are not only a cat lover (I assume anyone reading to this point will be) but have also lived in Edinburgh or even been to the much-vaunted Library, then there really is no excuse not to pick this book up.

This was insanely pretentious. I was hoping for a wholesome read, following around a library cat, but instead what I received was a stuck up protagonist who thinks he’s better and smarter than everyone else. I understand the author wanted to lean on the “cats are jerks” narrative, but it’s hard caring for anything that’s happening in a book if the stories feel disjointed and the main character isn’t even remotely likeable.

Truly delightful, especially as an alumnus of the university of Edinburgh. A wee nostalgic trip into my student life.

Library cat doesn't seem like the kind of moggy who would like to share his feelings, but then again, he's hard to read. Luckily, the book isn't, and I feel like I now understand him much better. I loved reading about his cousins, biblio chat and saaf landan Tom (my all time favourite!!)

The book is split nicely into little chapters to be read and re-read over and over. I love it, it's perfect.

I still can’t believe someone actually wrote an entire book about Edinburgh’s infamous library cat! And his adventures, no less!

This was such an odd little treat. Wholesome, whimsical, and oddly soothing. It’s like curling up with a cup of tea on a grey day and letting a very clever, slightly sassy cat show you the world through his furry little lens.

An unexpected delight between heavier reads, and honestly… it made me smile more than I thought it would.

Library Cat is the cat of Edinburgh University's library. He patrols the central University area, chasing mice, allowing students to stroke him, eating pizza and searching for the ever elusive and enticingly beautiful Puddle Cat. But, because he is a thinking cat, he also thinks about the meaning of life, muses on why humans are so foolish and ponders the work of Nietzsche.

In this lovely book, illustrated with photos of Library Cat in his many moods (thoughtful, pensive, curious) the reader gets an insight into how this feline sees the world, how he feels humans are getting it all wrong for themselves and in their relationships with cats. We also get to meet his sophisticated French cousin Biblio Chat and his down to earth English cousin Saaf Landan Tom.

It's a lovely book to read, one that starts off very light hearted but that becomes increasingly philosophical as it goes on.

My ambition now is to meet Library Cat, so I'll need to find an excuse to spend more time near the University library!

Beh, carino, simpatico, G.B. il gatto della biblioteca che preferisce passare il tempo in biblioteca a leggere che stare a casa, belle le storielle e i pensieri che racconta, però l'ho trovato un pò sconnesso, cioè non aveva un senso, non era come un romanzo, non c'èra una trama, sembravano appunto delle storielle scollegate, un libretto frivolo e leggero, penso qualcosa di un pelo più psico-filosofico.

Mi ero lasciata affascinare dal gatto - ovviamente.
Mi ero lasciata affascinare dal fatto che fosse ispirata a qualcosa di reale - ad un gatto che davvero è un assiduo frequentatore della Biblioteca di Edimburgo.
Mi aspettavo una rielaborazione delle sue giornate, di cosa rende tanto speciale questo gatto da essere famoso e amato - anche perché, sinceramente, io Alaska non ce la vedrei in biblioteca. Anzi, la libreria bassa in camera mia le serve solo come appoggio per il suo regale deretano quando vuole guardare fuori dalla mia finestra.

Invece questo Gatto della Biblioteca - altrimenti chiamato G.B. - che si definisce "pensante" e di una razza superiore rispetto ai gatti "normali" è un narcisista pomposo che si ritiene più intelligente di tutti, tanto da trattare con sufficienza i suoi cugini francesi e londinesi - non parliamo poi di tutti gli altri.
E lo definisco narcisista perché si innamora del suo riflesso in una pozzanghera credendo di vederci invece una bella gattina e non capisce perché non la vede quando alza lo sguardo - mah, chissà perché.
Per carità, sono la prima che chiama Alaska "Sua Altezza Reale" quando fa la sdegnosa ed è sicuramente più furba di tutti noi messi insieme, ma qui ho trovato tutto esagerato.

G.B. passa le giornate a dormire, mangiare, rubare libri alla biblioteca e nasconderli nelle sue stanze per leggerli - certo, perché è credibile, cioè, va bene che è fantasia ed è pura creazione riportare i "pensieri" di un gatto, ma un po' di realismo e che diamine - e ad osservare l'umanità, lasciandosi poi andare a monologhi e riflessioni "profonde" e panegirici pieni di clichés che hanno di già visto e già sentito e che risultano pesanti man mano che si fanno più filosofici. E sappiamo tutti che io ho un pessimo rapporto con la filosofia.

Di base questo libro non ha una trama, non succede nulla, ogni osservazione e riflessione di G.B. sugli umani e sulle loro reazioni dura il tempo di 4/5 pagine per poi passare ad un altro argomento. Il problema è che, pur essendo narrato in terza persona, a volte è narrato dal punto di vista felino e altre volte sembra essere raccontato dal narratore onnisciente che parla di cose e oggetti che un felino ovviamente non può conoscere - e qui si sente la voce dell'autore e non quella del gatto, cosa che mi ha infastidita.
Perché passi un felino umanizzato come in altri libri, ma non uno che si comporta e parla e pensa come un essere umano.
Ha di positivo che alla fine di ogni giornata c'è un libro consigliato che in qualche modo è inerente a qualcosa vissuto da G.B. e ci sono riflessioni sulla natura umana che molto spesso sono azzeccate.

Si becca due stelle solo perché, per quanto antipatico, si tratta di un gatto e perché tra i libri consigliati ci sono anche How To Be Good di Nick Hornby e 1984 di George Orwell.
Se fosse stato completamente umano, con un protagonista così e la pochezza del libro la valutazione di una stella sarebbe stata l'unica scelta possibile.

Ironico, audace e un po’ sarcastico, il romanzo prende presto un’ottimo ritmo e si lascia leggere con semplicità e velocità regalando qualche buona ora di lettura e pensiero Felino.
Il protagonista del racconto, G.B., ha un caratterino tutto particolare: solitario ma anche volubile come ogni gatto che si rispetti, altezzoso, sarcastico e desideroso di grattini e spuntini, ci accompagna zampa nella zampa attraverso il suo mondo fatto di quotidiano divertimento.
L’autore eccelle nelle descrizioni e nella simpatia, cala un po’ quando si parla di coerenza interna al romanzo. Il punto di vista non è sempre chiaro: in alcun casi sembrerebbe essere quello del felino; in altri sembra di essere accompagnati da un narratore onnisciente. Entrambi i punti di vista sono abilmente descritti, ma il continuo cambio destabilizza un po’ il lettore.
Per portarvi un esempio concreto: il protagonista felino non sa cosa sia una multa, tuttavia quando si guarda attorno è in grado di descrivere l’ambiente circostante tramite metafore che tirano in ballo oggetti non più in uso comune con i quali un gatto non può obiettivamente aver mai avuto a che fare. E’ vero che il romanzo presenta la terza persona e non la prima persona, ma sono piccoli accorgimenti che rendono il tutto più realistico.
Un altro punto un po’ ostico, almeno per me, è il fatto che spesso e volentieri riesco a percepire perfettamente il pensiero dell’autore: egli non tenta neanche di mascherarlo, mette proprio le proprie parole nelle piccole labbra feline di G.B. e, purtroppo, si nota.
E’ nella natura umana dare più peso ai difetti rispetto che ai pregi, ma io tenterò di non farlo perché questo romanzo presenta anche tante piccole chicche per le quali vale la pena ricordarlo.
L’acutezza dell’autore è percepibile in ogni riga: a fine di ogni capitolo il gatto in questione consiglia un romanzo che dovrebbe essere il “riassunto” della sua giornata, più di una volta mi sono trovata a sorridere cogliendo esplicite citazioni o bellissimi richiami dal romanzo in questione.
Come dicevo all’inizio, il romanzo ha davvero un’ottimo ritmo, rallenta quando deve dare l’impressione di immobilità perdendosi in lunghe e bellissime descrizioni e accelera al massimo quando le cose si fanno più movimentate dando davvero al sensazione della frenesia.

LEGGERE È UNA FACCENDA DA GATTI è un romanzo scritto da Alex Howard e pubblicato da Garzanti. In poche pagine si condensano la vita e i pensieri di un gatto ‘intellettuale’ che vive – nella realtà – nella biblioteca di Edimburgo. Partendo da una storia vera l’autore ha inventato storie di vita, emozioni e sentimenti di questo famoso personaggio.

L’autore presenta le varie peripezie da gatto che il protagonista del romanzo vive utilizzando la narrazione in terza persona. Viene data voce ai suoi pensieri così noi lettori lo accompagniamo nel suo mondo ‘micioso’ mentre ascoltiamo i suoi ‘miao’ quando rimaniamo nella nostra veste di umani che osservano le azioni del nostro eroe.

Il gatto si chiama G.B. ed è noto anche sui social network, oltre ad essere noto anche attraverso le pagine di questo romanzo che propone immagini, una presentazione chiara di quello che si sta per leggere e vari consigli di lettura riportati a fine di ogni capitolo. I capitoli del romanzo propongono un’avventura diversa. Tendono a descrivere comportamenti e sentimenti del nostro amico a quattro zampe, incluso amici e nemici che incontrerà nelle sue peripezie. Oltre ad essere un gatto intellettuale, dotato di tanta sapienza, è pur sempre un felino amante dei grattini e di una buona dose di cibo per gatti. Come tutti i gatti teme i fuochi d’artificio ed ama le lunghe pennichelle sulla sua poltrona azzurra.

Insomma, il romanzo è una rivisitazione della vita, fatta di tanti eventi, a volte fortunati a volte no, che ci accompagnano nella nostra esistenza. Questa volta però chi lo racconta è un gatto, con tutte le sue manie di animale curioso e temerario, ed anche innamorato!!! Anche gli essere umani e il loro comportamento ed abbigliamento passano attraverso le sensazioni scatenate dalle sue vibrisse, ma G.B. è un gatto serio, filosofico e disponibile.

Romanzo dal linguaggio semplice con tanti consigli di lettura e forse il messaggio è proprio questo, nascosto dietro l’ambientazione della biblioteca dell’università di Edimburgo e di tutti suoi studenti: leggete, leggete, leggete!!! Parola di gatto, non ve ne pentirete!

Library Cat was a really unique book and I had so much fun reading it. The writing was really funny, often in a subtle way. The characters and different cats were interesting and unique, and the short chapters, written as little anecdotes from Library Cat’s life, were really engaging and fun to read.

I originally found the book having followed the author Alex on TikTok for some time. I just feel that I have to mention that my reading experience was made all the better by the personalised bookmark and message at the start which came with the book, so thank you very much to Alex for that!

You can really feel Alex’s love for Edinburgh and Library Cat throughout, which I think always adds a little extra magical something to a book. I did feel like I would have appreciated it a bit more had I been more familiar with the context of the university and Edinburgh. I did still enjoy it a lot but it felt like a few references went over my head. I think anyone who did go to the university would really love it though.

Also at times, it did almost feel like things came out of nowhere in the story, especially towards the end, and the tone was a bit all over the place. There wasn’t really a storyline so to speak, it was more one of those books where not much happens, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad book, quite the opposite in fact. The owner kind of came out of nowhere too, I wasn’t even aware that Library Cat HAD an owner until the very last few chapters, which seems like quite a vital piece of information. Maybe this was intentional, I’m not sure, making Library Cat seem more independent and aloof, but it was a little confusing initially.

However, overall it emphasised a lovely message to seek contentment and nothing more sometimes, in a world where we’re all constantly looking for more. I especially really loved the penultimate chapter, Symbiosis, where Library Cat reflected on all he had learned in a really poetic, beautiful way.

Lastly I just have to say that I loved Puddle Cat and that whole storyline. Again, it was funny, but also quite touching to see Library Cat’s unrequited love play out and his views on love.

Overall, a really nice little book which was a very fun read.

"I personaggi.
Beh, l’unico vero personaggio è G.B (da leggersi “Gatto della Biblioteca”), il gatto pensante che, appunto, abita all’Università di Edimburgo.
Devo dire che questa è la parte che più mi ha convinta. Perché non credo sia affatto facile immedesimarsi in un gatto e costruire attorno a lui scene a tratti tenere, a tratti gremite di un’irriverente ironia.
G.B. si fa portavoce dell’assurdità con cui dobbiamo apparire al mondo animale, specialmente a quelli della sua razza.
Se nell’Antico Egitto, come lui ci ricorda, abbiamo adorato il gatto come fosse una divinità, nel “300 l’abbiamo torturato, credendolo portatore della Peste Nera.
Fortunatamente, ci fa presente G.B., dall’Illuminismo in poi “siamo diventati istruiti”, e abbiamo smesso di credere a cose antiquate come la sfortuna.
G. B. evidenzia, inoltre, alcune caratteristiche del nostro parlato: “Ma quanto tempo perdono a dire la parola ‘tipo’?”
Ci fa notare, poi, che, nonostante il fatto che siano state inventate cose formidabili come la metropolitana, quando torniamo a casa siamo, comunque, incapaci o troppo impegnati per leggere un libro, riflettere, o rilassarci persino.
Perché, riflette G.B., l’umanità è sempre è comunque affannata e disperata. Non fa in tempo a cercare qualcosa, che subito riprende di nuovo il cammino, pur non sapendo nemmeno bene cosa cercare.
L’uomo è, fa notare lui, incapace di comprendere che l’unica cosa che realmente vuole- e di cui ha bisogno- è essere soddisfatto di se stesso, di quello che è diventato nel tempo, di coloro che ci amano e di coloro che, a nostra volta, amiamo.
Non riuscire a comprendere è il nostro peccato mortale, perché ci fa vivere poco e soprattutto male, colpevole anche il fatto che, a differenza dei gatti, abbiamo perso il gusto per le cose semplici.
Ci riempiamo di rolex, macchinoni, Iphone e quanti altri oggetti possiamo, eppure siamo perennemente insoddisfatti, tristi, frustati.
Decisamente, questo piccolo Gatto Pensante è riuscito nel suo intento: farmi riflettere.
Quindi, non mi resta che dire… Complimenti!"

Why are humans so obsessed with their glowing rectangles? What is the true meaning of a sunbeam? And, most pressingly, will he ever win the heart of the gorgeous, elusive Puddle Cat?

This book is a delightful peek into the mind of a cat who’s more scholar than stray. We follow him on his daily rounds—accepting strokes from stressed students, sampling discarded pizza crusts, and maintaining a dignified disdain for the library mice. But this is no simple cat diary. Library Cat is a thinker. He’s got opinions on everything, from the students’ life choices to the philosophical works of Nietzsche, and he’s not afraid to share them. His observations on humanity are laugh-out-loud funny because they’re so true. We really must look ridiculous to a creature whose biggest concern is the optimal nap location.

The story introduces us to his family, and they are a hoot. There’s his posh French cousin, Biblio Chat, who probably drinks espresso and looks down on everyone, and his no-nonsense English cousin, Saaf Landan Tom, who I imagine has seen things and isn’t impressed. Their interactions are pure catty gold.

Now, is there a traditional plot? Not really. This isn’t a story about a cat saving the world. It’s a series of musings, encounters, and small adventures. I’ll admit, I was a bit surprised when an owner suddenly appeared near the end—I’d always pictured Library Cat as a lone, scholarly sovereign of the stacks. But maybe that was the point. It reminds you that even the most independent among us have someone who cares.

The book starts as a charming, light read but slowly pulls you into deeper waters. Without you even realizing it, you start thinking about Library Cat’s questions. Are we chasing the right things? Is there more to life than the next can of tuna? His unrequited crush on Puddle Cat is both hilarious and oddly touching, a reminder that love makes fools of us all, even the smartest of cats.

G.B., il Gatto della Biblioteca, non è un gatto come gli altri bensì un gatto pensante; un gatto che legge libri e critica gli umani, soprattutto gli studenti che frequentano la biblioteca dell’università di Edimburgo.


In questo libro possiamo conoscere il mondo attraverso gli occhi di un gatto pensante. L’ho trovato un romanzo molto carino perché unisce i gatti ai libri, ovvero due delle mie cose preferite; tuttavia, secondo me non bisogna lasciarsi ingannare da questa facciata e pensare che sia un libro adatto a tutti – o soprattutto ai bambini – poiché al suo interno troviamo molto spesso periodi molto lunghi e complessi che i ragazzini non riuscirebbero a seguire o comprendere. Ho visto molte recensioni con forti critiche riguardo a questa particolare scelta dell’autore, ma io penso si sposi molto bene con il tema centrale del racconto, ovvero un gatto sofisticato che ama la cultura in tutte le sue forme. Giusto per fare un esempio, mia madre mi ha detto che l’ha trovato noioso perché molte volte si è trovata in difficoltà con la lunghezza delle frasi: lei è molto impegnata durante il giorno e quindi in caso legge la sera, però con la stanchezza che vuole buttarti tra le braccia di morfeo, direi che non è proprio il massimo cimentarsi in questo libro.
All’interno, si alternano capitoli molto brevi a parti un po’ più lunghe, ma tutto sommato la lettura è molto scorrevole, soprattutto per chi ha un minimo di nozioni di filosofia. Penso che sia un libro molto simpatico e, se doveste aver voglia di avventure gattose, potrebbe fare al caso vostro; alla fine di ogni capitolo, inoltre, si può trovare un resoconto giornaliero da parte di G.B. e un consiglio di lettura, cosa molto utile se si dovesse voler esplorare nuovi orizzonti.
