I really enjoy using essential oils because they're wonderful additions to homemade cleaners, massage oil, lotions, etc. I like having them in a diffuser to help with headaches or stress. My SO likes the ones that make him feel energized and recharged. I usually have some with me when I'm out in the world on a hanky in a plastic bag or with a carrier oil in a rollerball. So when I was given the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review, I took it.
Chapter 1 asks "What are essential oils?" and is a very brief overview of the topic, however I did learn a few interesting things. Chapter 2 asks "What is aromatherapy?" This gives a quick historical look at the development of aromatherapy. The French chemist that coined the term "aromatherapy" is mentioned but not the year(s) in which he made his discoveries and I think that would be good information to include. Chapter 3 is about "The Different Ways to Use Essential Oils" and explains exactly that. Chapter 4's title is "The Healthy Benefits of Using Essential Oils" and shares some reasons these scents are beneficial. This chapter also discusses multiple oils that are helpful for weight loss and healthy skin. Helpful information like the best methods of application is included. The book states oils can be used to manage mood problems. Unfortunately while the author gives an overview of how scents impact mood in general and lists oils that are helpful, the specifics of what oil treats what mood symptom like anxiety, depression, anger, etc. is not included. Chapter 5 is "Choosing the Best Oils and Storing Them" which details the things to look for when buying oils. Chapter 6 is "Safety Optioms While Using Essential Oils" and gives safety tips.
There's a tendency for run-on sentences and slightly awkward phrasing although meaning remains clear most of the time. This book doesn't give enough information to be a great historical guide to essential oils or aromatherapy. It also only seriously delves into two major issues of weight loss and skin problems, so it's not for you if you want to treat other conditions. I wish this book dealt seriously with more problems.
This is a relatively small book and can easily be read in a short sitting. According to the book's introduction, it's aim is to provide well-proven steps and strategies of making the most of essential, important tips on choosing the best oils, and being an overall ultimate guide for how to use oils for healing. Cure for the People had set my expectations quite high for this 33-page book just from the introduction alone. I thought the author provided some great background information on essential oils and their uses as well as basic information about specific oils that could be used to aide in helping with weight loss, improving skin, and boosting happiness. However, I expected more in the way of suggested recipes and ways to implement the essential oils into my daily practice. For example, ginger oil is listed as being useful for weight loss, but there is no suggestion for how many drops per day would be beneficial. As someone who is a relative newbie to essential oil use, I did learn some interesting facts about some new oils and other readers may find the information useful as well.
This is a very good resource if you are starting out with essential oils. I have already gathered my oils and will be using the suggestions used in the book. I have been using carrot essential oil with Argan oil on my face twice a day. I put a few drops of Argan oil in my palm and add a couple drops of Carrot oil to that. Then I apply it to my face and neck. I am new to essential oils and I am trying to get rid of all products that contain chemicals.
This was a very good overview of essential oils. It was short and to the point. It gave basic info. I think it could have been a little more detailed in some of the sections. I enjoyed it, though, and definitely recommend it especially for someone new to essential oils.
