Jason, like many people, is an addict. His addiction doesn't center on any drug or alcohol. He's a pornography and masturbation addict, and the insidious nature of his addiction erodes his self-worth, his relationships, and his career. Jason meets David at a twelve-step meeting, where David offers him a new approach to treating pornography addiction. Through a series of meetings, David guides Jason as he successfully overcomes his addiction, a process supported by glimpses into Jason's family and how his relationships improve as pornography loses its hold on his life. Jason's story is fictional. The treatment plan he follows is very real. Designed by author and pornography addiction treatment expert Brian Brandenburg, the strategies found in Power over Pornography are praised by those who, having taken part in Brandenburg's program, now pursue lives free of pornographic viewing. Brandenburg's innovative treatment plan comes at a crucial moment in the fight against pornography and masturbation addiction. A generation of Internet-savvy children has grown up with access to pornography, quite literally, at their keyboard-typing fingertips. The images and videos they view online are far more graphic than their parents can imagine. Now the children of this generation have become young adults, with many addicted to the instant gratification of pornography. Like Jason, most pornography and masturbation addicts are male, but women are also afflicted. Maintaining normal, healthy relationships becomes almost impossible while in the grip of pornography. Anxiety and guilt over your actions worsen into clinical depression and self-loathing. Work productivity suffers, and an addict with on-the-job access to the Internet is always a few mouse clicks away from job termination and scandal. Jason and others in his situation are discovering traditional twelve-step programs don't address key aspects of pornography and masturbation addiction. Brandenburg's radical treatment takes a new, often counterintuitive approach to overcoming pornography addiction. His advice sometimes contradicts traditional strategies, but his system works. A comprehensive, easy-to-understand approach to pornography addiction treatment, Power over Pornography appeals to all readers. You can overcome your addiction. Let Brian Brandenburg and Jason be your guides.
I listened to the audible version and it was read by Brian and his son. Very amateurist reading but the content is solid. It is written as if in a dialog between a sponsor and a fictional character struggling with porn. I'm not a huge fan of the style as I would prefer just a explanation, rather than just a long role play. Once again I think the content is solid and would recommend it to anyone who needs help.
I'm not a fan of the way the information in this book was presented. I found the dialogue to be distracting because it was often tacky, inauthentic, and at times, leading- causing me to feel that the author's opinions were being presented as facts. The author is clearly not a believer in the 12 steps but ironically presents several similar steps and principles to the reader. What this method lacks that 12 steps offers includes accountability, connection with other men, sponsorship, and a continued regular meeting schedule where this book places responsibility for follow up (required for 100% long term success) solely on the reader without providing or facilitating a means to do so. Overall, the message presented is helpful and good in my opinion, although it could have been explained in half as many words. The methods are similar to the approach to overcoming anxiety given in the book DARE. Concepts such as acknowledging rather than fighting thoughts, feelings, and temptations are valid, and lead to the ability to work through and solve issues rather than suppressing them. The focus on choice and positivity is excellent. I will recommend the book to my husband, a recovering pornography addict who has found much success with 12 step groups. These techniques will be a nice compliment.

I have read many books on habits and addictions before and I already had some predisposed concepts in my mind when I first opened this book. My mind had already decided that this book will also have the same concepts for the addiction solution like Self-discipline, religion, self confidence, avoiding the temptation, replacing the habit with less harmful habits etc etc.
But I was wrong. The methods discussed in the book first seemed very ambiguous and illogical but as I progressed with the steps and the methodology they started making sense. Brian's approach comprised of 12 steps which included listing of positive and negative consequences, accepting and acknowledging the temptations, having freedom of choice, having a clear and vivid vision, practicing and confronting the temptation etc.
My best takeaways from this book are: 1. If you don't believe that the outcome is worth the effort, then your commitment will not be sufficient to finish the task. 2. By deliberately clarifying the consequences before taking action, we increase our chances of choosing wisely. 3. Your mind want to focus on the picture you give it, so give it a positive picture. 4. Emotion has more power to drive behavior and actions than intellect does. 5. Practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice make perfect.
Highly recommended. Learned new concepts and methods.
I try to like it but it gets complicated & too obsessed about porn itself
The beginning, the storytelling style is good. But at the end, porn is not become our new obsession, this book obsess about it (although using positive vision), but the main idea is not doing porn by doing positive stuff like practicing to deal with temptations, affirmations and so forth.
While the practicing, affirmations per se is not a bad stuff but the main point is already a false beginning, so no matter how good the material is, if the mindset of beginning already a false (which is obsess about recovery & porn, being sick forever) is becoming a new obsession.
The details is good, but the big picture is lacking.
It would be easy to attack this book on the basis of the hackneyed dialogue or the religious bias, but I won't do that. This book is an extremely powerful self-help guide, similar in many ways to Allen Carr's Easy Way to Quit Smoking in that in provides a step-by-step process that actually works. If you've unsuccessfully installed porn blockers, or tried to cut down on porn use, or felt the need to suppress your urges, then read this book to learn why those strategies failed for you and discover replacement strategies that will help you finally kick your porn habit. This book has changed my life and I owe the author a debt of gratitude for compiling it.
This is not to bad of a program for anyone that has an addiction to pornography. I would highly recommend that anyone to get this ebook and start on the program today. This is a great resource to have to help anyone.
