Not much actually changed from the first volume. The only reason I want to give it a 3 instead of a 2 star rating is because I read it at night with no other lights on in my room but the screen light.
i think the stories were a bit longer than in the first volume. the quality was still pretty much the same, steady and enjoyable. the art creeped me out a few times as well.
Noticed that in Vol. 1 the titles were #1, #2, #3, so this one has ♭1, ♭2, ♭3. Kinda funny but that's not even enough to save the boringness of this collection.
Volume 2: • Out in Public (1 star) ° Swing ° Tacit Agreement ° Vacant? (a familiar face appears) ° Scent ° Swim • Those Who Call Out (1 star) ° Photo (huh) ° Hide and Seek ° Agreement ° Wind Voices • In Your Home (1 star) ° Midair ° Fluttering ° Christmas Day ° Stolid • Encountered (1 star) ° Eye-Witness ° Touch (the story could have progressed with the MC becoming paranoid) ° Watching the Sea ° Upsidedown ° Jumper • Hallucination? ° Killing Time ° The 5:00 "BWOO" ° My Town...? ° Illusion
nothing has changed basically. still too short so it doesn't have enough time to build up tension and make me anticipate the 'horror'. pretty boring so to say. (I have to admit the cover is stunning) 2 stars for the art. otherwise it would've been only 1 star.
It's my 3rd or 4th time re-reading this series. I love it, from the stories to the art to the "urban legend" feel.
P.S. Erin Megan just mentioned the author's other series, PTSD Radio, so I figured I might as well re-read Fuan one more time before delving into that one, which I've never read before.
Not as exciting as the first volume of urban legends. The elderly lady from volume one, is back on a train this time-drawn the same. I was wondering if this was being lazy, or on purpose. The rain one, with all the feet patting away in the rain was nicely done.

The chapters in this one were very hit or miss — but the ones that hit really hit. My favorites were the ones that would have some truth behind it, the ones that seemed real, no monsters or ghosts, just terrifying humans. These chapters actually left me feeling a little something over the 'ok just get through it and finish'. I think the problem is the stories being incredibly short, some work super well in that format, but others are just too quick, too bland — there's no time for me to want more or to be on the edge of my seat, it's just a quick couple of pages and you're done. Even so, the ones that work in this type of small format worked super well and I could see some evolution in the art style and the type of storyline. Even so I'm giving it a 3⭐ rating because yes there were some incredibly good ones in there that made me almost stand up, but there were many that were just plain boring.
I think that’s fitting because each tale is so short that there’s almost no room to build tension for what’s to come, yet the content is still a bit unsettling. Tiny seeds of anxiety, indeed. These seeds deliver the creepy illustrations one would expect from Nakayama.
For maximum spoopiness, Fuan no Tane is a dish best served in the night with all the lights turned off.
I complained of pacing issues in the first volume, and it's either slightly better in the second book from time to time, or I just got accustomed to reading these. It's still all over the place and should slow down a bit and concentrate on the individual stories a bit more. Less stories would also make the format seem less repetitive and jumbled.
Worse than the first volume.
I really don't know how to describe these stories apart from just disturbing. Every single one is so intriguing and strange I just can't help but keep reading them even though they really freak me out.
Unknown monsters that you don't want to meet and seeing them means you're in trouble or doom from the start. Each story can give you the suspense and the right amount of horror from mind of Mr. Nakayama. A somewhat great read.
Some of the stories are super unnerving, but most are too short to build up any real horror/dread for me. It does start to get a bit repetitive, but I did get a few scares. I also appreciate the feeling of anxiety and worry that you feel throughout.
Didn't like this one quite as much as volume one. Which is a little weird, since it had a lot of cool monsters and scares, but it also had a bit too much detail/story revealed. I think a LOT of the charm of the first volume was the complete lack of context for me. There was little to no dialogue, little to no exposition, AND I'm not particularly familiar with Japanese urban legends. But this was still good, still creepy and unsettling and I'm sure I'll burn thru the third volume just as fast. And that little baby-creature with the big teeth.. definitely going to see him in a nightmare or two. brrr
First volume I liked quite a bit, as a representation of "fear of the dark" from a japanese perspective. This one ... is a bit of a let down . It features some great stories, but they are subtle and some of them feel a bit filler. Looking forward to read the third one, though
