Rookie K-9 These lawmen solve the toughest cases with the help of their brave canine partners
Although I have been a published author since the mid 1980s, I have been writing women's Christian fiction almost exclusively since 1999.
There is a longer, more detailed bio on my website so there's no need for me to repeat all that here. Right now, I write for all three Love Inspired lines, Romance, Suspense and Historical. I'm delighted to have been included that broadly and besides, it keeps me so busy that I stay out of trouble. Well, mostly.
You'll find me on the LI Historical blog as well as other LI features. If I try to do much more I won't have time to write my books!
This is two novellas featuring the Rookie K-9 Unit Officers and their Dogs.

Holiday High Alert by Lenora Worth
Officer Dalton West is partnered with Luna, a brindle mutt. Dalton is a single dad. His daughter, Maisy, attends the daycare center owned and run by Josie Callahan. When Josie receives threatening notes and is stalked, Dalton vows to protect Josie and the children she loves and cares for.
I have not read any of the K-9 series, but I found these two stories to be well written with very likeable characters. My favorites, though, are the dogs in the K-9 Unit. No dogs were injured in the writing of these stories.
These are great Christmas stories for those that like a little Christmas gift wrapped around a good mystery. Although a part of a series, these are stand-alone and need not be read in any particular order.
My thanks to the authors / Harlequin (US & Canada) / Netgalley. The opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Rookie K-9 Unit Christmas contains two novellas: Surviving Christmas and Holiday High Alert. I liked how the characters from the first novella were in the second one, as well.
I loved the K-9 dogs -- they were amazing. I also found the mysteries to be interesting. There were a couple times the story felt unrealistic, which I didn't like.
All in all, I enjoyed this book and am glad I read it.

K-9 HOLIDAY RESCUE Surviving Christmas by Valerie Hansen When single dad Sean Murray returns from a war zone and discovers someone is following him, he turns to his old friend K-9 officer Zoe Trent for help. But as the threat escalates, can Zoe and her police dog find whoever is menacing Sean and his son…and make sure this Christmas isn't their last?
My thoughts: Surviving Christmas is a real sweet romantic suspense. Sean and Zoe used to be friends, and he is the only one he can think of to turn to when invaders break into his St. Louis apartment and attempt to kill him. He heads off to Arizona to hangout with Zoe and perhaps get matched with a service dog for his PTSD or for his son's disabilities due to lack of oxygen after a near drowning. But as per normal with these stories, the assassins follow Sean to Arizona and make more attempts on his life, even dragging kidnapping the boy into it.
I loved reading about the service dogs and might have learned a trip or two about handling hyper dogs (I'll have to try it on ours to see if it works). I enjoyed reading Surviving Christmas and loved the way Ms. Hansen wrapped the story up. Holiday High Alert by Lenora Worth After a cryptic note appears in the playground at Josie Callahan's daycare center, rookie K-9 officer Dalton West vows to protect Josie and the kids she loves—especially his daughter, Maisy. And with a stalker closing in, the widower and his four-legged partner are all that stand between Josie and a deadly Christmas.
My thoughts: I enjoyed reading Holiday High Alert by Ms. Worth. It was nice to read a story centered around characters that appeared in the first story in this collection and seeing how they tied together.
There was a little *unfinished* feel about this story, I would've liked to see it continue a little longer and have some relationship differences resolved. However, the suspense was great and I didn't guess whodunit until "he" was revealed. This story was a little less stressful than most of the romantic suspense I've read recently, but still very good.
Overall thoughts... I enjoyed this collection and recommend it for fans of romantic suspense. A great Christmassy read. 4 stars.
Surviving Christmas by Valerie Hansen is a delightful Christian romantic thriller about second chances and trust. Suffering from PTSD, veteran Sean sees danger everywhere, but it is not always in his head. He has to learn to trust others, his own instincts and God, whom he believed had abandoned him. "There had been a time when he'd believed God was guiding him... now he felt adrift." Whenever we feel adrift we must cling to our anchor God who will always guide us home safely. The novel shows the partnership of man and dog, and man and God. Both can work well when they are in tune and both can be trusted. There is the theme of healing - sometimes mental, sometimes physical or spiritual. Sometimes we grip a situation so hard that we block healing. We need to loosen our grip and let the healing flow. A delightful read with all the elements we could wish for in an entertaining tale. Holiday High Alert by Lenora Worth is a marvellous Christian romantic mystery which I really enjoyed. There are themes of revenge, power, love and hope. The love of money is the root of all evil. Money can motivate people to behave in some despicable ways. "People... will do anything especially when it involves money." Money can be used for good but the love of money corrupts. Past events may also become warped and twist our way of thinking and behaving. The novel is also about love and protection. The love of a father is strong. The pull to protect motivates behaviour. Likewise the K9 unit is also trained to protect. Our father God can be trusted. When all seems bleak, He will never leave us. He is not without power but because of free will, there is evil in the world. "He [God] watched and He cried because God hates evil." Whatever we face, God walks alongside us. There are burdens in the novel, some we were never meant to carry. We need to give our burdens to God and press into Him. If we know God, we can have hope. "We have to hold out hope." Hope that life will be better with God alongside us. A delightful story with elements for all to enjoy. Rookie K9 Unit Christmas was a wonderful read. Both stories were linked by their characters and had similar themes of trust, hope, corruption by power and money, survival, love and faith. Delightful read together or as stand-alones. I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.

Two Christmas novellas that both have a similar basic information - a single dad with broken souls trying to survive with everyday life, finds solace in their faith in God, and fight against the evil lurking around trying to harm them and their loved ones. Even though the stories does have a similar baseline, they are both unique and original with their plot.
In Surviving Christmas both Sean and his son have heartwrenching histories that have left marks on their body and soul. Zoe is like the beam of light in their lives, and the old friendship takes a new meaning as they are fighting to keep Sean alive and his son from being kidnapped. This story touched my heart, and I enjoyed it immensely. The action is fast, the danger was constant, the development of the relationship sweet and deeply felt. Sean's struggle to find his footing again after military service, not only with his job, health, and his son's health but in every possible way including his faith in God was poignant and true.
In Holiday High Alert Dalton and his daughter Maisy are still healing from the death of wife and mother. The hurt and pain little Maisy carries inside were heartbreaking. Josie has been the safe harbor in Maisy's life, and now that is set in danger by life-threatening messages and action. Josie and Dalton were outright cute in this novella. The feelings that had been growing inside them started to burst out like there was no holding back. The danger is real, the threats evident, the consequences actual. I loved how the whole unit rallied around Josie to help her and keep her safe. A heartwarming romance mixed with tension and peril from the crimes.
Lots of deep emotions, from love and joy to fear and doubt, great characters with deep faith in God and His guidance in life, good teamwork with the K-9 unit and four legged friends that make the stories even more delightful if that's possible. ~ Four Spoons with a teaspoon on the side
When single dad Sean Murray returns from a war zone and discovers someone is following him, he turns to his old friend K-9 officer Zoe Trent for help. But as the threat escalates, can Zoe and her police dog find whoever is menacing Sean and his son…and make sure this Christmas isn't their last?
My thoughts: I enjoyed learning about the many uses for service dogs. They're not just for leading the blind or police use. The suspense in this one ratchets up to the final showdown. Can Zoe and Freya protect Sean and his son from an unknown threat that keeps stalking and trying to kill Sean? Valerie Hansen never disappoints and putting her in a collection with Lenora Worth is brilliant! Suspense readers will love this one!
Holiday High Alert by Lenora Worth
After a cryptic note appears in the playground at Josie Callahan's daycare center, rookie K-9 officer Dalton West vows to protect Josie and the kids she loves—especially his daughter, Maisy. And with a stalker closing in, the widower and his four-legged partner are all that stand between Josie and a deadly Christmas.
My thoughts: Both Josie and Dalton are leery of getting involved romantically with anyone. Dalton's daughter, Maisey doesn't have that problem. She loves Miss Josie and would love to see her with her Daddy. when Josie's past comes back to bite her, can Dalton and his dog keep her safe?
I love this series! Sean knows it isn't just his PTSD making him paranoid when people break into his house and talk about killing him. He gets in a good shot then takes his son and runs. Zoe is the one person he knows he can trust and he runs to her and her new home. Zoe is fresh out of K-9 training and has the idea to set Sean up with a service dog. She and his son hit it off but there is no doubting that someone is after Sean. Josie loves keeping her kids at the daycare. She would never do anything to put them in harms way. When she and Maisy are the last two at the daycare and someone tries to get in, Dalton (Maisy's father) gets involved. As much as Josie doesn't want to think about the past, that is the only thing that she believes could have brought trouble to her doorstep. I loved Zoe and Sean also Josie and Dalton. I think Sean's son was by far my favorite character. Well, except maybe Maisy. Being back in the town and seeing old characters (friends) is wonderful. These authors do a great job in keeping you invested in the stories. The dogs are awesome and I love them being heroes in these stories as well. I cannot wait to read more about what happens in this 'quiet' little town. Absolutely a 4/5 for me. Quick wonderful additions to the series.
Thank you to the publisher for the review copy of this book (via netgalley). I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
This is a good read about two local law enforcement officers with the K-9 unit. It’s interesting to see how the K9 and officers interact with one another and how they do their job.
Reading Sean’s story you kind of get dropped in the middle and learn the story through Sean’s PTSD and his current life situation. You don’t get a lot of background on what happened with his marriage or with Patrick. You get present day and have Patrick who is now considered a special needs child and a father who is suffering from OTSD but wants to be normal for his son. Sean learns that he is preventing Patrick from developing to his full potential. Can he let his guard down and co tell his fear enough to see Patrick blossom? Maisy and Zoe are great for the boys but will they let them in? I felt that Zoe and Sean has a past relationship but you don’t really hear what happened so it’s kinda like their love blooms quickly.
As for Dalton and Josie they both have a past. Can Dalton let go of his fear and begin the true healing process from losing his wife? Can Josie trust him enough with her past to help him catch whoever is after her? Will she lose everything she has worked so hard to build in her new life? The relationship for Dalton and Josie sneaks up and smacks you! But at the end of the day God is in control.
The pluses - the Patrick character and the Maisy character, both children. Excitement. Dogs. Christmas. The interactions between the dogs and Patrick.
It felt too heavy-handed when Zoe tried to try to coerce Sean socially into taking his son to church, by forcefully saying that he needed to meet other day care kids there, and that other cops attended. It was too much like emotional blackmail, especially coming from someone in authority over him, who would influence whether or not he got a service dog. It also reduced church from a deeper meaning to mere social networking. I suppose those things could've been listed as added bonuses, but to try to force them on Sean that way ... ugh. Made me grimace. Going to church can be good; coercing someone to go to church can backfire. Most people don't like to be coerced into anything.
I found it hard to believe that the villains would try the exact same failed abduction attempt a second time.
I also found it hard to believe that the mastermind acted that way, particularly because of Sean's reasons on the matter. Not enough of a motive, or not realistic enough insanity to counterbalance a lack of reasonable motivation.
We were not given enough clues to know in advance whodunit. It was just a surprise at the end, and not a very believable one.
As in so many of these books, the beliefs of the main characters are vague. Sean seemed to believe in a vague higher power that occasionally intervened in the course of humankind, but that belief was not tied to more usual church beliefs in any way, although he did attend, reluctantly, with Zoe.
Holiday High Alert: 3 stars
Pluses - I continued to enjoy the Maisy character and her confidences to Josie. The story did have plenty of action, and it was clean. The daycare seemed like a nice place, and, for that matter, so did the town.
But I tell my kids that I like the stories I read or watch to have more depth to them than just excitement, and the novella's short length prohibited developing deep characters. Plus, it's not fair of me to choose the book for a "light" Christmas read and then complain because there isn't much depth.
I finally am beginning to understand the attraction for these types of romantic suspense books, or the subgenre of law-enforcement romance - the feeling of being protected, which apparently the authors and readers mingle with the feeling of being cherished. And well, I suppose that the feeling of being protected might be a start to a relationship, but to me, it feels like a scant start. There's so much more that's important in a relationship and in characters who are capable of sustained relationship. It made me want to roll my eyes.
Law-enforcement protects people even where there's no physical attraction, too. It made me wonder if Josie just needed to slow down on the developing relationship with Dalton to see if the relationship still held once the traumatic protection part of his role during this crisis had ended. I suppose a lot of people fall in love with their rescuers, just like a lot of people fall in love with their doctors. People can even begin to feel dependent on their captors and fall in love with them, too, in the Stockholm syndrome. There needed to be more to it than protection and physical attraction.
At this point, I have to wonder what the authors, Valerie Hansen and Lenora Worth, had against in-law relationships that both stories in this book portrayed such malevolent in-law relationships. Or perhaps in-laws are just convenient, stereotypical frustrations. I won't say whether or not the in-laws were guilty, just that their relationships were troubled.
Also, once again, I felt like the villain either had insufficient motive or insufficient insanity for those actions. It was an accident and Josie's role in it was only tangential. I do realize that people in extreme loss sometimes look around for someone to blame even with thin reasoning, but that just wasn't rational at all.
Again, there weren't enough clues to figure out whodunit, just a listing of what this or that suspect was removed from the list for whatever reason, until we were only down to two. Then one. I am beginning to realize that romantic suspense is different from romantic mystery in that a significant number of books there's no attempt to evaluate or set up clues, and no way to figure it out before-hand. It is more suspenseful in wondering whether someone will get killed or hurt, and less of a puzzle over whodunit.
This story did have more than the whisper of faith in the prior story. However ... it may have muddied the waters rather than making things clear. "God gives us that grace. He wants to help us, but He expects us to work hard on our own." There's a confusing balance there. It sounds like "God helps those who help themselves," which isn't Biblical. God often helps those who haven't been helping themselves, who don't deserve it, who can't find a way out. THAT is His grace, and it goes beyond just the extra, added boost to our own efforts. It goes all the way to seeking the lost sheep who willfully wandered away, and all the way to dying for sinful people, for enemies who hated Him, to reconcile them with God.
"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." - Romans 5:8, NIV
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast." - Ephesians 2:8-9, NIV
But, it was unclear what Dalton was talking about, when he told Maisy that "God gives us that grace. He wants to help us, but He expects us to work hard on our own." He probably wasn't talking about salvation, about God's stepping into people's lives to work His wonders. It sounded like - perhaps - he was merely talking about working hard protecting people. And yes, the Bible does have a great deal to say about diligence, especially in Proverbs - as well as walking in-step with faith, in turning around to make our actions match our beliefs. But working hard, and even working hard plus believing doesn't always guarantee results, something they both already knew.
I really enjoyed Surviving Christmas. I loved that even if this was a brief book (Novella) it had loads going on to keep the readers interested. I loved getting to see that bit of progression of the son and seeing him improve with the help of new friends and the K9 dog. I liked seeing Sean questioning and gaining his faith back. I loved seeing the connection between Sean and josie. Then lets not forget the drama and suspense going on with who was coming after Sean I mean from page on things were constantly going on and his PSTD left him and those around him question if whats going on is really paranoia or if someone really has something out for him. Overall a really good suspenseful novella. Really packed a punch.
Just finished Holiday High Alert and it was pretty great as well. I loved getting to see the character's brief lives and how they deal with the cryptic messages and how everything gets solved in the end. I love how the author keeps the readers on their toes. I really enjoyed this perfect for small reading escapes I needs to get through this stressful holiday season.
I enjoyed these two romantic suspense stories. Yes, it may seem far-fetched that in each one, someone is under threat by someone they don't know. But that along with the police dogs is the premise of the series. By this stage the main running series crime thread has been resolved. I did think this book talked too much about it for those who haven't read that book. Spoiler for you! On the other hand you might enjoy the police dogs and romances so much that you'll read it anyway.
A Belgian shepherd and a large crossbreed are the dogs featured in each story, and the tales involve children - a child minder is at risk and her young charge's single dad is a police officer; another single dad is a civilian and turns to a lady K9 trainer for help. At Christmas in the cold and empty country of Arizona. The romances are suitable for any age.
I downloaded an ARC from Net Galley and this is an unbiased review.
Final book of he Rookie K-9 Unit series and it was a great read. I finished it in one day and really enjoyed it. I hope there will be more K-9 series coming out. I know there is be more already out n print but I want MORE. The Christmas book was really good. The two stories were great. Surviving Christmas reunites Sean Murray with his best friend and college confidant Zoe Trent. Sean is a soldier with PTSD and in search of a service dog and Zoe is a rookie trainee with the Desert Valley K-9 Training Center. Sean has become the victim of an assassin and it is Zoe’s job to protect him and his son, Patrick. Holiday High Alert introduces Josie Callahan and Dalton West. Josie runs the local day care center and is being threatened. Dalton is a K-9 officer whose daughter, Maisy, is a student at the day care. Both stories were fast-paced and full of action.
These two holiday-themed novellas were cute and well done. I love dogs, so the idea of a romance with K-9 cops was appealing. You get two romance stories in this book, one with a female K-9 officer who falls for a single dad, and one with a male K-9 officer who falls in love with a child care owner. So both stories also involve kids/family and both also have romantic suspense subplots that involves a threat/stalker/danger.
Both stories were enjoyable and felt long enough to be satisfying while being relatively short reads without a lot of filler. I like reading shorter bites at Christmas time, so I liked the format. I would read this author again.
It's always good to catch up to the characters of a series, and these two short stories, while introducing semi-new characters, was good with the catch-up. The first story, Surviving Christmas, was wonderful, but not as good as I would have hoped by one of my favorite authors. Quite honestly, the second story, Holiday High Alert, was the best of the two. The little girl was absolutely adorable and so grown-up for her age. I loved the connection between her and the young boy from the previous story. She takes on the role of mother not only to the younger children but her father as well, and it's a sweet second story. Can read as a stand-alone, but recommended to read the rest of the series!
Two Christmas novellas that feature our K-9 friends. Story 1 features Sean and his son Patrick. Sean suffers from PTSD and is caring for Patrick who is recovering from almost drowning. Zoe is a friend prepared to help. Story 2 is about a widower and his daughter who are recovering from the loss of the rest of their family. Both deeply set in the church and a strong faith in God. Great reads that aren't too long with satisfying story and endings.
Love the strong character in this series and the way the authors blend them together. You can read alone but I like them so much I usually read all of them. Part of a series but I like to read all of them and get to know all the characters. I find it amazing so many authors can coordinate their stories and keep the story believable. A little love and lots of action.
Surviving Christmas by Valerie Hensen is part of the K9 series The story starts with a lot of action to get your attention. I have really enjoyed the series. And this book was no exception. Sean has returned from war to take care of his son after his wife dies. The relationship is between Sean and his son Patrick was so heartwarming. Sean has reached out to his best friend Zoe for help as he is concerned about Patrick’s safety after someone breaks into his house. Because he is dealing with after effects of the war he doesn’t totally trust his instincts. Zoe is a character you're absolutely going to love. She strong, funny and just a good person. The author created interesting and witty dialogue between her and Sean. The dogs are always a great addition to the story. The author brings them alive and they feel like additional characters in the story. Freya, a Belgian Tervuren was awesome in how she took to Patrick immediately. The story is full of action and heartwarming scenes.
Holiday High Alerty by Lenora Worth is the second story in the book and a continuation of the K9 series. I was thrilled that Josie has her own story. We have come to love all of these characters and they finally got their happy ending. Macy is an absolutely adorable little girl with a mothering instinct. I love how she and Patrick bonded. We got a sneak peek at Dalton from the previous books. We get to find the backstory of how his wife was killed and the guilt that both he and Macy are dealing with as a result. Josie's background was interesting too. She is a widow. It's a short story with a lot of action and some heartwarming scenes between Macy and her dad Dalton. I would definitely recommend both books if you enjoy a romantic mystery sprinkled with some faith and surrounded by holiday cheer. I received this book from NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review. You can see my full review at More Than a Review dot com where I rate the level of sex, violence, language and drug/alcohol use in books.
Surviving Christmas Sean is a returning Vet and someone is trying to kill him. Sean and his little boy have already been through a lot. Sean was in the military and was returning home when his son had an accident, Patrick almost drowned in a swimming pool at his grandmothers. The vehicle Sean was riding in was blown up by an IED. While all this was going on Patrick's mother overdosed on drugs.
So the book starts out with a whirlwind of events and continues through the whole book.
This is a book that you won't want to miss. i really enjoyed it and was on the edge of my seat through some of it.
Rookie K-9 Unit Christmas is two novellas featuring two new K-9 units. Both of the story are very sweet and also filled with Christian references. I did not realize that when I accepted an ARC of the book for a honest review. I read both stories. They have some very nice characters with some problems that reflect some current issues. They also have some very cute and interesting dogs. If you are looking for a easy and sweet Christmas romance this is a good choice.
I enjoyed this edition of the Rookie K-9 series which included two books. In the first one, somebody is trying to kill a man who has just returned from a war zone; in the second, someone is targeting the manager of a day care center. It was interesting to see how the authors worked out and concluded their plots.
There are two great stories in this wonderful book. I started reading and couldn't put it down till the last page. In the first story Sean is in more danger now than when he was in a war zone. In the second someone is stalking Josie and threatening the day care center she runs. Wonderful book.
This book was absolutely amazing and I truly enjoyed both of them. The dogs in these books are amazing and I can't get over the kind of training that goes into one. The stories between their handlers and their new loves was equally amazing.
