When Mathieu followed his king to war, he knew the Crusades were holy, that God went with him, and that he would return to the arms of his truest love. 800 years later, enslaved by the demon Gadreel, all Mathieu knows is pain.
After winning his freedom, Mathieu emerges from the dark void of captivity, only to find himself facing the soul of the love he left behind, in the eyes of Jenn Bartlett. Can he do the terrifying thing she asks of him, and still save her from the monster he has become? Or will the darkness overcome them both?
Mathieu was plucked from the battlefield 800 years before by a beautiful and cruel demon, forced into bondage, and filled with demonic knowledge. Long years after, his torturous bonds dissolved and his future uncertain, he must decide whether to risk his freedom to help another.
Irene Ferris' debut novel is about choices and costs. Mathieu navigates his own culpability in helping his demon (albeit as an unwilling slave), and debates whether his trauma will prevent him from living like a human in the future. Human beings navigate moral choices ranging from the evils of selfish tunnel vision to the seductive call of doing the wrong thing for all the right reasons.
In the end, no matter the choice, there's always a mess to clean up.
Independent reviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock. I was gifted my copy of this book.
I usually write a blurby bit, but I'm not gonna with this one. Why?? The original blurb says it all. AND threw me totally off!
You know how sometimes, when you read a blurb, and your mind lays a book out for you?? Mine does that all the time, but this time?? Way off, absolutely did not see this story coming at me, at all!
Its dark, so deep in places that Mathieu loses himself. It has magic. Demons. Hell and back. It has centuries of slavery, and centuries of love.
Its quite unique, in that I did not see where this was going, not even til the very end, and I am a little stumped. Not in a bad way, don't get me wrong, its just I did not see that ending!
I found myself struggling to read at times, but not because its badly written, quite the opposite. Its just so painful for Mathieu at times, and I had tears, for Mathieu, for Yvette, for Jenn and the others when it all unfolded and they did what they needed to do. I really felt for their decision, and for the impact it will have on Mathieu.
I can't go into any more detail, I might give it away. BUT I will say, its quite graphic in places, really physically painful to read. But extremely well written and very in keeping with the tone of the book.
I do wonder will there be more of these people, of Mathieu. I want to know how he copes, what happens to them all after this.
For a first time author, bravo, very well done.

Mathieu engulfs you in such a dark and mysterious world that you are not going to be able to stop reading. The story starts a little slow, but once you pass the first chapters the pace flows steadily through the end. The plot is full of action, with some raw scenes, magic, demons and an unexpected end. The amount of feelings are overwhelming, when I finished the book, my heart felt heavy. Mathieu is a fantastic character, complex, dark and tortured. I hope to see more of Him soon. This book is a four solid stars! *I received a Free Copy in exchange for an Honest Review*

This was a really good read.
This was an interesting tale with some unexpected twists. At first it seemed fairly straight-forward, but then one realised there was a lot more going on than is immediately apparent. There is suspense and mystery and danger enough to make it worth your while. All in all an interesting read!
