During the 1960's in Birdtown, Kentucky, ten-year-old Annabeth Tucker's life is full of chores and responsibility. At times, three younger brothers, soon to be four, are just about all she can handle. Unexpectedly, things take a drastic turn for the worse when her family is summoned to the farm of a distant relative. To her shock and dismay, Annabeth is confronted by a strange creature and the realization that the care of it will fall on her thin shoulders. Once back in Birdtown, problems arise as crowds converge to get a look at the unusual animal, but it isn't until the arrival of Otis Burnham of The Big Time Carnival that Annabeth must make the biggest decision of her life.
