Δουλειές με φούντες
Νόστιμη, γοητευτική, πενηντάρα και χήρα, η Γκρέις βρίσκεται ξαφνικά μόνη στη ζωή. Με τρόπο πραγματικά απροσδόκητο, χάνει τον άντρα της, γόνο μιας από τις πιο παλιές οικογένειες της Κορνουάλης. Η συνάντησή της με τον γοητευτικό Ζακ Σεβαλιέ θα προσθέσει μία ακόμη ανατροπή στη ζωή της και θα της γνωρίσει το πραγματικό πάθος του έρωτα. Συνεχίζοντας τον σχολιασμό βαρετών βιβλίων, η πρωταγωνίστρια του Saving Grace (δουλειές με φούντες στα ελληνικά) είναι μια γιαγιά που ασχολιόταν με την κηπουρική μια ζωή και όταν πέθανε ο άντρας της, της άφησε τα χρέη του και αυτή σαν Walter White των φτωχών αποφασίζει να καλλιεργήσει Κάνναβη για να ξεχρεώσει. Το βιβλίο υποτίθεται είναι αστείο επειδή ξες, είναι γιαγιά και άσχολείται με τους μπάφους και είναι τόσο παράξενο και χα χα, χωρίς να υπάρχει ιδιαίτερο χιούμορ. Βαρετό, βαρετό, βαρετό.

A charming, well-written, funny, understated, laugh-out-loud funny book. Nor is it your typical English village recap -- it takes place in an English village, but you'll not met Miss Marple or Miss Silver round any of the corners.
I can't wait for the movie to come up on my Netflix queue!

I saw the film years ago, but noticed this book on the table at a bookcrossing meet and thought I would give it a go. I wasn’t disappointed.
“Tie-in to the forthcoming Fox/Sky comedy ‘Saving Grace’, starring Brenda Blethyn, Craig Ferguson, Martin Clunes and Leslie Phillips. Set in a beautiful tiny town on the Cornish coast, this is the story of Grace (played by Brenda Blethyn), a cheery housewife and amateur horticulturist, who is rudely awakend from her complacency when her husband jumps out of a plane—without a parachute, leaving her with enormous debts. Having tried all other options, Grace’s gardener (Craig Ferguson) suggests a solution: by growing vast amounts of marijuana and selling it on to a drug baron, Grace can raise all the cash she needs to get out of her sticky situation. Saving Grace is similar to classic comedies such as Whisky Galore! and more modern classics such as Local Hero. It is, however, the different characters in the film, such as the local doctor played by Martin Clunes and the vicar played by Leslie Phillips, as well as a magnificent performance by Brenda Blethyn, that make the film so funny and memorable.”

Do you know how many books are called Saving Grace! I have now ordered the DVD which I am told won't live up to my expectations after reading the book. An easy read which I read in two days. It was simple, funny and towards the end I did indeed laugh out loud. Ending was quick and slightly disappointing, warranting more explanation but it is fun in an old fashioned way. Grace needs money fast after her 'scummy husband' leaves her in debt. Enter Matthew her loyal gardener with some cannibis and the ensuing adventure is surreal and just about plausible. I liked for the simplicity of it.

Had me hooked from the first chapter! Charming, funny and oh so true.
