Violet Harper is just about to turn seventeen when her world is torn apart. Fleeing from her home and from the creatures who took everything from her, she ends up in New York. The city that never sleeps isn't quite the safe haven that she’d hoped for. It is teeming with demons who are out for her blood.
Encountering three strange allies, Violet soon learns that a war is raging between heaven and hell and that she is directly in the middle of it. The master of hell is planning a hostile takeover of Earth. It is apparently her destiny to stop him from breaking open the gates to the underworld and releasing a flood of ravenous demons.
Armed with only her wits and sarcasm, it will take strength and courage that she never knew she possessed to face the ordeals ahead. What Violet doesn't know yet is that she won’t be alone. The guardian angel she’d always thought was just her imagination is very real. He will be watching over her and guarding her back as she faces the minions of hell.
I began reading horror and paranormal books when most girls my age were still reading fairy stories. I always dreamed that one day I would be able to write stories that readers could become lost in.
The Mortis, Shifter Squad, Hellscourge and Fate's Warriors series are connected, but can be read as stand alone series. The overarching theme about Fate's chosen champions will come to an end with my fifth series; Loki's Exile.
My sixth series, Hunter Elite, begins a new saga with the seventh series, Half Fae Hunter, as a spin off.

DNF at 10% because the writing and I immediately entered an irreconcilable differences divorce.
When the narrator solemnly informed me that through trial and error she realized “soil is softer than asphalt,” I had to put the book down and stare into the middle distance like I was processing a major life event. The writing continued that way. Girl… I’m not five. I don’t need Blue’s Clues world-building.
I wanted grit, demons, danger. I got educational programming for baby’s first apocalypse.
If you enjoy very literal narration and reminders about the physical properties of dirt, you may thrive here. But for me?
3.5 stars It was a worthwhile read. I did enjoy the take on angels and demons. I just question the shallowness if the story. I kept feeling like I wanted more. I love Nathan ( who couldn’t?) but even his character isn’t fully developed. I really wanted to get excited about this book but it feels like the story is too restrained.
I love this series and I think J.C. Diem is an extremely talented writer. The first series I read by her was The Shifter Squad (I know I read them out of order whoops) any ways I am hooked on almost all of her books. This series is well worth it. Full of action, forbidden love, betrayal, and much more to keep you on your toes!
It is definitely an interesting story. The book started a little slow but did pick up pretty quickly. There are may interesting creatures and a journey to hell itself. This book leaves the reader curious about the next book. I enjoyed it enough that I may read book 2 at some point in the future.
Violet Harper normal girl, you think....nope she the chosen one to save her world from demons. Right off the bat, we have action, adventure with Violet. I enjoyed the whole book and the mystery was still left for the next novel in the series, to keep the readers wanting more and wanting to find out which secrets the next novel holds.
J.C. Diem has brought us another fabulous and great book. Can't wait to read book 2 now.
I decided to read this book, since I enjoyed the shifter squad series that this author wrote. I was not disappointed. Although, it has the normal tragic teenager turns into the world's last hope, there is plenty to make the book unique and interesting. The characters are complex and you either love or hate them. I definitely recommend this book if you want a different take on angels and demons.
Fairly decent novel. I actually enjoyed most of it and the mystery was still left for the next novel in the series, to keep the readers wanting more and wanting to find out which secrets the next novel holds.
Boring and very slow moving.....I started skipping through at 20%. The rest (that I skipped through anyway) played out exactly like I thought it would, with cliches and world building that was incomplete. This was DNF for me, which is always disappointing!
J.C. Diem has again brought a young heroine to life who is more than she seems to everyone else around her. Violet Harper is just a normal girl, or so she thinks.
