For a band director this book has some great techniques throughout. For a choral or an orchestral director there are a couple of chapters that could pertain to that area but it is more geared toward band directors. There were several good suggestions throughout the book. Definitely read it if you are in the field.
I know I’m being harsh when I say that there was a bit too much fluff regarding stories. The author presents several things as fact, when they aren’t. He referenced a “study” with a sample size of one person and said it as a fact. I’m nitpicking. And the stories at the end of the book are harrowing but I didn’t see the relevance towards teaching besides “music is good for the soul”.
I was just hoping for more direct focus on techniques which the book did an adequate job of. If you want a couple of good suggestions and some feel good stories about music, read it.
