Messianic Judaism is heir to a rich heritage of prayer, including both thousands of years of Jewish wisdom and the powerful, soul-stirring teachings of our Master, Yeshua the Messiah. This book is a brief introduction to prayer in Messianic Judaism. Jewish prayer is unique, both in its fundamental ideas and concepts and in the way it is practically observed. In this book, we examine the concepts of prayer from a Messianic Jewish perspective. Messianic Judaism is a type of Judaism. That means that the historical prayers of the synagogue across the centuries are our prayers. It was our sages, rabbis, poets, and prophets who penned these prayers and entrusted them to us, the Jewish community. Accordingly, this book looks at the aspects of prayer that we hold in common with all of Judaism. We delve into the discussions of the scholars recorded in foundational, ancient Jewish works such as the Talmud and Midrash to see how they conceptualized prayer. Embarking on a journey into the depths of Messianic Jewish prayer can be daunting, but every journey begins with a small step. This accessible and informative book will welcome you into this rich world of prayer.
Yes, i really liked it. Gives me a better understanding of the prayers i'm using. The chapter on Amidah is particularly good. And I especially liked the chapter on the "Our Father" prayer. I'll be able to pray it with greater understanding. I didn't like the short chapter called "Declaration of intent for Messianic Gentiles", which incorporates a prayer from believers in Transylvania! Why? Blood lines do not make a child of Abraham so why would a believer need to ask permission of the "heavenly assembly" or the "earthly assembly" to serve the God of Israel?
This book is a gentle introduction to some of the prayers and the prayer habits that Jesus and the apostles likely kept. I'd recommend it if you're interested in adding more structure to your prayer life and you're interested in exploring the Jewishness of the early Christian community.
Coming from a pentecostal background this information was difficult to digest at times. I really had to let it all marinate awhile after reading a few pages. Its not that I was having trouble believing that the information was good or even valid, but that there was just so much information that was new to me. I would reccomend this book to anyone wanting a deeper prayer life.
I enjoy this book even though I don’t agree with some of the opinions of the author I love and appreciate the passion for the traditional prayers and you can feel that in the words of this book . I found this book most helpful in learning the prayers as well
Ever wonder why the Jewish people pray three times a day? Answers start here. And if you're studying the Bible and becoming intrigued by the many Messianic Synagogues and Congregations popping up all over, start here. It's an enlightening book. Simple, but profound in it's simplicity. And without any judgment at all, provokes thoughts of how and why Christians in the modern age have gotten it wrong.
