You might look at this book as either somewhat dated, or ahead of its time, or perhaps a little of both. It advances the concepts of Positive Affirmation and dabbles into the foundational principles of Brain-Heart Coherence before such a term was even coined. Though the examples of real life problems and solutions come right out of the 1980's, the fundamentals introduced at the time of its writing continue to be successfully applied today in many arenas of both individual and guided mental therapy.
The author lays out his 5 basic principles for dealing with issues of anxiety and depression, which are in his own words: (spoiler alert?) 1. "Use the creative powers of your unconscious mind to help you change yourself." Or, in other words, realize that you are subject to years of programming, and that the most efficient way to overcome this is to reprogram your subconscious mind. 2. "Use visualizations and affirmations to change your self-image so that you feel confidence rather than fear." Or, in other words, write a new script for how you think about yourself and your world. 3. "Use rational and positive thinking to see yourself and events as they really are and also to visualize how you want them to be." This is more of an extension of #2, but with the focus being on creating a future reality. 4. "Act as if you are already the way you want to be." Or, in other words, don't wait for your circumstances to change before you take action, for our behavior has the power to shape our reality. 5. "Set goals to become the person you want to be." This is basic goal-setting 101, but more focused on sustaining the efforts made in #'s 1-4, rather than uncovering any sort of revolutionary goal-setting technique.
Bottom line, a careful study of the entire book may not be necessary. But using certain chapters for a deeper dive into some of the areas you find most relevant makes it a worthwhile read.
I found this book in the St Johns, Michigan public library when I was in middle school. Something compelled me to check it out and read it. I had a semi-stressful childhood. I think this book gave me life tools for learning how to relax. After all if you learn skills such as the ones in this book at a young age they will improve over time. I must say of all the books I have ever read (other than the Bible) this is the one I am most glad I gave my time too. Oh an when I read it I was not a fan of reading, but I read it in just a few days.
One of the best books to help you with anxiety. I was suffering from severe panic attacks and this book helped me massively, mainly chapters 4 and 5. Those were big eye openers which I still remember and practice to this day.
I first picked up this book randomly over five years ago and the words have yet to leave me. I recommend this to anyone I know who thinks negatively and is suffering from anxiety. Give it a shot!
