Show Us The Father: 7 Secrets to be a father on earth like the Father in heaven

Rate this book
What would happen if every father discovered his true identity, power, and necessity?

A father’s mission is to be a link between heaven and earth, between God and His children. He does this by becoming the voice of the Father that his children cannot hear, the face of the Father that his children cannot see, and the touch of the Father that his children cannot feel. This is his mission, his challenge, and his call to glory.

Show us the Father contains the battle plan for living out this call, offering seven keys to becoming the father that God has created and destined you to be. It is time for fathers to enter this battle, fully armed, with the bold commitment to sacrifice themselves for their wives, children, and the future of humanity by becoming like St. Joseph, a father on earth like the Father in heaven.

Good book! My brother-in-law gave me this book when my wife and I found out we were expecting our first child. I found it very good preparation for preparing to become a father. Something that would be worth reading again.

Did not finish.

While there are some "nuggets of wisdom" in these pages, ultimately, the 186 pages could have been cut down to about 40. The author spends too much time telling stories that barely relate to the chapter titles or uses "one liners" out of nowhere to sound eloquent. If you want to learn the seven secrets, simply look at the Table of Contents and connect the dots. You'll save yourself a lot of time and disappointment. All breadth, no depth.

Devin shows through his insights into christian scripture that human fathers are called to reflect the love of the divine father. Just as God the father loves us, we ought to love our children.
As a new parent who is already finding parenthood over whelming this book offers a spiritual perspective to revalute our roles as fathers in our family. He writes that heroic fatherhood is to share our children's plights as though they are our own. Fathers are called to set the pace of self giving love and to teach our children the lesson of authentic self giving love.
It also a reflection back on our relationship with our fathers. After becoming a father we understand more acutely how difficult it is to be a good father and how much selfishness runs deep in us and tempts us away from our familial responsibilities.
It is easy for fathers to often fall short in their role as husbands. I am reminded of what one priest said in his homily, the best way to teach virtue to your children is to learn to love your wife unconditionally.
Devin says that we should not be concerned that children are not always listening but be more concerned that they are always watching.
Fatherhood is hard, it is a daliy grind and it requires sacrifice. But as per this book it is intended that way to help us grow in authentic agapic love. After all, does love even mean anything without sacrifice?

Excellent book, It builds on the basic, yet earth shattering premise, that earthly fathers are the physical representation of the heavenly Father to their children. That simple revelation makes one even more aware of the awesome responsibility of being a father, particularly when you begin to understand your children's relationship with God reflects their relationship with you. While viewing my own fatherhood in a new light, it also gave me the opportunity to reflect and see how my relationship with God was heavily influenced by my relationship with my own father.

As the title indicates, the book is broken down into 7 "secrets" designed to help us successfully reflect the Father's love to our own children. This is done through looking at Jesus relationship with his Father and foster father, St. Joseph, anecdotes from the author, and a good balance of spiritual insights with practical recommendations. I'm not the most reflective guy, but this gave me the opportunity for plenty of self-reflection.

I highly recommend this book. Its one I'll be periodically revisiting as a refresher.

I couldn’t put this down!
As a Father in my thirties, the main thing I pray for daily is to be a good father and husband and I believe this book will help me with my mission to be this.
David touches home on some relevant stuff for all modern fathers, such as struggles with work life balance, all things I can relate to and learn from.
How God wants us to work for our families and be creative but not to the detriment of our family.
He puts everything together very clearly to show you that God our Father needs us to be good fathers and gives lots of great examples of how to do this.
An absolute winner of a book I will be giving out to many friends.
God bless you David and thank you.
