This is a translation of Clarifying the Jewel Rosary of the Profound Fivefold Path, by The second victorious one, Kunga Ratna Chökyi Gyaltsen Pal Sangpo
For students who want to become enlightened, this book can serve as their path. It explains everything, from how to take the very first step, all the way to full enlightenment. This path is called Lam Rim, a gradual path to enlightenment.
Lam Rim was taught by the Buddha. These teachings were eventually transmitted to Tilopa, Naropa, Marpa, and Milarepa. Then, in the 11th century a disciple of Milarepa, named Lord Gampopa (1079-1153), managed to learn all of the various lineage's versions of these teaching. He then took on the daunting task of combining these teachings into a single fivefold system (path). It was Lord Gampopa's heart student, Pakdru Dorje Gyalpo (1110-1170), that changed the name to "The Profound Fivefold Path of Mahamudra."
Pakdru Dorje Gyalpo's heart student, Lord Jigten Sumgön (1143-1217) founded the Drikung Kagyu order and taught Mahamudra extensively. Lord Jigten Sumgön was one of the greatest scholars of Tibet. He was so exceptional he was often called the second Nāgārjuna. Eventually The second victorious one, Kunga Ratna Chökyi Gyaltsen Pal Sangpo, a reincarnation of Lord Jigten Sumgön (1475-1527), became the 15th successor of Lord Jigten Sumgön. He wrote many texts, one of them was Clarifying the Jewel Rosary of the Profound Fivefold Path.
The particular value of this work is that Kunga Ratna Chökyi Gyaltsen Pal Sangpo did not add anything to the teachings he received. So, this text contains the pure transmissions from Lord Jigten Sumgön and Pakdru Dorje Gyalpo of the Buddha's teachings.
* NOTE * Kunga Ratna Chökyi Gyaltsen Pal Sangpo is the authors name as it appears on his text Clarifying the Jewel Rosary of the Profound Fivefold Path
