Mary Smith, known to everyone around as Granny Smith, sees flashing lights in the middle of the night and looks out her window to see police at her neighbor’s house in Granny Smith Investigates by G.M. Dobbs. A resident of her village in Wales took her dog for a walk and discovered the murdered body of Edith Sullivan, Granny’s next door neighbor. The police take Edith’s husband, Stan, in for questioning and treat him as their chief, and perhaps only, suspect. But Granny is certain that Stan could never have killed his wife and determines to clear his name.

This is my first Granny audiobook, I was worried that I will be lost because I haven’t read the first one, I’ve discovered that I was worried for nothing, each book in the Granny series can be read or listened to as a single which is great and Granny’s music taste is awesome.
The book is fun easy to follow, G. M. Dobbs writing is great, coupled with Fiona Thraille narrating the book accomplished a symphony.

In Gary Dobbs' latest book, we have a cozy mystery with the elderly lady and amateur detective known as Granny Smith. Though Smith is her married name and she is indeed a grandmother, she's had the nickname a lot longer. It comes for her love of the same titled apple.
Granny follows in that long tradition of amateur detectives and is even referred to by a cop a couple of times in the book as Miss Maple on steroids. Though an older woman, she is as different from the Christie character as one could be. Miss Marple was a prim and proper lady of her time and Granny is a pipe smoking, heavy metal listening woman of hers. Oh, she does the grandmother things: baking cookies for sales and tending to her grandchildren.
And she also gets caught up in a murder investigation when a close friend is found murdered and the police thinks the woman's husband responsible, a thought completely abhorrent to Granny and others that knew the couple. But some claims to have seen them arguing at the festival shortly before the body was found.
Granny soon manages to point the police in a direction that clears the husband and moves on to finding the murderer and the reason for it all.
Quite enjoyed this one. I read Christie and others of the cozy genre in my younger days, but not so much for many years now. The odd occasional one. that's it. But I've grown to expect good things from Gary Dobbs whatever the the type of story he's writing.

It had been a while since I have read the likes of the character Miss Marple from Agatha Christie works. Now Granny Smith has fulfilled that void in my reading life. Granny Smith is not exactly old to be a Granny by heart but irrespective of that, everyone has been calling her Granny. She is a young at heart woman who has a trait to be curious about everything that is happening around her. So when her friend Sheila gets engaged to Nigel, who is younger than her, Granny Smith gets suspicious. The following murder in the town makes Granny even more curious and on she follows the clues of the murder, much to the chagrin of Detective Inspector Miskins.
The story then follows Granny Alice Mary Smith into various stages of the mystery in a humorous but intense way. The book is beautifully written and is a pleasure to read. The Miss Marple references are not only in our mind but the author has given in the book too, calling Granny Smith as “Miss Marple on steroids”

I love the idea of this book and really loved the welsh parts and the natural characters. I struggled a bit with the swearing and toilet humor in places but overall this felt like a very genuine and heartfelt story about some wonderfully interesting people!

Clear the decks here comes Granny!
Wonderful! Reminds me of my mother. An outspoken, senior rebel who seeks to clear up the mystery she finds herself in. A simply delightful character who had me chuckling whilst she dealt with the clues surrounding her. An example of the best cozies around.

Pipe Smoking, Metalhead Granny to the Rescue (Audiobook)
This book is definitely not your typical mystery. First, Granny Smith, age 71 on the outside only, is not your prim and proper female detective like Miss Marple or Jessica Fletcher. Second, you do not typically giggle quite so much during most mysteries.

Well narrated by Fiona Thraille with well thought out and enjoyable character voices and excellent inflections and characterizations.
I would definitely read the next adventure of Granny Smith Investigates.

If you are a fan of the humorous cozy then you will love this one. Granny turns sleuth and doesn't care who she upsets in her quest for the truth. Even the Inspector couldn't get the upper hand of Granny and as for poor Dai Twice, the Special Police Constable, well he had no chance!
Granny Smith Investigates is the first book in a series of four, and is a good listen if you want something light and funny.

Narrated by Fiona Thraille, and considering that in the first couple of chapters she had to deal with a Welsh lady talking to a Pakistani man I think she did the job admirably! Her voice is quite suited to the role of Granny Smith, so many narrators bestow any female over 65 with a high, frail quavery and annoying voice, not Fiona, she did Granny proud.

Fiona Thraille does a wonderful job narrating this cozy mystery.Granny Smith is an older lady living in Wales.She's ecentric ,always looking for an argument and grumpy.She is also'Miss Marple on Steroids' and can solve a crime even if she nearly gets killed her self.A town girl,Sheila is about to get married.Something seems strange with the groom to be and his adult 'daughter'.There is also a murder in town.Though the local constable wishes she'd go away,she doesn't and persists until she finds the truth.It is a fun read!

This was the first I've read this author and if others are as good, it won't be the last.
I loved it from the beginning. The way that Granny Smith got her "nickname", the pipe....you name it. She was not only an unusual character, but one that you'd never expect to find doing the things she did. The book was funny, interesting, well written and made me want more. Definitely a hit with me. I recommend it highly for those who like a humorous mystery. Great!!

"One apple that improves with age"
Let's dispel one misapprehension, okay? Granny Smith is nothing like Miss Marple and G.M. Dobbs is nothing like Agatha Christie. Having said that, this is fun to read. The Welsh elements, the humour, the familiar characters and a well-developed plot combine to produce a better than average cozy mystery. What more could you ask for? Apart from the next in the series?

Granny is playing amateur sleuth in uncovering the facts behind the murder of her friend Edith. Edith's husband Stanley is being questioned but Granny doesn't for one minute believe he's guilty.

The eccentric Welsh pensioner gets her teeth (usually gripping a corn-cob pipe) into solving the mysterious murder of a friend in the village. Despite being ignored and warned off by the police, she persists. This delightful short story makes great family reading with plenty of humour. I can just imagine a nice TV comedy series from this.

I loved this book. Granny Smith is not the usual detective/amateur sleuth, she is an "unique character". The writing style of the author is very entertaining. I found myself laughing out loud numerous times. In my eyes the first half of the book was better than the second half. But I enjoyed it and I definitely will read more of Granny Smith. A book I will certainly recommend to friends.

It took me awhile to get into this book. I promise it was nothing to do with the writing. It was my attachment to The Miss Marple by Agatha Christie and Granny Smith's strap line Miss Marple on steroids. The only thing the two might have in common is age.
It's a good cosy mystery. Get it, read it, love it. An enjoyable book.

This was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed the main character and the setting. I also thought Fiona Thraille's reading of the audiobook was delightful, so I hope they do more for the series.
