It all started with one mistake.
Zaydee Lansing was young and in love when her life got turned upside down. She thought that removing herself from the situation when the moment presented itself would help her fix everything. She hoped that all of the painful memories from the past would be swept away, and she would be a normal person again.
But the bitterness inside of her is cold and unrelenting. When an unforeseen event prompts her to go back home, she finds herself faced with every monster from her past.
How deep do scars really run? Is it possible to put mistakes behind you and start over again?
Zaydee Lansing made one mistake and it's left her broken to her core.

What a somber and emotionally draining story packed into a mini-book! The author's writing style was beautiful, descriptive, and flowed easily. The emotionally heavy content leaned a weeeeeeee bit onto the depressing side, but the story was easy to follow. However, I was VERY unprepared to find out just how young the protagonist was when she seduced her teacher AND how swiftly he gave in.
This was a multi-layered mini-book with an uneasy, edgy feeling that swirled all throughout the text, starting from the first page. While there were dual POVs in this book, the majority of the story was spent inside Zaydee's head and her thoughts were almost suffocating to me! She was often detached and her behavior baffling, but the ending, though...
It's a sad story of a damned and damaged girl Zaydee Lansing. Her life cut short of happiness and sanity at a tender age of 13. She is misguided teenager and commits a fateful mistake of falling for or lying in, depending on your viewpoint , her teacher. A man 25 years his senior. she falls pregnant and as messed up the situation is, there is no easy solution. Her parents do what they think is best. 4 lives destroyed that day . A major pile on of a wreckage that annihilates 5 lives. Zaydee , because her soul empties that day and she becomes a walking , talking shell of a person. Garett, because he does fly in love with her (I know it's fudged up) , he loses his heart and then his marriage. Zaydee parents, they not only lose their daughter, they lose their grandchild. scott , he is an innocent bystander, a victim of stray bullet (proverbial only) a collateral damage, so to speak. His is the most powerful loss of all . His life was born out of ill intentions, desperation, and the need to feel loved. Zaydee lost a chance at meaning full life Garret lost a chance at having a family. Scott lost a chance at a loving life. He was messed up with or without Zaydee. it's a tragedy with an HEA that is totally befitting to the context.
I read the full beta copy today. I can't even put together words right now as my head is spinning. Just when you think you have the plot worked out...well you don't. Yolanda is a brilliant raconteur, I haven't been bored yet. I'll come back and edit my review when it's been published in case changes are made, you know like a happy ending *snort.
I will never attempt to guess the outcome of any of Yolanda's books again! When you attempt to guess what will happen, you merely prove you don't know a thing! Nothing! Nada!
Family secrets have a way of coming out at the damnest times! What's done in the dark definitely comes to light! At 14 years old Zaydee and her history teacher engage in the horizontal tango AT school and it later develops into a fling. Zay is severely depressed and I believe this fling was a way for her to feel something. You can't engage in the tango, horizontal or vertical, and not expect for something to happen! Those pesky family secrets again.......
Fourteen years later Zay and Garrett reunite through tragedy. Zay learns some truths that pushed her one step closer to the edge. Once all is revealed, Hurricane Zay will stop at nothing to ease her pain. She will ease her pain by any means necessary....
The ending will gut you, bend you, bind you, take you to a place in your head where only darkness resides. Don't attempt to guess anything. It will only make you angry. Read it. Absorb it. Allow it to consume you like it's meant to.....the ultimate head trip! You've been warned!
Awesome book!! A bit taboo and emotional. Not a single dull moment. There was so much loss and discovery and heartache. My heart broke for Zaydee and then again for Garrett. And WOW, I absolutely didn't see that ending coming!! My mind is blown!!
(I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review)
Beware: Before reading this book, know there are many unsettling themes contained within. Statutory rape and suicide are an example of the themes explored in this dark tale. This story will not have a HEA; there will be no light at the end of the tunnel. Continue at your own risk.
The Death of Me is the story of Zaydee Lansing, a 30ish loner, living in Florida. Upon hearing of the death of her beloved grandfather, she travels back home to California to say to her final farewells, and to seek answers. She decides it is time to find the source of the misery she's endured for so many years. But she isn't prepared for the answers she finds and Zaydee learns that truth doesn't always set you free.
First, let me start with the positive. Yolanda Olson has a gift, in that her imagination is boundless. She is able to come up with these stunning story ideas that few can equal. It takes a brilliant mind to create such contrasting storylines. From the chaos of a serial killer’s mind in Save Riley, to the desolation of a clinically depressed woman's world of The Death of Me, Yolanda Olson has the rare ability to construct entire worlds from deep in her imagination. That imagination shows in The Death of Me. You the reader, are invited to view the world through the eyes of a woman whose life holds no light.
Unfortunately, that's where the positive end. Yes, Yolanda Olson can come up with brilliant story ideas. Unfortunately she has little follow through, and that shows with Zaydee’s story. Besides the originality of the tale, beautiful cover and hard core ending (which were all great) the story has little to recommend it. The storyline was not believable, was meandering and exceedingly maudlin. There was no character development to be found. The actions of the characters where not at all believable, and at times left me feeling greatly uncomfortable. I greatly wish certain scenes had been left to the imagination. Unfortunately, they were not. Many times during the story, my attention was pulled away, by both the impossible to believe actions of the characters, and the excessive attention to detail paid to the unimportant ( i.e. brands of clothing, type of car owned, etc). All of which contributed to my lack of emotional investment. I had trouble becoming invested into the story, and had to push myself to continue reading. It wasn't until about 40% in that I eventually became interested enough to not want this book to end up in my DNF pile, and I was able to move through it smoothly.
Overall, The Death of Me was better in theory than in practice.
The Death of Me by Yolanda Olson is a book about what happens when nature and nurture collide in the worst of ways. Zaydee is a troubled girl who makes a big mistake as a teenager and pays a heavy price. She gets pregnant, and when she refuses to name the father, her parents force her to give up the baby. Feelings of betrayal fester inside her until she feels she needs to leave it all behind and start fresh. It’s now 14 years later and Zaydee is again finding herself back in LA after learning about the death of her beloved grandfather. She has many questions for the people in her past. But finding the answers could prove more then she is able to handle.
This book is crazy good and I put an emphasis on the word crazy! It’s like seeing a train wreck about to happen and not being able to look away. You know something horrible is coming but you just can’t help but continue to read. Zaydee is a very complex character. It’s easy to see from the beginning that there is something a little off about her but you’re really not sure where it’s coming from until you get into the book a ways. I could easily identify with her feelings of betrayal and her anger. Parents are supposed to keep you safe and secure and loved; but Zaydee’s parents did none of those things. I felt in the long run that they were the true villains. I know though that most people won’t agree with me on that. Most people will think its Garrett. I felt that Garrett was just a screwed up man when it came to Zaydee. He really didn’t see her as she was. He didn’t see the whole situation for what it was.
There was a true Yolanda Olson ending to this story. I’m not going to give it away, but let’s just say that if there was ever truly wicked Karma, this would be it. There was only one person who didn’t get what they deserved.
I’m not sure how this book is classified, but if you like suspense and drama with a side of messy, this is your book. I highly recommend it!
"Tomorrow would be different; with the dawning of a new day, I would put Garrett's declaration of love to the test."
Zaydee, beautifully misunderstood and trapped within the restraints her own mind creates, she has unleashed the beast of her mental illness and now languishes in the realms of the lost. Losing time when she is held prisoner by her demons she is spurred into action when she discovers the only person she feels strongly for has left her eternally. Returning to where she once ran from she decides it's time to deal with the consequences of her mistake. It's time for those who turned their back on her to reap what they have sown.
This is a step off the edge of a cliff, a long hurtling fall onto jagged rocks. The fall itself is quite serene and you fool yourself into thinking that just maybe there will be a happy ending. That just once Yolanda would let her characters work through their dysfunction and find their happy place within the normal parameters of society. Nah...get a grip that's never gonna happen! Zaydee ends up exactly where she wants to be and it's perfectly twisted and fitting. This story is masterfully created to take you on a journey of a self discovery and acceptance for things that cannot be changed. It explores bad decisions and choices that were wrongly made. Love really with be The Death of Me, it is another five star awesome read by Yolanda Olson.

Disclaimer: The subject matter in this book definitely isn't for everyone. Be forewarned, It's pretty intense! Wow!!! I was able to, for the most part, relate to Zaydee and her situation (especially her stated of mind). The Death of Me is probably one of the most intense books that I have ever read and had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I did however feel slightly cheated with the shock factor in the end only because it's the first time I could see what was coming before it happened. I say that because I have been in that mind set before when you feel like there's only one choice and feel it's the best choice. However, I do feel it will definitely hold a very big Shock factor with the rest of the world and will cause a bit of an uproar to say the least. If I were anyone else I know I certainly would have had that WTF moment this just wasn't one of those times for me. Ultimately, of all of Yolanda's books The Death of Me is the one I feel most connected with. It's a controversial story with a lot of emotions going on and I loved every second of it. I feel that in the end everything happened exactly as it should have. Everyone that needed to suffer did!!! I was definitely left with a ton of emotions that I didn't quite know what to do with by the end and I loved that about the book. All in all, I say JOB WELL DONE, Yolanda!!!!! I would certainly recommend reading The Death of Me!
I give props to the Author for spreading awareness on depression as it tends to kill every teeny tiny thing in a human: mentally, spiritually, physically, and emotionally. Depression sets in and decimates you little by little, over time, or immediately, be aware, talk about it, tell someone, tell everyone, speak out, speak up and speak loudly.
This story was a sad tale about a woman who explored her sexuality albeit with the wrong person however I can't help but to think it might have been because of a malnutrition of family emotion, her family failed to succor her need for any sort of emotion or physical touch. At the same time I can't help but believe the older school official who should have known better neglected to receive his own loving tendencies at home and then supplied those needs unto Zaydee. Not to make excuses for Garrett however I believe this was his downfall.
I don't want to give away any spoilers, but my heart cannot seem to stop aching for the poor little love who fought against this disease without the chance to explore any known relief or family love, for this is the most heartbreaking moment of all.
All in all the author succeeded in telling a powerful story, one that supersedes all sides to every story and also with a Yolanda Olson twist at the end as only she can do and I thank you for that sweetheart!
If I had to describe this book using one word... DEEP! Present day, Zaydee, (known as Zee) is a 28 year old woman who left home at 18 and never looked back. At the age of 14, she fell in love with her much older history teacher which resulted in a pregnancy. Forced by her parents, the baby was put up for adoption. Keeping the father of her child a secret and carrying the burden of grief for the child she was never allowed to meet, Zee slipped in to a depression. Ten years later, Zee finds herself going back to her hometown for the funeral of her grandfather. Shortly after returning to town, secrets are revealed & Zee learns more than she was prepared for. **Author Yolanda Olson gives us the opportunity to read the character's POV who is obviously struggling with Manic Depressive Disorder. Well done, Yolanda Olson! Another 5 star rating!⭐️
Wow!! Yolanda did it to me again. The ending was totally unexpected. A Disturbing portrayal of how a destroyed innocence can ruin so many lives. A young, niave and inlove (she thought) 14 year old girls infatuation turns from innocent to devasting for those involved. For 14 years Zaydee lived with the results of her parents and families unforgivable deception and her shattered life. Moving across the U.S. did not help her forget the pain or help heal the pieces of her heart and soul that were shattered. When forced to return home, due to family tragedy and facing the past that comes crashing down on her. Zaydee realized how black and beyond repair her heart and soul are. With even more devasting news is learned Zaydee knows there is only one answer.
Zaydee...due to her grandfather's passing, returns home only to relive her past and reveal a secret that would set off an emotional roller-coaster for anyone.
I find this book emotional and it deals with aspects of depression like dissociation, the ups and downs of feelings and also a very real and common symptom (not going to spoil).
There is a scene that some readers my not be able to cope with; it's is a major part of Zaydee's story that sets her path in motion and needs to be said.
Yes, this is not a HEA, but then again life usually isn't and that's one of the things I like about the story.
Zaydee, a fourteen year old girl whose life is destroyed in an afternoon of detention at school. Mistakes are made when passion and lust are there for the taking. Progress 14 years and Zaydee has trouble dealing with life in general. Estranged from her family, she returns home after reading about the death of her much beloved Grandfather. After reaching out to Garrett, her old high school teacher, secrets are revealed and they only force Zaydee deeper into depression. Not knowing how to deal with life any more especially after some disturbing news Zaydee does the only thing that will bring her happiness and eternal peace.

If you have read any of Yolanda's stories, most are a dark rollercoaster ride. This one is no different, yet it is. It's almost like she has all of the past dark authors whispering in her ears, her own (who wouldn't want Poe in their head) dark muses. A young girl with a crush on a teacher, isn't that strange, but what happens when she acts on it and the teacher wants it too??
***Warning*** This book may not be for everyone, because of the subject.
This story is about a sad, and damaged young lady. Zaydee Lansing has been shunned, and angry with the world since she was 14 years old. This story joins her 14 years after her heart being broken.
This story makes you feel all kinds of emotions. I couldn't help but cry reading this, it is described and written so well that you feel like you are watching the book in your mind, not just reading it.
This book demonstrates how one event can alter your life forever, whether it it beautifully or tragically, and any fan of Yolanda Olson will know which way this one turned out. She is a master of the unexpected, of damaged souls that can and will rip your heart out, and always leave you wanting more. The Death of Me is no different.
This story of Zaydee has left me speechless. The ending has left me stunned. All in all, I loved this story because each chapter brought out a rollercoaster of emotions, I went from being sad, angry, hopeful and shocked, spontaneously. I enjoy reading Yolanda Olson's books and look forward to reading more from this author.
In true Yolanda fashion, she takes us on another insane ride. Following through a twisted girl's mind, and see if we can come out on the other side. Chilling and surreal, this book will keep you on the edge of your sear, and you'll be blown away!!
Once again Yolanda Olson sucked me in deep with another captivating book. This one is truly heartbreaking. Zaydee has gone through so much that I am not shocked by what happens
This book left me a speechless emotion wreck. It brings out the feelings of a broken girl and you fall in love with her on her journey of discovery. Lots of dark twist and turns all the way to the last page. This book is not for everyone, but is definitely a very emotional read.
Forbidden Love, pregnancy, adoption, alone and shunned from your own family. Heartbroken and Lost for so many years. Sickness, Death, Suicide, pain, lost love, This is a very emotional story.
It's room for the ol' cliche not to judge a book by it's cover (or in this case the length), "The Death of Me" captivated my heart and my attention. My guess is that it will yours also. Although the book takes just a few hours from cover to cover I felt that it was much much longer due to the riveting emotionally drenched story line. Olson, scored once again! My heart strings were tugged throughout this read, getting wrapped up in the content and characters; it's mood overall is quite fitting to it's main character's. Highly recommended. Loved the book. Not quite the typical Olson style but amazing no less..
Families all have secrets and in everyone's closet there are skeletons, those secrets are bound to come out one day. In Zaydee's case her families biggest secret, that left her shunned, and without rights came with the death of her grandfather. Zaydee finds out everything that was hidden from her and the largest being a "note" she was told to read when she got home, following her travels from LAX to Orlando. Once the note was read, Zaydee decides to deal with the shock in her own way. Stunning ending, do not try to figure out Olsen in this book let the story flow.
This book had a very different feel from the other books that I have read by Yolanda Olson, but I could sense the darkness creeping in as I got deeper into the story. Zaydee seemed to always be on the edge of losing it and I was eager to see how things would go for her when she returned home for her Grandpa's funeral. When Garrett spoke out at the funeral, my jaw dropped. I didn't see that coming. And later when Zaydee seemed as if she wanted to test Garrett's love for her, I became suspicious about what that would entail. When Garrett arrived in Phoenix and met Bill and Rose, I had a very bad feeling about what might happen next. I picked up on their wording right away and instantly worried about the outcome. It seems I'm always walking on eggshells while waiting to see how Olson is going to shock me next. The ending for Death of Me shattered me a bit and yet I felt that it was the best possible ending for the story.
I thought The Death of Me was a real and heartbreakingly beautiful story. This was definitely different from Yolanda's normal, but still had her name stamped all over it.
This book is not what I had imagined...It was 1000% better. This is the first Yolanda Olson book that I have read and I will definitely be reading more from this author!!!
This story is very haunting. It tackles some very tough topics - inappropriate relationships, teenage pregnancy, adoption, mental illness, dysfunctional family relationships, and suicide. Yolando Olson has taken her reader on a roller coaster ride of emotions...WOW!!
The characters in this book are so well written. You feel as if you reading about actual tortured souls.
I could not put this book down and cannot wait to read more from this author!! I highly recommend this book. You will be BLOWN AWAY by the time you reach the last page. Well Done Yolanda Olsen!!!
