A Novel Deception #1

Tutto il resto è amore

Rate this book

4 stars!

I feel like I’ve been reading a lot of heavier books lately, so I thought taking a break with a sexy billionaire romance would be a good idea. What I liked best about this book: the humor, the heroine and her antics, the back and forth banter between Meg and her boss, Adrian. The emails between Natalie and Meg. Adrian’s snarky behavior. The ending- it was pretty perfect. There wasn’t anything I necessarily disliked. There were a few things in the middle that I wished would have gone a bit differently, but overall, I’m glad I picked this up. A solid 4 star read.

If you’re looking for a boss/employee, love-hate, billionaire romance that is funny, sexy and entertaining, I would highly recommend this one. I listened to the audio version of this book and the narration was fantastic!

Random Books vs Jasmine: 5 - 0

Yet another one bites the dust for me *sighs*. Well I was secretly hoping that this one would at least worked out but against the forces of the book universe, me and random pickup reads were destined for doomsville.

The worst part is that I actually enjoyed the book for the first 25%. I loved the female MC and she was dishing out some amazing humor and mentally raging at her evil boss that literally made me LOL-ed.

"This fucker. He's wormed his way into every part of my life somehow, ruining everything - except this. This was all I had until now.

Oh Jesus God, I have masturbated to words that this man wrote.

I'm going need something heavier than an ashtray."

But past 25%, I started needing more than just entertaining monologues and slowly I realized that if I looked past the humor, the plot really lacked depth. The story was running all over the place like a headless chicken and the characters were acting sporadically without reasons, especially this boss cum kinky author. It nearly gave me whiplash!

One minute this boss was apparently evil but turns out he's actually nice. One minute they were boss/secretary but another minute they were like close buddies. Huh what? Did my book lose some pages in between that the dynamic shifted at lightspeed?

Also I then realised I had no idea what this dude actually does for a living except he's filthy rich and apparently has too much time on his hand that he pretends to be a female author that writes a panty-soaking series. For all I care, it could have been a damn hippie who wrote it either.

Okay so this isn't really a review but I'm just gonna cut my losses early and move on :)

I listened to the audiobook edition of this book and the narration was fantastic. This book had me laughing from start to finish. I loved the witty back and forth banter between Adrian and Meghan. It had a feel that was very reminiscent of 'Beautiful Bastard' with the hilarious verbal sparring and the strong-minded female lead.

Adrian is the quintessential tyrant boss. He's arrogant, condescending and downright intolerable. Meghan is the only secretary that has been able to survive his badgering for any significant period of time. She's smart, quick witted and sharp-tongued. She's the perfect match for him and the only one who can hold her own against him.

When Adrian reveals that he is a best-selling romance author, writing under a female pen name, Meghan realizes that he is the very same author that she's been messaging to vent about his workplace antics. It turns out that he has a proposition for Meghan. He needs for Meghan to become Natalie for public appearances, keeping his secret.

Meghan agrees, and quickly things heat up between the two. Steamy business trips lead to awkwardness in the office come Monday morning. Eventually, things come to a head.

Overall, I thought this was a good story. It held my attention from beginning to end and had me laughing like a crazy person. The vibe of the story did change pretty rapidly, with the characters engaged in verbal sparring one moment, only to find them sharing sweet nothings in the next moment. Things moved along pretty quickly, but that just seemed to keep it interesting for me. The narration was also fantastic. So, if you're a fan of audiobooks, this might be a good choice for you.

I read about 85 percent and I couldn't force myself to keep reading anymore. The story had a very promising start then about 20 percent in it derailed. The characters started doing things without rhyme or reason. There was absolutely no romance. There were sex scenes but they seemed to get in the way of the story. Characters jumped from one emotion to another and I got lost. I thought maybe I missed a few pages because of all the jumps. I didn't know what the book wanted to be. Did it want to be funny? Or angsty? A boss and secretary story? A bdsm story? A plus sized story? What? It was just a jumbled mess. I really loved the beginning too so I'm sad that it didn't continue along those lines.

The Good, The Bad and Everything In Between
-So many tropes, so little time: I’ve been on a billionaire romance kick and I saw this cover and blurb, and it seemed to be a trifecta - BBW heroine, secretary falls for boss and he happens to be gorgeous billionaire. It even had the twist of gorgeous billionaire who writes erotic romance about his secretary.

-I liked the beginning because of the heroine’s voice.

-I liked the ending because of the hero’s voice.

-I wasn’t as enamored of the middle: Their relationship was, for lack of a better term, disjointed. Their first “romantic” interaction was out of the blue and rather quick. Their subsequent times together seemed to vacillate from friendly to antagonistic in a way that made little sense. I didn’t believe that Meg couldn’t figure out that she was the basis for the novels he was writing. I didn’t quite buy into the romance when it seemed to be more sexual than anything else.

-Adrian’s personality was all over the place: The major problem was Adrian - he wasn’t clearly defined and as a result, the entire romance seemed to be all over the place.

The Bottom Line
There were things I liked, and some that didn’t quite work, but I’d give this author another chance.

My review contains spoilers and they're mostly my thoughts as I went with the book... for more, visit Punya Reviews...

Now here is the thing; I generally tend to avoid anything that says billionaire romance... almost that is. This story, my first attempt at Melanie Marchande’s writing, caught my attention solely because of the blurb. The funny little blurb that mentions a secretary wanting to throw an ashtray at her arrogant, pain in the a$$ boss. So yah, I was going to find out exactly why. ;)

Meghan has been working for the Risinger Company for the past couple of years, as the secretary to the young boss, Adrian. You can say that it’s a job that requires your blood, sweat, tears and then, some more aka her personal life. She doesn’t have any at this point. Meghan hates her arrogant, filthy rich, superbly handsome boss. The man has been a total a$$ to her since the beginning, always criticizing her efforts.

Either way, Meghan’s life is not a fairytale. She already has low self-esteem, thanks to a cold and b!tchy mother and a father who likes to remain behind her shadows. I’d call her mother something more but there’s no point in wasting my time, but hell, that woman was rather vile. She has never wasted one moment to remind Meghan just how much of a disappointment she is, including her ‘fat and ugly’ self. No wonder Meghan avoids her family, unless she’s forced to attend the family get-togethers, such as the one in Christmas.

Though Meghan has a love-hate relationship with her job (that pays reasonably well) and her disgustingly attractive boss, she tends to hide her true feelings. In a perverted way, she’s attracted to him, a fact that she actually loves, rather than hate. The cause of her despair. Yah she’d like to throw a lot of things at him but he’s still as handsome as they come. Then they have these ‘fun’ banters, as if trying to bite each-other’s head off, that to me read more like foreplay, rather than true hatred. LOL And Adrian always let’s her reply to his own biting remarks. Meghan can attest to that as she hasn’t lost her job over any of those, so that must be something!

Then one day, things fall apart... almost quite literally, as, after an encounter that involves the office swimming pool (yah they even have a personal gym there *eyeroll*), Meghan comes to realize just how hot her boss is for her. Not disgusted by the ‘fat and ugly’ Meghan, who is very aware that her body is far from perfect, including those pounds she needs to shed. Yet Adrian seems to think her curves her perfect. Weeeeell, isn’t that surprising! Adrian Risginger, who can have any woman he wants, is crazy for her; Meghan, his behind-the-scene, nobody secretary!!!

The real fun begins then, when Adrian calls her one day to go on a… er, book tour. Umm, whaaaat? Turns out the recent sensation in popular erotic romance genre, an author that Meghan herself have been devouring solely because the heroine of the story is in an almost similar situation with a hot boss, is her own hot boss! And now he wants her to become ‘the face’ behind the work, since, obviously, he can’t be that person. Meghan can only blink and stare at Adrian’s face. Throwing an ashtray at his head seemed the perfect way to ease her anger, as if she needed this added crap on her days of overloaded crap, thanks to the sexy man sitting in front of her.

But a job is a job and she has to go, as commanded, but what Meghan wants, is to try to get into that head of Adrian Risinger, to know what he actually thinks of their encounter at the swimming pool. Though she had no confusion about the fact that he wants her, after they returned to the ‘reality’, he has gone back to being her bossy boss. The answer was to be revealed soon, once they’re in the tour and the conference that ‘Natalie McBride’ is supposed to be. Meghan finds herself entangled with the sexyness of Adrian Risinger, in all way possible, as finally she ends up sleeping with him. Or, he with her. Goes both ways.

But the so-called affair was so much fun (and HOT) that Meghan begins to wonder about the ‘what ifs’. Adrian, when he’s not being a jerk, is actually fun to be with. She never had any doubt about his brains, mix that with this version of warm, entertaining and considerate Adrian, and you get the perfect male specimen. He’s still filthy rich, so what’s there not to like? Meghan wants to hold on to these precious moments, where Adrian can’t get enough of her curves and never forgets to remind her just how hot and hard she makes him. Come to think of it, no matter how mean he was in the past, not one of his comments was directed towards Meghan’s body and appearance. Not ONE. A flattering thought but where will it lead to?

The answer, Meghan finds out, can’t come soon enough, right after they return from the trip. Adrian, though wants to carry on with the affair, he wants it discreet. Meghan can’t help it, or him, but she gradually becomes unhappy about the situation, seeing how her own feeling towards him has transformed in to something entirely different. Though the practical Meghan knows that a man like him would never flaunt her in his arms, the impractical side of her wants to rebel at the idea. Meghan even finds out just how long her boss has been fantasizing about her from some earlier drafts of his work. She knew she can’t go on this way when they can’t keep their hands off of each-other. Adrian though…. Well, she’s not even sure just what he wants beyond the hot sex.

And this, becomes the issue at hand. Adrian goes back to being the a$$hole, hurting Meghan in the process. I was actually mad at Adrian, not knowing why he’s being Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde where she was concerned. It was very apparent he cared for her, maybe even more so, yet he does some stuff (no cheating, don’t worry, or I’ll have his balls) that made me mad. I was completely confused about his motives, as in, what the hell was he trying to achieve by pushing her away?

This time, it takes a few months for the answer to appear, when they meet again in an animal shelter where Meghan used to work and still loves to frequent as a volunteer.

His Secretary: Undone was funny. The tone and the storyline were quirky, good enough for me to read on. However, the biggest issue I personally had was with the writing. It needed a good editor IMO. The banters between Adrian and Meghan were enjoyable, with their chemistry sizzling, enough for me to be curious about the next installment. It does end in a HFN, with a HEA on the horizon... but I won’t be complaining if there’s another story with these two in it.

I’m a little on the fence about the rating. It could’ve been 4... almost. But for now, 3.5 stars.

5 'Can I be his secretary' stars!

Wow. Absolutely loved this book. Hot, hot and oh did I say HOT!?

Meghan's boss is a man who is very hard to work for. She stays because she gets paid well, and knows Adrian wouldn't be able to keep help because he's so mean. So she stays.

One night while browsing through Amazon she comes across a book called His Secretary. She reads it and finds it amazing hot. That week is the best week of her life....haha she found "pleasure" in reading if you catch my drift.

After finding out there were others books in this series she devoured them all. She sent off an email to the author telling her how much she loved her books. Only to find out the author is actually her boss Adrian! He hires Meg to pretend to be Natalie McBride at signings and conventions.

This book was well written with some mistakes, but I loved the story so much I didn't mind those mistakes. The plot was unique and I could relate to the characters. The banter between the 2 characters was off the charts hot. Their foreplay was arguing...and they did that a bunch :)

I can't recommend this one enough. If your looking for a short, funny, SEXY, HOT, steamy read, you will want to read this one.

I do enjoy it when a snarky, asshole boss stays true to his snarkiness throughout a story. So often he gets all soppy around the edges when the romance starts happening.

I really enjoyed this. I just wish he was called something other than Adrian. 😶

Complete story, available on ku. Recommended for fans of Stylo Fantome and Karina Halle especially. 'Adrian' reminded me of Javier and Jackson Kane, two of my all time faves.

This was cute...rushed, but cute. And really amusing! I love books that can be funny at times but hot as hell at other times. Good stuff. And the ending. Cheesy and predictable, buuuuut so damn sweet.

I love you Melanie!

Well I have to say this story surprised me more than once. Positively I must add.
Completely something else altogether.
Funny and sad, cheerful and sorrowful.
I was halfway through and still wasn't sure what to make of it all.
Usually at that stage I'm aware if I love/hate the characters, plot and the rest.

I felt for Meghan.
I'm not a fan of stories with big girls in them(I'm not skinny myself by any means), the deal with those books is the countless times it being mentioned, seems like it's a disease.
Meg is plus size - she's dealing with it pretty well, although it's been hard for her and all her life she's been repeatedly reminded about her weight(look, her lovely mother).
Adrian being hot and fit makes her self conscious, which is totally normal.
His approach makes a difference, he doesn't seem to mind, so what the hell, right? :)
I love the way Natalie sorted that issue out.
They're amazing together, I adore the banter and their smart mouths.

What about Adrian and his little game? It all ended the way it did, so it's all good.

I'm not going to mention Meg's mom, it still makes my blood boil!

Reading A LOT of books makes it hard for me to find a story that will grab me and shake me well.
Bravo Mel, you managed that!

5*

Meghan's life is a private hell, at least it has been since she started working for her boss Adrian Risinger. He is the epitome of DIC in Dictator and once Meghan found out that the author who she had been coveting and corresponding with after reading her book is actually Adrian, a part of her shattered. Now Adrian wants Meghan to impersonate "Natalie" the celebrated author and the chemistry heats up, but will Meghan be able to move past when it is all said and one.

Intriguing concept, I had a bit of a hard time softening to Adrian he is a jerk. Meghan is sweet but she has plenty of sass. Would check out more in this series.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review, even though the author is on my automatic pre-order list and I had it purchased anyway.

Adrian and Meghan are the strangest HEA couple I have read in a long time – and I loved it! They are not lovey-dovey and coo all over each other. These two? Snarky to the max – a quality I quite enjoy. The book is all about the working relationship between these two and boy Howdy, do they push each other’s buttons. Both of them have major self issues (esteem, if you like) that keep them from putting themselves on the line. Melanie Marchande really told a funny, sexy, steamy story that kept me reading until I was through. I have enjoyed other books by Ms. Marchande and I will continue to read ‘em as soon as she writes ‘em.

Even though there were some deep issues in this book (let’s say I wanted to smack Mom…) it was a very enjoyable read. Ms. Marchande wrote the story so that you never felt used and abused as a reader. You won’t be sorry you decided to pick this one up.

Adrian is one of those men who you hate to love, and love to hate all at the same time, "really?" He reaches into his pocket and pulls out my panties, holding them up at my eye level. "This is your idea of having a good time?" He can be a cruel, cruel man, "I can't wait." His eyes rake over me, drinking me in. "You'll get the rest of your punishment with my c*** inside you." Our girl Meg is a smart cookie nothing gets passed her, "before Valentine's Day," I continue. "She was very clear about that. So, I'm forced to draw the conclusion that you bought this for me four months before there was even a hint that we'd ever be sleeping together. Or, you bought it for someone else and re-gifted it." Adrian he understands his girl more than she gives him credit for, "he chuckles, his lips just inches from where I want them. "Don't even pretend like you wouldn't have punched me in the balls." There was humor and angst in this book and I really enjoyed the ride it sent me on.

I had this on kindle, but got a deal & read it on Audible.
The narrator did a great job with Meg's POV, but the H, Adrian's voice was a little monotone. I know that it's difficult trying to get the deeper voice for him, but I didn't like it.
I liked Meg. She really stood up to her boss Adrian-for a really long time.
The story had a great start, but lagged a little in the middle. The secret identity trope is well done, but I wish that there was more done with it. Maybe a little more drama.
A hint of a would-be ow. That's fine with me, since I wanted more time with Meg and Adrian.
I love the Boss-employee trope. This was an original take on it.
I think that I received this book reco on Facebook. I listened while driving to & from work.

Vikki’s Musings

I’m so glad I discovered this book while looking for one with the audio version for $1.99. This is the first book I have read by Ms. Marchande, but it will not be the last. His Secretary Undone has an interesting plot, a bit different than the typical billionaire romance, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Meghan has the boss from Hades, and her mother is just as bad. When she finds an erotic romance series, she is able to escape from her dismal life each night as she loses herself in the pages of the books. She decides to email the author, never expecting a response. To her great surprise, she does get a reply, and they end up corresponding often. She feels she has found a kindred spirit.

Adrian has a huge secret and a dilemma on his hands. He writes erotic romance under a pen name. When his agent insists he starts going to book signings and conferences, he decides to get his secretary to pose as the author and him as an editor.

When Meghan’s boss informs her that she will be acting as the writer of the erotic romances he pens, she is blown away to discover he is the author of the books she’s been reading. She’s appalled that she has been emailing her boss about her feelings toward him, but then he mentions that his agent handles all his emails.

Can Meghan pose as the author when she is falling further under his spell each day, or should she refuse, and keep her heart safe?

I’m not a huge fan of the first person POV, but it works great for this book. The writing flows seamlessly between narrative and dialogue. I loved the banter between Adrian and Meghan. The chemistry between the two is combustible from the first page to the last.

Meghan is a bit different from the usual heroine. She isn’t slender or gorgeous. She’s a real woman, a bit overweight and has insecurities because of it. She’s completely surprised when she realizes Adrian is attracted to her. It’s no wonder she has problems with self-esteem with such an emotionally abusive mother.

Even though my first exposure to Adrian’s character is less than desirable, I still liked him. He’s a complicated guy with many layers to his personality. Ms. Marchande is able to get the reader to understand what he’s all about, even though, she doesn’t switch to Adrian’s POV until the last chapter. I’m glad she did do that because it confirmed my feelings toward Adrian.

If you are looking for a novel with a unique twist, with great characters, then you will enjoy His Secretary Undone as much as I did. Evidently there is a second book that continues their story, even though this one does have a happy ending. I look forward to reading it. Happy reading!

3.5* for a relatively standard adult romance with a lot of (well written) smut. The plot is relatively predictable but extremely gripping and a lot of fun to read! The writing is also spot on, too.

Romance and Fantasy for Cosmopolitan Girls

I... sort of can't believe how much I loved this book. Like, immediately bought the others in the series loved it. Originally I didn't even want to commit to the 99 cents so I got the first three chapters as a sample and I got sucked in despite myself. The dialogue was cute, their relationship was realistic (well, I mean, the whole convenient billionaire thing aside) and I thought the author treated the problems in their relationship the right way. Sometimes it's frustrating in a romance when the characters realize they're in love and they work out some misunderstanding or obstacle and that's it. It's much harder (and more realistic) when the relationship itself is the obstacle, but that's what happened here and the payoff was great.

This is random, but I also really liked the slow, steady backstory reveal. I'm trying to figure out how to articulate what I mean by this... there was no info dump in the beginning about their relationship. As the story progressed the author revealed more and more about the five years Meghan worked for him, that their relationship hadn't always been flirty antagonism, that even though they had great banter there was a lot of underlying cruelty and hurt... I guess I just appreciated that even though at the beginning we know Meghan is super frustrated and unhappy, the reasons why are revealed slowly and you get the chance to see their interactions and relationship before knowing about all the times she cried in the bathroom at work. I think if she had given us too much information about what a shit he was too early on it would have been hard to like him, or to understand why Meghan liked him. I honestly think if it hadn't been handled the right way the relationship would have seemed a lot more abusive, and the power disparity (boss and secretary having sex on what's essentially a work trip) would have been a lot more troubling. Part of their relationship is that he's pretty dominating, but there's a huge difference between consensual relationship domination and a boss taking advantage of his employee, or even something closer to domestic abuse.

Anyway, I'm rambling.

tl;dr: I just really... was impressed and happy with this one. A dollar well spent.

This book has to be one of the funniest, laugh-out-loud, steamy and romantic books I’ve read in a long time – AND there is no cliffhanger!!!

Even though you know from the synopsis that the boss from hell turns out to be the writer of the books that has Megan fantasizing all kinds of things, hearing her tell the story in first person (usually not my favorite “voice” but I loved it in this book) was so compelling I had to force myself to stop reading around 3:00 a.m. so that I could function the next day. When I woke up I couldn’t wait to start reading again. And - oh, the last chapter is perfect. Instead of Megan telling the story it switches to Adrian – loved that!

Sometimes when I really love a book, like this one, it’s very difficult for me to describe exactly what there is about it that I loved. In the beginning it made me laugh out loud. Later it made me want to scream at both Megan and Adrian. Later still it had me crying. I guess the fact that it evoked such strong emotions in me is what I really liked about it as well as the fact that I really loved the story itself.

I found the writing crisp and quick – never was I bored for even a second. I’ve read a few other books by Melanie Marchande, and while I remember liking them, I don’t remember that they had such an impact on me. I have several other books by her on my TBR list and now I have to move them to the top.

If you like funny, witty, sexy, steamy dialogue I think you will love this story. One note of warning: there is quite a bit of strong language in the book so if liberal use of the F-word offends you, you might want to pass on this one. In my opinion the story would be every bit as good without quite as liberal use of this word but I am able to ignore that and still love the writing and story in spite of that.

I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review but I loved the book enough that I also pre-ordered a copy.

What a truly different type of romance story this was! Adrian is surely the worst boss ever, Meghan shields most people that have to deal with him and takes the brunt herself. Oh how I loved the barbs they threw at each other, so funny and innovative.

Meghan is asked by her boss to become the writer he has penned, to be able to go to conventions and meet readers. Meghan is flabbergasted at this turn of events, as she has already read that author’s books and even started corresponding with ‘her’. She agrees and the set off, and they also give in to their attraction, Meghan can’t believe he finds her attractive. They spend the rest of the conference giving to their lust, but Meghan wonders what will happen once they go back to the real world. Will he treat her the same? Well it certainly doesn’t change and he goes back to being his cold self and that makes Meghan believe he was only looking to bed her. Things get much worse before anyone can see a ‘happily ever after’.

I almost hated Adrian at the beginning, I was hoping he would redeem himself and couldn’t wait to see what he would do to get her back. Meghan is such a strong character, her personality just jumps out at you. Such great words put together to bring these two to life, Melanie Marchande has a way with doing just that! This is story is highly recommended, it’s only the second story I’ve read from this author, and certainly can’t wait to see what else she comes up with.

My thoughts: So I actually was enjoying this book up until about 80%. While they H did a lot of push pull and it got annoying I thought that we would get a good reason for it when everything came out. Yet we find out that basically he is just a selfish spoiled jerk. Yep, he treated his h like crap because he could......

oh and the h is a codependent mess

Overall Rating: 2.5

Revisited this one... still fun!
(but no way am I going to read the follow up stories... I don't like to mess with a good HEA)

Adrian and Natalie. I enjoyed this one more than I thought I would. There are some slow patches but the witty back and forth between Adrian and Natalie kept me chuckling. It wasn't just a humorous romp though. There's a nice arc in their relationship and more depth of character than I was expecting. Adrian was born wealthy and has never had to worry about anything. Then he meets Natalie, his new secretary and she doesn't put up with his jerk-off ways of ordering people about. Well, that's not true, I mean, she wants to keep her job. So she puts up with him, but sasses him right back.... and he kinda likes it! More intelligent than your usual billionaire love tale, this story shows how two people who have survived horrible parents can learn to be 'real' together.

I was excited to read this because it was recommended by a blog I love, so I ditched my other read to dive into this one. It started out
good, I got hooked from the first few chapters and it didn't hurt that it was hot too. Nope, it sure didn't. But somehow, somewhere along the way, it felt kind of boring. It was just too dragging for me. I like how the writer built up the sexual tension and chemistry of the MCs but dragging it for too long is a buzz kill for me. Add the hot-n-cold-assholey-hero-attitude and poof, my attention slowly withers. And right when I feel like it was the end (because if sure felt like it) I was still having pages to click. 75% of the book and I was tempted to ditch it but then I feel like I would miss something so I force myself to finish it. Luckily I did, bless my eyes (it's 2 freakin am here). All in all, it was an okay read tho not really a remarkable one. Hot and smutty. x
