This book makes me wonder if A.H. Holt might actually be a time traveler. Highly entertaining and completely realistic, this story will keep you reading until the end. An excellent book in form and content.

William Dale Gantry is a man of both ethics and decency. Wandering through the mighty US, surviving by his wits and his many talents he comes to the Texas panhandle just as the XIT Ranch is beginning to shut down its operations and selling off land. Due to the efforts of the land company the area is being overrun by swindlers and landseekers who are hoping to make their fortune. Land excursion trains bring more and more everyday.

The streets of Friona were filled with enough gossip to enlighten Gantry and he rode on to the small town of Bovina. There he ran into a beautiful damsel in distress, and took care of an overly pushy land speculator for her, letting her and her young son go on their way. The incident spun the wheel of fate. After a companionable meeting with the Sheriff, Gantry headed his horse south.

Pitching his meagre camp in a draw, Gantry has the beginnings of an unfamiliar feeling creep over him; a sense of home. It is a beautiful area and there is a strong possibility a cattle ranch could make it. He shelves the idea and moves on in the morning.

Events conspire to make it easier for Gantry to leave the area and head into New Mexico as he had originally planned. However, he doesn't. In fact, Gantry ends up befriending Sheriff Dan Sterling, who realizes that his very large dark stranger is anything but a lawbreaker. Slowly the outcasts in the area come together around Gantry and a life off the road becomes more than an errant thought. A beautiful young woman catches his eye and his heart and suddenly his plans for the future are solidified.

This is a smooth read that is extremely difficult to put down for any length of time. As usual, Holt delivers a solid plot and sub plotting that definitely keep you wondering just which way the tale will turn. I would highly suggest this for lovers of Westerns and just of good tales in general

Historical note: "Ten in Texas" is named for the XIT ranch. A huge spread, the working cattle ranch covered over 3,000, 000 acres and included areas of ten different counties which is where the name came from, and the brand 'XIT' was developed to deter rustlers. Apparently, this may have perpetuated a myth that XIT actually meant 'ten in Texas' or it may not have.

Anne Holt did a fantastic job.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not just because it was a story about the land that I love. She tells the tale of how a Dukes Mixture of nationalities and a mixture of educations came together to form the Great State of Texas. That is the same way these Great United States came to be. The main character in the story is like a magnet as he rides into the small town of Bovina Texas. Folks are drawn to him as he does what they can't do but know that it needs to be done. He is one of these larger than life kind of people. Standing six two and weighing two hundred and fifty pounds of hard muscle. Thank God he is on the right side of the fence.

Well written, uninspired.

Reasonable read, a little disjointed. Didn't flow real well. Backstory weak, tried to be surprising but didn't make it. Probably won't read more by this author.

William Dale Gantry, a man born in Virginia is wandering the wild west in search of something, what he doesn't really know. Camping overnight in a draw in the Texas panhandle, he suddenly feels like he may have just found it. Will makes some friends, decides to buy some land and build a ranch. Along the way, he meets a widowed woman with a young son and falls in love. But there are a couple of scores he needs to settle and there is a lot more to this story. A. H. Holt spins a charming western yarn in a somewhat unconventional style and melodious voice that is sure to entertain you. If you like westerns pick this one up.

An AHH. Western Adventure/The Panhandle of Texas/An Old Ranch to Sell to Farmers/A Few Honest Men That Saved the,Day

AHH. has. penned a western adventure that jumps right out of the newspapers in the state of Texas. The XIT, an English owned ranch, would not sell as a total package. The
New owners of the ranch broke the XIT. into 500 acre increments that sold for $5000 dollars with no returns. This situation brought out the good, the bad and the ugly in all men especially those looking to get rich quick. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS

Would highly recommend

Never would have guessed a female author but she portrays the men as well or even better than male authors.
I love the way there is a central male figure who pulls together the skills and talents of many.
I'd love to be a person like that.

Predictable

Numerous opportunities existed to enhance the story but we're overlooked whereas other relatively unimportant parts of the story dragged on. Average at best.
