A Book of Shadows is a collection of spells, notes, rituals and ingredients that a witch, wiccan, pagan or any other magic practitioner compiles for use in spell work and magical practice.
The Book of Red, White and Black Magic is an eclectic grimoire that has been compiled from Brittany Nightshade's personal book of shadows. It contains a wealth of magic rituals selected by the author that's for the beginner that's learning how to create and conduct their own spells and rituals. The book explains the nature of magic rituals and how we use them to cast our intentions and direct our energies to achieve the outcomes we set out to manifest, with the rituals and incantations being a guiding force for our inner magic.
The Book of Red, White and Black Magic Spellbook contains many spells and rituals, including but not limited

"The craft of ritual magic is a constant, fluctuating, living thing and our ancestors have divined, inherited, adapted, and even made from scratch what we practice today. Let this work be the hill that you use to construct a vast mountain. Be the magic and let it flow forth, aim your intentions to greatness and conquer the dark." -Brittany Nightshade
I've been a practicing gray witch for over 30 years and I feel uniquely qualified to review this introductory witchcraft spellbook. Some of the things I like is that the author has kept the spells simple, both in ritual and with ingredients. Too many spellbooks contain a list of complicated components that would cost a fortune or be difficult to acquire. For the best results, it has been my experience that the practice of witchcraft and ritual should be kept simple. I am also pleased to see the rune information included.
As to how this book is divided into sections (white, red, and black magick), this construct is meaningless to those that understand that magick is a neutral force. It's the intent of the caster that shades the spell in hues of white, red or black. With that understanding, I contend that nothing in this book is inherently harmful. I seriously doubt that a beginner could control the rage needed to cast a "dark" spell with any semblance of success.
I do wish this book spent more time exploring the ethics of witchcraft as a practice, the meaning of diety within the pagan community (because it is not the Christian construct), the importance of one's will, and what goes into the steps of casting or creating a spell. I do like her spells; they're well-crafted and unforced. But the lack of exploration of the fore mentioned points is why I gave this book 4-stars and not 5. I've read several introductory spellbooks that have spent several chapters on the subject. I realize that beginners want to get straight to casting, but one shouldn't enter this path without fully understanding just how much internal work must first be done.
Some reviews state that his book doesn't provide enough spells or that they are incomplete. I disagree. A beginner doesn't need to be given everything all at once. Witchcraft is a process, of learning and unlearning. And as to the completeness of the spells, they can work as-is.
A side note: I hope anyone reading the reviews on this little spellbook will disregard the trolls that would rather condemn any form of witchcraft as evil. The reviewer obviously has an agenda that has nothing to do with honestly assessing the validity of this book.
The description of the book looked promising, the book itself was not. I assume it was made with love and dedication, but it surely wouldn't have hurt to have someone do a grammar and spell check before publishing it. At the very least, there's one error per sixteen pages. Sometimes it's two on one page. It's very frustrating to read. The book itself is also rather chaotic here and there: the lay-out, spacing and subjects could all have been ordered better. It also has several repetitive areas that add nothing. The book is also inconsistent, for example: for all the Futhark runes it mentions the associated stones, except for the last rune (Othala). For the Othala rune the information seems to be cut off. I wanted to love this book, but it was just a big disappointment for me.
The Book of Shadows: Red White and Black This book was divided into two areas. There was terminology associated with magic PR actioners. (I like that better than witchcraft. Although it’s not a term to shy from because of what people *think* it represents). The terms aren’t anything you haven’t heard before if you’ve held the beliefs for a while. If your new to the beliefs they’re easy to understand. They’re brief and to the point (only about a page and a half).
The spells however are what make this book stand out from others I’ve read like it. You have the typical ones for luck, love, and finance as in most spell books. But these one goes a *lil( bit in another direction. It gets darker. There are curses and hexes. There’s shockingly even a spell that you can use to take someone’s life. Even tho these appealed to that dark part of me that’s written stories about revenge, it was still a shock to see because as a Wican the most important rule for us if “IF it harms none do what you will.” So the spell books I’ve read don’t teach these kinds of spells. I’m not saying I’d actually do any of these but it’s just .. different to see this.
The spells themselves aren’t complicated which is another good thing. The main things they consist of are different colored candles and some other items that really aren’t that hard to find or that expensive. The simplicity of this book is really it’s best quality.
Another thing that made this book stand out was it has an alphabetical listing of runes. Runes was a term I was familiar with but didn’t know anything about. I think I first heard the term as a class Hermine Granger was taking. Honestly, it didn’t really should all that interesting in the books. I want to say I associated the term runes with (ruins). It was nothing I wanted to know about further. But I’m seeing that there are TONS of different runes and they’re a lot like sigils s. This was probably the only part of the book, I struggled with getting through just because they were an unfamiliar concept and I didn’t quite know what to do with them. Other than that tho, the book was definitely unique.
Rating: 7 Because it went in a darker direction than the others like it Also because it was an easy introduction to the terms and spells.
This book offers an introduction to the world of magic rituals and spells. It is an interesting read even if you are a non practitioner of the supernatural arts. The book lays out what you would need to practice as a witch, Wiccan, pagan, or any other magic enthusiast. Step onto the enchanting path laid out by the gods and goddesses. An interesting read for the beginner and advanced practitioners alike. Within the pages you will find guidance on candle magic, crystal magic, rune magic, moon magic, and more. You will journey into the world of spell work and magical practice.
If you are into Wicca, this is a great spell book. There is knowledge of runes, dark magic, a small section on tarot and pendaliums. There are also a lot of spells, from love to binding, protection to rain.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Definitely not for the witches who solely practice "white" Magick. Brittany actually encourages you to work with who you connect with most and to alter things so that they fit your needs.
This book is very well compiled and full of helpful information. Most people when they begin looking into Wiccan religion and spells are intrigued but do not yet fully understand. In this book are many helpful spells with step by step procedures along with materials needed to perform said spell. Each spell has a variation from the other in one way or another; each spell is unique to itself. It’s amusing to see people who know nothing assume Wiccans are simply witches. Along with the spells and background stories in this book there are also many different runes. Each rune is on a different page with it’s meaning, good and bad purpose/effect, and how it is said/ spelled in other languages or cultures. I personally really enjoyed this book as I have in the past year become interested in the Wiccan beliefs and practices. It is a calming lifestyle and really helps to clear one’s mind, especially when under stress. When I first started looking into Wiccan beliefs and spells it was at my mom’s friend’s house one night as I sat and read through her witchcraft books. I created my own journal full of notes and to straighten in my mind what symbols mean what. Now that I have my own Book of Shadows it is much easier to continue learning the way of Wiccans.
