Colin Fox is an enigma. Part Scottish, part Aboriginal, as a child he is caught up the Stolen Generation. What follows is a period of abuse and sorrow, but Fox's innate sense of decency and justice sees him not only survive but become a respected SAS warrior.
However fate deals Fox another bitter blow with the murder of his adopted family.
Bikie gangs, gun running, dog fighting, and a mind that is pure evil cross his path in his quest for justice.
Ultimately, Fox decides on the only law he can trust - his own.
Author Bill Robertson retired from Victoria Police as an Assistant Commissioner after 36 years. Working beforehand at metropolitan and country stations, he held the portfolios of Research & Development and Personnel & Police Training.
Right from the first page I was hooked. It was so incredibly confronting and at times I just had to take a break. Should be compulsory reading given the topics the book covers. The map was a great help in particular for the early chapters. A real page turning thriller. My interest in the author has been stimulated and I am now keen to read his earlier book. I am surprised that more people don’t know about this book. Think the Stolen Generation, Rabbit Proof Fence, recent Royal Commission, Crime and Corruption, a touch of A Little Life and matters of justice and revenge. I felt it had to be a true story since it was so convincing.
Bill Robertson, a retired Assistant Commissioner of the Victoria Police, draws on his depth of police experience and indigenous research to provide readers with an intriguing tale. He masterfully tells the story of Colin Fox, a courageous and resilient young man who lives between two cultures. Born to a Scottish father and Aboriginal mother, Fox, as he likes to be known, becomes part of the stolen generation at the age of ten. After residing in a few missions in Western Australia, Fox became part of a boxing troupe by the age of seventeen after going walkabout. Fox was a great fighter. As fate would have it, he reacquaints with one of the few authority figures that ever showed sincere kindness to him as a child. Caroline Connors, a policewoman with the West Australian police, saw the unique and beautiful qualities that lay within Fox. Caroline and her family became instrumental in Fox joining the army. He was a gallant and clever fighter who later becomes a lethal SAS warrior. During this tale, there are other dark forces at play that involve Fox, and what unfolds is both numbing, intriguing and horrific. It is a tale of bravery, resilience, revenge and persecution.
I heard Bill Robertson talk recently at my local library and the book sounded interesting. This is his second book and he draws on the his background as a former Assistant Police Commissioner in Victoria - so there is a ring of authenticity about it. Colin Fox is half Aboriginal and half Scottish. he grew up in Turkey Creek and became part of the stolen generation. Fox is a typical stoic and perfect hero. The book is true to its genre and quite a good read and you can relax knowing that everything will turn out alright in the end.
Very interesting novel. I hope this author explores this character further. A fantastic look at some of the effects of the stolen generation on the children who were taken.
