Unfinished. I simply didn't like it. There were too many contradictory elements in the story, and neither the characters nor the plot appealed to me. But these may be a non issue to kids.
I chose to read this book because of my recent interest in the hedonometer project that traces the story arcs of books.
Without this book, I'm fairly certain that the Toy Story franchise can not exist.
The main Teddy bear's name is Peter Pan. Peter Pan's first appearance was in The Little White Bird in 1902, therefore in just five years or less, the cultural impact of that publication was able to influence Adah Louise Sutton and the naming of her protagonist bear.
The twins are named Tom and Jerry. The MGM Hanna-Barbera shorts did not appear until 1946.
"Teddy bears have no powers of deduction as their brains consist solely of raveled silk and tissue paper. Consequently they never draw inferences, a very lucky thing in the case of Peter Pan." (Ch 12)
In this story, Teddy bears learn to use the telephone, eat food, play games, and create their own social hierarchies.
"Bedelia's fertile brain did not take very long to evolve a method of escape now that she had discovered such valuable confederates in the shape of her cubs." (Ch 6)
The introduction of German Teddy bears change the dynamic of the playroom.
"The new Teddy bears proved a great acquisition to the society of the nursery." (Ch 15)
"It seemed a great shame that such a radical split should have taken place in a society that heretofore had always moved in perfect unison." (Ch 15)
Toys that come alive can also pass on.
"The poor alligator, now reduced to a shapeless pulp, floated idly on top of the water, while his beautifully varnished complexion slowly soaked off and stained the tide in every direction." (Ch 17)
He was later cremated by the housemaid.
What does the canary bird represent and how does Dr. Owl's prescriptions truly influence others?
"It really doesn't matter in the least which one you take, you know. There isn't the smallest chance in the world of your ever getting it put up. Fifty dollars, please." (Ch 17)
"And none too soon, for immediately the wheels inside him ceased to go around and he became dead to the world until someone should come along with a key." (Ch 18)
The talking squirrels reminded me of Rick and Morty.
Despite being defined as the "man in a hole" story arc, the story resolves on Halloween with a clock striking midnight and a mysterious note with allusions to mushrooms.
The story uses iterations of the word, "queer" 19 times, "watchman" 8 times, and "watchmen" 4 times.
