A realistic outlook on what it means to be in a relationship after the ‘happily ever after’.
You just don’t get it right all the time and life got in between Kayla and Michael. Feelings for bottled up, communication became difficult and things gradually became tense.
But then the communication happens and these two have the sweetest thing going.
A basic, somewhat predictable continuation of So Sweet. Everything that happens is basically expected. I still enjoyed it. Which is also rare since I'm usually against this much fluff and I'm also getting tired of traditional and conventional endings. I mean, I could really use reading a romance that doesn't end in marriage and children. But again, I was still very much caught up in this story. I'm eagerly awaiting the final book in the series that comes out in November.
A young, chubby Black woman with a great narrative voice is dating a literal silver fox billionaire. How they got together is in the previous book, So Sweet. In this one, the protagonist Kayla has to deal with and process and eventually confront him over the weird and insensitive way he proposed, which casts and awkward tone over the whole engagement. Meanwhile, he bought a sports team so the plot moves to South Florida -- which obviously I was eating up.
Kayla wakes up after a night of great sex with the line "It was a bird chirping kind of day." I love how that's evocative and poetic enough to immediately conjure up the image author Rebekah Weatherspoon wanted, without interrupting the narrative.
I love the way these books combine utter unabashed and unashamed wish fulfillment (getting to spend time in multiple giant mansions, going to the shelter for a puppy and coming back with two puppies, having your own personal stylist who's the same marginalized race as you are so she'll do right by your skin tone, etc.) WITH a realistic level of microaggressions. This does two useful things, in my opinion: it makes it easier to enjoy the wish fulfilment because it makes it seem more realistic, and also since Kayla now has access to Michael's wealth and power secondhand, many of these problems will be easier to solve and that's validating to witness.
For example, since she's the fiancée of the team's new owner, they get her a shirt or a jersey or something -- but it's an XS and she's definitely not an XS. It's annoying and she feels it, but we all know she's going to be able to get the right size eventually. This says Hey! Treat fat women better, but also you get the reader satisfaction of knowing at least in her case, it's gonna work out. We also don't have too many of these moments, because the book overall is fluffy and fun and the explicit romance equivalent of those TV shows people watch to get a peek inside mansions.
Things work out by the end but Kayla has to figure out how to articulate what was wrong with the way Michael proposed and how he's continued to orchestrate the engagement after she accepted. These books are pretty sex-heavy, so whether that's a positive or a negative for you, now you have that information.
These books don't necessarily make me want Michael, but they do make me really enjoy watching Kayla move through her world whether she's dealing with problems or getting to enjoy luxuries. She's a cool person to spend time with.
I slipped up and waited way too long to write this review after reading the book, so please don't count on me to be as helpful as I usually try to be or have marked any potential trigger warnings although I feel like if there were any, I would have taken a picture with my phone to remind myself to mention.
I tried so hard to like this book, I really did. But there was just so many things wrong with it… and it just got worse as it went on. I truly don’t understand how she expected us to believe Michael was 50something and Kayla was 20something…. These two had the maturity level of teenagers! And that proposal? My god that was awful
I NEED MOREEEE! Ughhh, so perfect. This couple is so fun to read. The banter is so perfect and the problems they have are so real. Can't wait for book 3!
i like that this is a series of novellas about the same person. I mean, i'm interested in the friends, but that would be the way i've known it to be done, so this is refreshing. It's nice to read more about a relationship i was already invested in, and it's cool to see there were more things to say and the choice to do so in three novellas instead of one book gives more freedom to skip parts and only show us the exciting moments.
The second book of this romance trilogy, staring a billionaire hunk and a vivacious greeting card writer. A Super light and cheesy read, in between a few heavier books for me. Loved it.
Unfortunately, this one was not as interesting as the first part. Some funny dialogues but I didn't really connect to the characters. I get the first book was about them meeting and developing their relationship. That was cute and funny and interesting. This.. well, this was about Michael buying a basketball team and the effects on his normal schedule. Some cute moments between Michael and Kayla though.
Everything that I had issues with in the first book (i.e., a ton of plot happening off-page) was WAY better in book two. WAY better. I mean, this book so captured my attention, and it was a fun, sexy, quick read that kept me hooked start-to-finish. The whole thing was cute, and I loved the idea of the MC's internal struggle. As someone who loves romance characters who actually DON'T have serious fights, I actually really loved how the main character and her love interest had gone from meeting to lasting love without a serious fight in book one, so to see the expansion of that love story here, and to see our heroine grappling with some of those feelings in book two? That was a complete win in my book. To me, this book captured all of the fun details of mixed feelings and mixed communication and ill-timed everything in the best ways, leaving plenty of room for sweetness from start to finish. A sweet middle chapter that won me over in ways that book one didn't, and that had me itching to pick up the final installment. I'm so glad I ordered both book 2 and 3 at once!
Sequel to So Sweet, probably the second of three novellas according to the author. Both have had happy endings with no cliffhangers--subsequent parts just continue the story. It's a very cute, fluffy read with some steamy sex. This part takes the couple through their engagement and the difficulties inherent in merging two lives. Really nailed it as far as I was concerned. Great read, highly recommend.
This story was Xtra with a side of candy floss Lol. Get it. The most unromantic proposal in history. I mean this two have established they love each other. Come on, you could have done it way better. Ass. Then, of course, people don't expect him to be engaged to our wonderful Black MC. Love how they sort through their issues. Plus throw in puppies to die for. Onto the next book.
I liked the first one a tiny bit more, but overall this was another fantastic feelgood-story. Exactly what I am in the mood for right now. Love both of the MC's and the side characters!
the first half was really sweet and charming, but it went downhill in the second half. aside from all the boring business stuff, he proposes by handing her a prenup (?!), she’s upset from then on but lies and sulks and is petty and childish, they have sex instead of talking, and he’s framed as the issue for not making decisions with her while she gets a pass for bottling everything up and making it worse.
content/trigger warnings; ableism, kissing, explicit sexual content, mentions of parent with alzheimer’s, gun violence mentioned, murder mentioned, racism, misogyny,
rep; kayla (mc) is fat, black, and bisexual. queer side characters of color.
there’s a sex scene that made me uncomfortable. she leaves the room, he grabs her arm to stop her and kisses her, she’s not really into it, thinks about how the kiss “made everything worse” and made her feel “trapped,” she pushes him away then literally runs away. he follows her, traps her up against the wall, and she thinks about how she isn’t sure if she wants to pull him close or push him away “but he made the decision for the both of us” by getting on his knees and going down on her. and then the sex continues and she’s no longer hesitant or anything. and i just gotta ask. what the fuck is that? unless it’s a scene that we’re aware of beforehand (which this is not), it’s just not sexy or enjoyable (and doesn’t read as consensual) for one party of a sexual encounter to feel like they can’t get out of it or don’t have a say in what’s going on, especially when they’re upset or angry with the other party. just. no.
This made me feel so anxious about my future marriage if I will have one. Damn, all that legal process and shit that you need to file and do? My lazy ass is already groaning in pain. But, I loved how this book showed a different situation that is not shown in other books where partners get to talk about their prenup and legal shits before marriage. I'm still kind of surprised that I liked this series and Michael because I hate rich people so much. I think I loved how Rebekah Weatherspoon gives life to her characters and in this case, humanizes Michael, and shows that despite him being rich, that is not his personality. I also loved how this book showed a healthy real fight between couples wherein they are communicating with each other and understanding each other, and not being problematic and toxic. I appreciate how transparent they are to each other and how good of a role model for couples Michael and Kayla are. This is also my favorite book in the series! Very adorable and highly recommended!
Did anyone really think that I wouldn't have immediately started reading this once I was done with So Sweet? Yeah, I didn't think so. I dove right in after posting about the first book and while Amanda (@talk_about_swoon on IG) did give me a heads up that there was more drama in here than the last, that didn't stop me. One thing about an HEA is that you never see the couple get a real "couple moment" after the HEA. Don't get me wrong, I crave an HEA in my books, but there's just something about seeing a couple having a real moment - where things aren't all rosy, but they work through it. That may not be escapism at its finest - and not what I normally go for - but it was done perfectly in this case. Yup, the third book is on the Kindle waiting for me to open it... Will I wait until morning? We'll see...
4.5 stars This story continues the relationship between Kayla and Micheal that we were introduced to in book 1. It was good to check in with them and see how things have changed. I enjoyed how they were both honest about their feelings (eventually), had adult conversations and never wavered in their support of one another. Their connection is obvious and I like that they’re also surrounded by really good friends and family. And, as one expects in a Rebekah Witherspoon book, the sex is hot and inventive! I’m definitely looking forward to book 3 and reading how these 2 continue to navigate their new reality.
This book allowed for better development of the story between the two characters, in the first book there is an establishment of who they are as a vague description, but this book brings on more action and story. Purchasing an NBA team, a prenup proposal and a lot of conflicting emotions makes for a great story. I could definitely feel how Kayla felt after that anti climactic proposal but at the same time I was like DUUUDEE you love him so who cares!! Also, the puppies were a huge hit for me, it was definitely leading towards a cute couple, who get married have dogs and never have kids kind of story line. I really like the way it concluded their little family bubble.
In my last review, when I said the hurdles only lasted for a few pages, it wasn't a call for a book long fight. I sadly barely liked this follow-up. Both MC's were so annoying to me.
Throughout the whole book, I wanted to force Kayla to get out of her head and communicate with her partner. She seemed unhappy through the entire story which didn't make it great for me as a reader. More moments of fun and intimacy would've greatly helped me connect with the couple a lot more.
I truly hope this turns out to be a great character arch where Kayla learns that she doesn't have to take care of everyone at her expense. In the next book, I would like to see her speak up and take the space she needs.
This is the novella I needed! Kayla and Michael's story is just getting better. I'm going to be sad when I read the final book in their story. The last chapter is what gutted me. Michael's vulnerability and being scared of not being enough. Girl, I was sobbing like ugly crying. The way Rebekah Weatherspoon writes the importance of communication in a relationship is high key chef's kiss perfection. I will be rereading this book forever and ever. I needed this story to warm me up. Ugh soooo good!
Compared to the previous book, there were definitely more emotions articulated. I did not understand why Kayla was upset about the prenuptial agreement, though. I thought that was necessary, though they could have arranged it together. I did not care much about the NBA stuffs, but all the business made sense to brew the small conflict of the book. Holger became yet another favorite character of the series. I love the gap moe and his aversion-turned-affection towards the puppies.
Again just like with the first book it’s a cute and sexy story about a girl in her 20s falling in love with an older rich man. I do enjoy a book that is just a love story, no deep rooted trauma, no overly dramatic plot. Just two people navigating a new relationship. The author really shows her range with this one because it’s not her usual style (compared to some other books I’ve read like Haven, Rafe or the gym series). It’s just a sexy cute story and I love that
It was great to be back with Kayla and Michael! The prose and characterizations remain excellent, and it was so great to see a romance with an established couple where the drama/plot wasn't based on any misunderstandings followed by door-slamming or anything silly and convoluted, just some very messy and understandable and real feelings. Sex scenes remain hot, too. Already started book 3!
