Good story lots of twists....tremendously slow paced....snail paced. Could skip a whole chapter and not miss anything. Not a great deal of chemistry between them. Kinda blah...usually I can't wait for the main characters to be together...not really this time.

Ok read

THE LADY'S PROTECTOR by Emma Prince is an intriguing new "Highland Bodyguards" series. WOW, what a fast paced, exhilarating, thrill ride of Scottish Historical Romance.
Meet, Lady Isolda of Embleton and Ansel Sutherland, one of King Robert the Bruce's most trusted warriors. An elite team of warriors, who help protect Scotland. Ansel, has been sent to protect the Earl of Lancaster, an English Earl who has the King of England's ear, illegitimate son. Lady Isolda sends her beloved son, into hiding, when accidents start to befall them, unbeknownst to Robert the Bruce. Ansel knows all is right at the castle. It doesn't take him long to know there is intrigue happening at the Castle, but what, he doesn't know yet. Where is the young lad? No one knows except Isolda, not even her trusted servants. Will she be able to trust Ansel enough to tell him where her son is located?

Of course, the first moment he lays eyes on Isolda, sparks fly between them. Ansel vows to protect Isolda and her son at all cost.
This is a tale of deceit, betrayal, intrigue, political intrigue, lies, danger, trouble, loyalty, trust, a bit of mystery and lots of suspense.
A fierce, sexy Highlander Warrior and a very determined Mother, both willing to protect a young boy at all costs, including death, if necessary.
What an intriguing first book in the "Highland Bodyguards" series.
The reader will find many twist and turns in this tale of intrigue and romance with the Scottish Highlands as a background.

A Deliciously wicked romp through the English and Scottish countryside. A must read! Once again, Ms. Prince has written a perfect Scottish Medieval Historical Romance. Ms. Prince is such a talented Scottish storytelling. Scottish Romance, readers will enjoy this tale from the first page to the very last and beyond. Readers will find themselves enticed and enthralled in "The Lady's Protector". Fans of Scottish Romance, Medieval Romance, Historical Romance and epic love stories will adore this story. I highly recommend "The Lady's Protector". I can hardly wait for the next grand adventure!

The Lady’s Protector, by Emma Prince. Another great read from Emma Prince. Once again I drifted off to the Highlands where I found myself lost in the loving romance of Ansel and Isolda. I enjoyed reading the action and romance from beginning to end. Ansel and Isolda provided some great entertainment for the die hard readers. The steam level is sizzling hot between the two. I appreciate that the author did write the book as a dramatic love story and the characters being to needy. The mystery and the entertainment put this book as a must read for me.

Scottish Warrior Guards an English Woman

Set in 1314, this is the story of Ansel Sutherland, a warrior who has fought at the side of King Robert the Bruce, who is given the task of protecting the illegitimate son of the Earl of Lancaster. Though Ansel dislikes having to apply his skills to help an Englishman, he accepts his role as a bodyguard for the alliance it may bring his king.

When he arrives in England, he encounters Lady Isolda, the boy’s mother who will not disclose the location of her son. But when nefarious attackers show up to go after the lady, he must protect her. So he takes her back to the Highlands and, along the way, their attraction for each other builds.

The story is mostly just Isolda and Ansel though as they travel to the Highlands, we do meet a few more characters. And, eventually, her young son, John. It’s a well written tale, which held my interest though I would have liked a bit more description of the environment around them.

If you like Highland romance with a capable Scottish warrior and a protesting English lady traveling north to the Highlands, you will enjoy this one.

This was a good paced story with plenty of action and interesting storyline. Ansel was a brave, honourable and handsome warrior. He was undertaking a task for his king. This brought him to Lady Isolda, there was more to Isloda’s story than appears at first. She was a brave woman, who looked after those she cared for. I enjoyed how Ansel and Isolda grew closer but there are a number of twists before things can be resolved. I enjoyed the historical information at the end too.

This was more routed in history than I was expecting, which I liked. The story was interesting, though the intimate scenes could get a little repetitive. I look forward to reading more of this authors work.

I noticed I had a few Emma Prince books in my Kindle that I hadn't read yet....gasp! You can always rest assured that this author writes wonderful Highland romance stories filled with history and heated passions.

When Ansel is sent to protect the illegitimate son of a powerful English Earl, little does he realize what he's really getting into. Isolda will do everything in her power to protect her son and trusts no one, not even the Highland bodyguard that shows up! As they get to know each other and secrets are revealed, danger has them on the run. Passion also runs deeps and neither can resist the pull of their attraction to each other.

I love everything to do with Robert the Bruce so any book that has mention of him, is a winner in my eyes:)

I wasn't sure I liked Isolda at first because she was so cold and haughty. To tell the truth, I didn't like her for most of the book. She just seemed to be so in love with her title of being an English noble woman. I did warm up to her later though.

I liked Ansel who was on a mission from Robert the Bruce to protect the Earl of Lancaster's bastard son from King Edward but he seemed to be the typical alpha male who you find in these novels. He was honorable yet had a problem controlling his lust. I wish authors would stop depicting Scottish Highlanders as slaves to their genitals.

Besides my complaints, it was a good read and I'm interested in the next in the series.

I can’t remember the last time I thoroughly enjoyed a highlander romance, probably about 15 years ago, as I have mostly read only contemporary since then. Recently I have been unable to concentrate on any contemporary romances (so much going on in 2020) and I wanted to read a book that would take me to another time and place and what better than a highlander romance.

Great story, loved the characters and since this is on KU on off to start book two.

Even with The victory of Battle Bannockburn the war still continues in one way or another. Great Start to a Fantastic Series
Loved it. It was a good amount of history with a perfect blossoming romance. This book was well written and easy to read. I liked both Ansel & Isolda. It was sad, It added a nice angst to the story. I liked Isolda’s strength and determination. I have read every book published by Emma Prince, she is one of my favorite authors. She is consistent in her writing ability, usually earning 4-5 stars from me (nothing less than 3.5). This is my 2nd favorite of the Highland Bodyguard series. WARNING: there is sex in this book, it is not erotica, but enough to be a steamy & hot adult romance. Please do not read if you are looking for something PG. Romance-5/5 Steaminess-3/5 Explicitness-3/5

Back in the highlands of Scotland!

This was my first book by this author and she did brilliant! In my Scottish historical romance experience Emma Prince captured the time, people and bits of true history to make this read believable. I adored both main characters, the romance was perfect and the challenges/drama spot on.
If you love a strong Scottish man, strong female characters, time period settings and Scotland, then read this series!

Tim Campbell's voice is *chef's kiss*. Excuse my spelling of the character's names, I was listening to the story as opposed to reading it.

Initial thoughts: Ansel is kind of a jerk. He really isn't very likeable at this point. I don't blame Isolda for not wanting him in her space.

Continued thoughts: Ansel turned his opinion of Isolda pretty fast, and it felt like they fell in love rather suddenly. Yes, they spent a lot of time on the road together, apparently not talking, on their journey, it still felt a bit like an "I don't like her/him" to "I must resist her/him" to "I love her/him". A smidge whiplashy. Personally, I felt like a lot of strife for the couple could've been avoided with some basic conversational skills, but that would've removed some of the tension.

I got so teary eyed when Berchel and Mary left! I hope they are able to rejoin Isolda in their new holding at the end!

I am proud of Ansel telling The Bruce the truth, and I'm glad he forgave him... though, I don't think a king would've forgiven him outside of a fictional story.

I've read this series in Kindle once before, but I've forgotten most of it, so I'm going to start it over with Highlands Ransom. I need to be reintroduced to these characters.

Ansel and Isolda's love story is full of sizzle and crackle as these two fight their attraction for one another.
Their adventure is full of danger, as this plot twists and turns and lives hang in the balance.
Ansel is everything a Highland hero should be, he is honourable, brave, handsome, muscular and an excellent swordsman. No wonder he is close to the Bruce.
Sent to protect the son of the Earl of Lancaster, he finds a beautiful, vulnerable and frightened young woman, Lady Isolda, who he feels compelled to protect and he is the perfect man for the job.
This emotional and passionate love story is such a touching tale of two people who realise extremely quickly that they are not only drawn to each other, but also in love with each other.
They are a perfect balance of hard and soft, with Ansel emotionally caught between his discipline of being the unbending warrior and part of the Bruce's the inner circle, but finding himself besotted by Isolda, and Isolda who desperately wants to find happiness and be loved, while not being afraid for herself and her son anymore.
I absolutely loved it!

I won’t recap the book as the blurb says it all. To be honest, this book wasn’t a bad read – though it could’ve been much more!

The hero was great and well portrayed. I appreciated the fact that he showed respect to the heroine  and met her at eye sight. I also appreciated that the female lead wasn’t portrayed as a damsel in distress but that she had enough self-confidence to meet her hero on the same level. In an attempt to create depth, numerous sub-characters were added to the plot. However, they appeared so late into the storyline and their roles/ actions were so minimal that neither their personalities nor actions impacted the storyline in any aspect – except maybe  for some enrichment of the plot.

The plot started with a bang and the reader was immediately immersed into the general idea of the book. Unfortunately the suspense didn’t last throughout the plot and after a while the tension faltered leaving the book somehow ‘uneventful’.  I might’ve expected more in terms of twists and turns and maybe I would’ve appreciated a more elaborate HEA for my heroes.

Generally speaking and in any case a nice beach read.

3.5 Stars The Lady’s Protector by Emma Prince
The plot and storyline was good and creative but, I struggled with some of the characters and dialogue. I found the heroine’s stead fast resolve to not tell anyone where she had sent her son for safe keeping, great! But, there were many things the main character did that were not believable so it was hard to keep my attention. The main character was King Bruce’s #2 most battle worthy warrior who was sent on a secret mission to keep a woman and her young son safe. He started out as as the ultimate professional warrior and protector who would never waver from the task at hand. But, soon he started berating himself as a barbarian because she was shivering cold and she was saddle sore even though they were literally running for their lives! So, he decided to forgo his survival training and baby her by stopping at an inn to let her rest for a couple days even though he had just fought and killed 12 of 13 assassins and was wounded himself, the day before. I couldn’t take him as a serious warrior or protector after he wanted her.

A good old-fashioned highland romance!

If you like your men brawny and loyal to their king and the women lovely and in need of rescuing, then this is the book for you. Ansel is a large, well-muscled highland warrior who is one of Robert's most valued men. He's part of the inner circle surrounding the king. He's been given a task by his king, and he's sworn to complete it. The only thing standing in his way is the lovely woman who won't tell what he needs to know. Isolda is the only person who knows where Angus can find his target, and she's not talking. She's sworn to die rather than tell the location to anyone.
If she's the only one who knows the location, then he has to protect her to protect the target. No one said anything about falling in love in the meantime, but that's exactly what they do. It takes a visit to Angus' home in the highlands, a stop at an Abbey, and finally, a festival at Roslin Castle to resolve the whole mess. Recommended.

This book drew me in from the start since it has good dialogue between characters, and the plot is kind of an adventure / mystery along with a traditional romantic tale. Ansel is every bit the hero, hunky highlander you hope find in a historical romance novel set in Scotland. Lady Isolda is not your typical innocent maid type; she is a strong character with her own secrets, and a some what guarded nature. I love the interaction between Ansel and Isolda - there is a lot of tension, drama and slow but steady development of love and romantic moments.

I like Emma Prince's overall writing style - it's perfect for the time period, and I love her descriptions of internal thoughts by the characters. The love scenes are great too!

The Lady's Protector by Emma Prince is an entertaining book. Ms. Prince has given readers a well-written book loaded with a fabulous cast of characters. Ansel is a warrior and loyal to the Bruce. He's not happy with the task he's appointed to carry out. Isolda is the mother of Lancaster's bastard child and nothing is more important to her than keeping him hidden and safe. Ansel and Isolda's story is loaded with drama, humor, action, spice and suspense. I enjoyed reading The Lady's Protector and look forward to reading more from Emma Prince in the future. The Lady's Protector is book 1 of the Highland Bodyguards Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

My Historical shelf is very short. I have read this one and one other. I thought this book was an easy clean read. Took me a couple days to read it. It wasn't especially remarkable but he was not bad. The protector Ansel is asked to find the illegitimate child of Lancaster and his mother. He finds her without her child in a castle that is being built she is not safe. She has some workers. And elderly guard and a house keeper/aid. He tells her he will come to the castle and break in as a test. He does and when that happens a real raid takes place. This is when he realizes she must leave. Turns out Lancaster wants his son and the mother dead. He obviously ends up saving her and her son in the end. It was good.

A mission for his King

When Ansel Sutherland receives an unexpected visit from Garrick Sinclair, little does he know that his life is about to change forever. Bearing a message from King Robert Bruce, Garrick tells Ansel that he is to protect the illegitimate son of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster.

When Ansel goes to Dunstanburgh Castle to retrieve the Earl's son, he finds only Lady Isolda who tells him that she alone knows the location of his quarry and she will never tell. However, assassins already seek both Isolda and the Earl's son.

I liked the main characters very much. Angel is indeed a fierce warrior and protector, and Isolda blossomed as she allowed the walls of her heart to fall. It’s a good storyline, and held my attention. The action was real and I caught myself holding my breath during several scenes in which Ansel faced seemingly impossible odds.
I felt however, that the book ended rather abruptly, or more accurately the entire story wrapped up quite quickly at the end without many details.
The writing is good, and it seems to have been edited well. This should be a good series.

Isolda and Ansel

Ansel is sent to protect a noble's son, but when he arrives the boy is not there. Only an English lady named Isolda and her servants. She knows where the boy is but will not tell him. When the keep is attacked, he whisks her away to the highlands. Most of the story is about their trip there.

I enjoyed this story with two very likable main characters. Isolda has a secret, but Ansel respects that and understands why. He has a lot of respect for her. I loved how he protected her. And of course fell in love with her. A very pleasant read.

Quick, good read

This is a historical Romance novel written about the early 14th century Scotland.
Of course, we have our hunk, macho Scot and the beautiful English lady. Not much new these. I guess what saves this story is the well developed characters and some of the dialogue. I found myself easily drawn to the writing.
Needless to add, I plan to read the next in this series and see if my opinion holds. I would recommend to readers of historical romance novels.

HEA Historical Romance

Very nice book by a very talented author. This book is full of colorful Scottish history both real and imagined sown so seamlessly together you can not tell real from the imagined. The descriptions of the highlands and lowlands were so vivid it was almost like being there in person. The characters were very likeable and endearing. I will definitely be looking for more books by this author.

The son!

Being sent on a Missive from his King, The Bruce was not something he could say No to.
There in England he found a young noble woman that would not tell him where his missive was, her son. Living in a half built castle was not idle to keep the mother of the boy safe either. Then they had to flee after they had been attacked in the half finished castle. This lovely hint of history for Scotland is every bit as you could imagine.

Well- written and researched Scottish Medieval based tale about a Scottish warrior sent to protect a lady and her son. True to the Scottish dialogue with many twists and turns, however, the plot is a rather common one despite small differences within. As with these Scottish warrior books, there is much explicit sex and bloody gore involved. Just the right length to maintain one's attention throughout.
