Germany, 1985. The Reich Council has fallen and the Reich is sundered in two, but the uneasy peace will not last long. To the east, Karl Holliston - now styling himself the Fuhrer of the Greater German Reich - is planning the conquest of Berlin and the destruction of the rebels, while to the west Germany’s former satellites are planning a bid for independence and the North Atlantic Alliance is uneasily considering just what will happen to the Reich’s vast arsenal of nuclear weapons. As the civil war begins, as the Panzers begin their advance on Berlin, the rebels are forced to fight to save their revolution ... ... Or watch helplessly as a jackboot stamps down on Germany, forever.
Fantastic book and had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I highly recommend it for the character work he does and the drama he creates by showing so many points of view.
I like the books written by Christopher Nuttall and I like alternate history type stories. It is not hard to imagine a world where the United States did not declare war on Germany but instead just fought against the Japanese.
The Reich in the 80's would be very tough to maintain. Regardless of whether Hitler survived or Himmler took over, a society dedicated to the purest German lineage and continuing fighting to maintain that environment would eventually fall apart from the cost, both financially and emotionally of trying to keep up such a society. At least that is what one would hope. I suspect the world barely escaped a totalitarian society coming out on top during World War II. I personally think Hitler would never have left the English alone.
Gudrun is a good lead for this book. A strong female, caught up in events that she started but can no longer control. Horst helps keeps her focused on her new role, more as a symbol of the success of the revolution in Germany Prime than its leader but we suspect she feels she could be a good Chancellor.
This book mainly concerns itself with the determination of the Germany East Fuhrer, Holliston, to take back Berlin, and thus Germany Prime. It is a tale of war and loss but Christopher Nuttall handles it well. We find ourselves hoping the U.S. of this world helps Germany Prime.
In the end, this is a tale of a number of people caught up in a very nationalistic conflict, sound familiar, who do their best to carry on under very tough circumstances.
I enjoyed this book and have already bought the next book in the series.
Great combat action and intrigue, the final bit with the cell grabbing their target was a touch dissapointing, but this is still a great book. I am looking forward to the next.
