Ethics and Professional Issues in Couple and Family Therapy, Second Edition builds upon the strong foundations of the first edition. This new edition addresses the 2015 AAMFT Code of Ethics as well as other professional organizations’ codes of ethics, and includes three new one on in-home family therapy, a common method of providing therapy to clients, particularly those involved with child protective services; one chapter on HIPAA and HITECH Regulations that practicing therapists need to know; and one chapter on professional issues, in which topics such as advertising, professional identity, supervision, and research ethics are addressed. This book is intended as a training text for students studying to be marriage and family therapists.
This book does a great overview over counseling ethics, however, it can be dry in some areas. It’s definitely a staple for any counselor or counselor in training but just be aware that its full of ethical jargon as well as an explanation of ethical practices. If these are things you are currently not versed on or are not at the forefront of your mind it may be difficult to get through. Ethics are important and they keep you safe as well as keeping your client safe, however it can also be overwhelming with the amount of things that you need to remember to avoid an ethical dilemma.
This textbook does a good job of introducing systems perspectives on ethics. I'd appreciate more overt discussion of AAMFT code of ethics material, but that's easy to supplement. the writing is generally clear and compelling, and the guidance is very practical.
An excellent resource that makes the daunting topic of ethics understandable. I appreciated the authors were honest and gave specific examples without completely terrifying the reader.
