All Lilly Davis wanted was a simple life. She thought she could have that with Peter Hewitt. She was wrong. With too many secrets getting in the way she knew it would never work.
Accepting her parents’ offer to help with running a new art gallery in Paris, she thought she would be able to put her feelings behind and start a new life, only it didn’t work. Her days were filled with thoughts of Peter.
Returning back to New York, Lilly wanted what her best friend Dylan Matheson had, a loving home, a beautiful child and a man that loved her more than life itself. Only the man she wanted to share these things with still had secrets that could tear them apart forever.
When danger and loss enters her already imperfect life, would she finally be able to let down her guard and give the one thing she said he would never have. Her heart.

My love for writing began several years ago after an early retirement from a demanding job that I loved and hated because it consumed so much of my time. Now, I can focus my time on what I love. Writing romance has been a lifelong dream and to actually say that I am a published author is beyond what I would have ever expected.
Even though some may say I have a little naughtiness in my books, I look at it as an added bonus for my readers. After all, what is a romance book without a little spice?
When I am not writing, I enjoy spending time with friends either at home or out on the town. Mostly, I enjoy a relaxing night at home where I can enjoy a glass of wine in the company of a good book.
Out of everything, she enjoys driving in her little convertible with the top down.
This is a hard review to write. I don't like leaving anything lower than a 3 star. I had to push myself to finish this. I hate DNF, so I always try to finish and hope it gets better. Sadly, this one didn't for me.
There were quite a few things that bothered me.
First, I didn't feel any type of connection, beyond sex between Lilly and Peter. We know they were together before this book started, but I'm not sure for how long and how their relationship was at that time. We were just told that she left him and went to Paris. But he didn't fight for her to stay.
Second, and this is the biggest one for me. When the things with Pierre started, she didn't remember what happened. Yet, she had bite marks all over her. She didn't freak out about not remembering. Even when she was told she was probably drugged and raped. No freak out at all, but she did jump right to having sex with Peter.
Third, there was so much inner dialogue. There wasn't much conversation between the characters. And when there was, they talked for a few paragraphs, then went right to having sex.
I'm all for some hot and steamy scenes, when it progresses the story. With this story, it was mostly sex and little story line.
Fourth, Peter runs a security business and is ex military, but yet when he thought that Lilly's gallery was broken into, he had to look for something to use as a weapon. You would think he would be carrying since he is in the protection business and knew that she needed protection.
Fifth, how could he know, from a few hang up calls, that she had a stalker. Nothing was said on these calls. There was nothing sent to her. But a hang up call automatically screams stalker to him. It didn't add up.
There was a lot going on, it almost felt like there should have been a book before this one. Things weren't explained.
What a total fucking waste of my time. I've been in a book funk lately, so cruising through my library on books I haven't read I stumbled across this book. Sadly I finished it but I wish I hadn't! This book is poorly written and put together, it's extremely choppy and jumps from topic to topic. It reads like a second book since things are happening that confuse you because HELLO this is book one and nothing about these characters have been explained!!!! Also I'm pretty sure this author is confused on her writing material... is my book a romance, a drama, security/military read, a romantic suspense? I know let's throw in some talk of bdsm & a stalker yea that's what this book needed one more avenue to explore but not completed!! I'm sure this was a freebie or I wouldn't have stuck it in my tbr and forgot about, I wish I had never found it! Kicking my own ass right now! I hate writing bad reviews but I hate even more wasting my reading time with a total craptastic book! I DO NOT RECOMMEND READING THIS BOOK EVER!
I did NOT finish this book. I couldn't get past so much right off the bat that I had to give up. It felt like I was reading a poorly researched journal entry - I woke up. I went to the bathroom. I drank coffee. I took a shower. I have a friend and we are rich. She has a baby and a husband. I fantasize about my ex. We live in New York. Dear author, New York is the state. New York City is it's name if you're a tourist. I think you were trying for "Manhattan". Someone living just outside "New York" could mean anything from Connecticut to Long Island to New Jersey to Pennsylvania. Possibly you meant Staten Island? Which is a borough, by the way. Additionally, a building just off of 5th Ave would run you somewhere between 300 to 500 million dollars to PURCHASE. Who the hell has that kind of liquid cash? How? Lastly, dialog and banter are your friends. If you talk with your friends like you write dialog...wow. Keep trying. All in all, I felt lost. Like I was reading book 2 or 3 in a series instead of book 1 and the premise was beyond unrelatable.
While I liked the premise of this story, the constant back and forth was ridiculous. The female lead couldn't seem to make up her mind. One minute she's telling the male lead she's not interested and wants him out of her life and the next she's kissing him. This happens in the same sentence!! It was just to much constant drama and not enough action to be called a romantic suspense. The male lead was not really alpha male and spent too much time apologizing. He kept saying he needs her in his life then turns around and says we can't be together. On nearly every page it was a yes we can, no we can't situation. I have chosen not to read any more books in this series because I just don't see it getting better.

Very nice story. Lilly returns from Paris to open an art gallery. She dated Peter before she left for Paris, and thinks of him often while there. Upon returning to the States, she gets back with Peter only to find he is still keeping secrets. I really enjoyed the story. The characters are well done. And the writing is good. I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.
This started out great but as the story progressed it seemed to get a little out of control. Peters reasoning was at times hard to follow. Overall it was an enjoyable read.
The story/plot were really good but unfortunately the writing was choppy/jumpy shifting from one topic to another constantly in the blink of an eye. The book is also poorly proofread and has many typos which is distracting. BE AWARE that this seems to be a spinoff of the authors 'Shattered Innocense' Trilogy which I only discovered after doing some research because I felt like I was missing some background. The book is so highly sexed to the point that it becomes annoying because you're waiting for the story to move forward but we need to wait for them to get their rocks off first. The sex is also a bit of 'rinse and repeat'. It was okay but not a book I would recommend with sooo many others to choose from.
This could of been such an awesome book but instead it was a story about a couple that used sex as a go to for everything
I was disturbed that the incident with the drug and "rape" was put into the story yet the main character didn't think more about it and then still had aex with someone else.
Then the attempt of rape also gets used and a stabbing takes place yet this is brushed over.
I almost felt like I was readying a story about nympho's and I spent alot of time skipping all the sex scenes as it became so frustrating to read pages and pages of a sex scene yet
Hewitt was an interesting read with a lot of twists and turns and a love story that was not all smooth sailing. I both loved and hated it, it was full of so many lies and suspense and I couldn’t put it down until I knew everything. Loving one man should not have been so hard but when he keeps so many secrets how do you trust him. But what if learning those secrets would be the one thing that would tear you apart forever. While the premise of the story was good it could have been fleshed out a bit more so it flowed better but it was still worth the read.
Dnf. Gal is proud of herself because she is setting up her own gallery-- with her trust fund. She got a new car-- daddy told her he would take care of that for. 13 chapters in, she has returned from 2 years in Paris, and she has seen her bestie and her ex, and only talked to Daddy when she got tired of paying taxis in New York City. Wait till she finds out about parking a car in NYC! She spends too much time getting drunk or hungover to take seriously. A trifle, and not a tasty one at that.
I actually stopped reading this because at the beginning it features Dylan Lilly's bff and had to read about her and Rade in the Shattered Innocence Trilogy because I just knew there was a back story to those two worth the read, enjoyed Hewitt getting to know Lilly and Peter more as they both appear in the Shattered Innocence Trilogy saying that you don't need to read that trilogy to enjoy Hewitt. Good book to start a series, you also start to get to know the team in the following books in the series.
This book was completely horrible. Lilly keeps telling Peter how she can't be with him because of all his secrets, yet a few pages later she's in bed with him. Why do authors continuously make the female main character weak? Knock it off. Would you like a book written about you, only to have you a weak helpless female? You need protect 24/7 because you're to stupid, to helpless to take care of yourself. How is it with everything going on with Pierre, with Peter all of a sudden Dylan dropped out of Lilly's life? There's a second book? Fix this one first.
DNF at 10%. I just couldn’t with this book. It jumps around so much and characters names are just thrown out there and you’re supposed to figure out who they are and how they fit in. She comes back from the gym to find her door open and when she only finds her neighbors cat she’s seem unconcerned? Umm?? Are cats opening locked doors now? Just an oh well, doors was open and we’re moving on. Ugh. I do not normally like to just quit a book, but I felt if I read any more I would lose some brain cells.
I give this 3.5 stars. The pacing of the book was good and it kept me interested through the entire thing. I like the main characters. The story is jumpier/not as smooth as I like for transitioning from scene-to-scene and person-to-person. Most of the book is from the heroine's perspective, which felt a little off as I was reading, and the hero's perspective seems a little disjointed from the rest of the story.
Yeah well, I got a couple of chapters in and couldn't believe how boring this book was. I usually give benefit of doubt when I start a book...but this was awful! It was written in the female leads pov, and to be honest, she just came across as extremely selfish and shallow. It also read as if it was a second book in the series comments were made as if the reader knew what was going on! Luckily found it free.
A good story line with a kickass, male lead. Peter, was very protective of Lilly, but, also very secretive. As for Lilly, for the most part she was likeable, although she certainly had her flaws. I found her to be a bit naive and a tease. I was a little shocked after Pierre did what he did, she wasn't 'checked out', and was soon rolling around with Peter again.
This is the first book I have read from A.L. Long and I loved it. Peter just seems like such a genuine man, he just has some secrets from his past. Lilly is such a sweet girl who is afraid to give her heart away because she doesn't want to get hurt. Lilly and Peter are just so perfect together. I can't wait to read more of Ms. Long's books!
I felt like I started in the middle and missed the beginning. I was at a loss as to who the characters were they never developed and at the end I felt like I still missed half the story.
I had a bit of a disconnect with this story. I also had trouble feeling a connection with Peter and Lilly. The story would, in my humble opinion, have been better if the there had been more background on the characters. It was somewhat disjointed.
I loved getting to know Peter and Lilly. Lilly was very sweet and Peter was so !oving. I'm glad they worked everything out. Can't wait to read the next book in the series!!
I loved this story. The characters in this book are wonderful. The plot was written exceptionally well.It has twists and turns and ups and downs. It will keep you turning the pages until the very end
Peter and Lilly have not only history, their chemistry is explosive. But Peter has as secrets that Lilly is uncomfortable not knowing. As secrets do, they come out and the fallout might implode them. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Didn't finish, not rating. Although I don't see anything saying you need to read The Shattered Innocence trilogy first, there are too many parts of the story that don't make sense without the back story. I'll keep an eye out for the trilogy to go on sale and then I'll come back to this.
Another fantastic read by A.L. This book kept me engrossed from beginning to end. Thriller/ Romance with secrets and mystery. I always love when you realise a good book is a series.
I really loved the story. It kept me wondering where things were going to go. I was new to this author before I read this but I'm ready to hear Cop & Brie's story now!
Dark novel full of danger. Steamy sex scenes a plenty! One gripe is why did "Adam" kill himself? why did he have a death wish? I loathe unanswered questions...
