This was an early chapter book (AR 3.1, 92 pages with illustrations) that was funny, quaint, surprising, and a little gross. Rabbit's bad habit was unexpected, I didn't know they were cecotropes, so there was an added science lesson in there too for my kiddos. The contrast between the two characters was very interesting and fun for my 2nd grade and 3rd grade readers! Readers may also enjoy "Chicken Squad" series by Doreen Cronin, "Haggis and Tank" series by Jessica Young, or "BUNJITSU Bunny" series by John Himmelman. Happy Reading!

My son grew up with me reading him Frog and Toad are friends, this is not Frog and Toad. It is a much more realistic view of animals, although not completely. We have a grumpy, thieving, poop eating rabbit and a happy-go-lucky bear. Rabbit is always trying to tell bear he is not very smart, yet he is embarrassed about eating his own poop. When a hungry carnivorous wolf is on the chase to eat rabbit, bear tries several things to help him, finally becoming successful. They become friends, make a snowman together and live together in bear's cave. There is a great educational side to the book too, talking about gravity, habitats and also rabbit digestion, so there are some great classroom ideas that you could explore with this. This is a fun book with humorous adventures that my 5 year old grandson enjoyed. He especially liked the part about the rabbit eating poo, as any little boy would. This would make a great book for late primary classrooms where children are becoming independent readers. The illustrations are adorable. The emotions on the faces of the animals added a lot to the story. They were not overly colourful, which was fine, but they were engaging. The publisher, Children's Books, provided me with a copy of this book to read. The rating, ideas and opinions are my own.

Yes, this picture book is over 100 pages long. But it doesn't really feel like it. It reads pretty quickly, since there are plenty of pictures (there's even a cool map in the front so we can see where the story takes place).

It's a very wintry story, and the colour palette of blue, white, black, and grey reflects that. Bear wakes up after what she thinks is a nightmare about being robbed of all her stored food. Since she's up anyway, she decides to build a snowman. It's during this activity that she meets a grumpy rabbit. Well, I'd be grumpy, too, if I had to eat my own poo. (At first, I thought maybe this part of the story was just put in there for shock value. But when I looked it up, it's actually true! So kids get a nice little science lesson about cecotropes in addition to the fun narrative.)

Rabbit tells Bear about things like gravity and avalanches (and how his grandfather had to eat his own leg to survive after being trapped in one). He's kind of haughty, and eventually goes off to build his own snowman. But then a wolf tries to eat him, and Bear has to use the information Rabbit taught her to thwart his dinner plans.

The illustrations are really cute, with great facial expressions. The wolf is kind of hilarious. He's pathetically skinny and almost a caricature; everything is exaggerated, from his pointy nose to his giant ears.

The writing/editing was just a little bit weak. There were a few places it could've been tightened up, and at one point the text referred to Bear as "he" (she's female). But the story itself is so fun and funny, and the new friendship that forms as a result of the events in the book is heartwarming. I can't wait to see what adventures these two have next!

Quotable moment:

Kuvakirja mukavan katu-uskottavassa koossa. Mahtuu reppuun kuin reppuun. Kärttyinen ja katkera jänis, hyväntahtoinen hömelö karhu, nälkäinen susi, mahtavan ilmeikäs kuvitus, vähän tekstiä ja aivan naurettavan nolo kaninpapanansyönti-episodi. Nelosluokkalainen halusi lukea tämän ääneen mulle. Minkä nyt sitten pystyi naurultaan lukemaan.
Ykkös-kakkosen vinkkauspakettiin. Sopii hyvin vielä heikosti lukeville kolmosnelosillekin.

On one hand, this book has great life lessons. On the other hand, it’s pretty crude and a lot of poop and toilet humor. My knee jerk is to drop the series due to the latter but the former probably justifies continuing.

And my seven year old thought it was funny. Just be warned before buying. It certainly was not what I expected (and it is much loved). I just probably wouldn’t have picked it up if I knew before

I found this book in a pile of books I was shelving at the library, I liked the cover and loved the illustrations inside. The story is brilliant for really young readers. The rabbit's bad habits were not what I was expecting! I will be recommending and waiting for the next one in the series!

Sudennälkä on meillä sukuvika."

Herkese tavsiye ederim. Sevgiler: ADA SEVEN 🐻🐰RABBİT AND BEAR🐰🐻

Sized just right for young readers to have a "real book" that they can read, this volume is the first of a series about Rabbit and Bear and the series holds promise for popular "chapter books" (though it isn't divided into chapters).

The illustrations are spot-on attention grabbing for these young readers and even young reader-listeners.

Its Winter and Bear awakes from hibernation and is hungry but her food is missing. So bear makes a snowman.

At this point Rabbit enters the story since the snowman rolls down the hill in an "avalanche" and covers Rabbits hole in the ground. Arguments or discussions ensue but this rather tense relationship ultimately blossoms into a sweet friendship.

In the meantime, their discussion involves "poo." Rather..... eating poo. Really?

Now I realize I'm a bit of old school and a Southern lady with quirks of my own, but to entertain the subject of poo in a children's book and especially the eating of poo is really quite out of sync in my opinion. I know there is a bounty of books that focus on the subject of poo and if one wishes to acquire these, that is one's choice.

Now about the subject of this particular rabbit eating his own poo. As it turns out, there is firm truth or scientific fact behind this practice of rabbits. I know we're not going to change the rabbits from doing what they are designed to do, I just feel the presentation of this information a bit heavy and out of place in this form of children's book.

Now we have to address the third character in the book - the Wolf. He wants to eat Rabbit and so the chase ensues. This is where the friendship between Rabbit and Bear really takes root. Bear comes to the rescue of Rabbit and saves him from being dinner for Wolf.

A happy ending and a really cute book. I'd rate it 5-star for design, illustrations, and overall story. But a 3-star for the inclusion (heavily) of eating poo. Hence a 4-star overall rating. I look forward to future releases in the Rabbit and Bear series; and if the end pages map of the territory is any indication, the series will be a lot of interest and fun.

DISCLOSURE: I received a complimentary copy to facilitate this review of my own opinions which are freely given.

Beer? Beer was mijn favoriet.

Leuk!

Bear is peacefully sleeping through the winter when she is awakened by a thief stealing her stockpile of food. She stumbles out of her cave into the snow, and decides that as long as she's awake, she might as well build a snowman. The cranky Rabbit is determined to build a bigger, better snowman on the neighboring hill, but when the ravenous Wolf shows up, Rabbit's plans take a dangerous turn when he can't get back to his safe burrow.
Who stole all of Bear's food? How will Rabbit get to safety? Who will win the snowman-building competition? And the most important question of all, can a Bear and Rabbit really become friends?

This hilarious picture book has so many wild twists and unexpected turns, I was never quite sure what would happen next. The whimsical characters are brought to life with playful illustrations and snappy dialogue.

I love the mild color-scheme of the pictures, and how some details are drawn very sharp and clear, and others are softened in the background. It's a really beautiful art style, and enhances the story by drawing attention to the characters expressions and actions. You can almost touch the cold of the snow, and squint in the glare of the sun, and feel the annoyance of Rabbit, or the curiosity of Bear. The illustrations are powerful and emotive, but feel light and silly and fun.

The plot is not at all what I expected! It's so much more comical and weird and lively than I could ever have envisioned. It took me by surprise on every page, and I kept thinking, Oh, I need to read this with my niece, because she would adore it!
