"Elephant" is brave and bold debut collection of poetry by writer, poet and performer Siana Bangura exploring a wide range of subjects from womanhood, Black Feminism, racism, and identity to gentrification, changing urban landscapes, and love inhibited by patriarchal norms. No stone is left unturned. The elephant in the room is finally confronted.Bangura does not shy away from dealing with even the most taboo of subjects with a brave, bold and candid approach. Siana Bangura is a writer and poet hailing from South East London via Freetown, Sierra Leone.
Wonderful collection of poems. Heartfelt and poignant, Siana Bangura not only writes about her truths, but also has her finger on the pulse of contemporary British society, centering the experiences of the Black diasporic communities in London. Sometimes devastating, other times elevating, Elephant is a reminder to find beauty and wonder in everyday life, stay woke, persevere in times of loss or hardship, and to revel in the company of and sing praises to the people we hold close to our hearts.
5 stars - IMMEDIATELY YES. Easy read, fast-paced, short & powerful. Through poems, she addresses topics such as Black (British) girlhood, womanhood, (her ow) trauma(s), unemployment, gentrification, disenfranchisement, love, loss, and racism. BUT it's not trauma porn, which is why I like this book.
Incredibly beautiful and poignant work from a fantastic poet. Can't wait for the next collection...sit with these poems and listen, regardless of your experience.
