“Red, a Children’s Musical” by author Jane Tesh and author-songwriter-playwright Joni Klein-Higger, is a delightful children’s musical. It’s a re-imagining of several familiar fairy tales and nursery rhymes in a “fractured fairy tale” style that kids will enjoy reading and performing. Red Riding Hood creates some funny situations when she rewrites several fairy tales and nursery rhymes on stage to prevent the wolf from eating her grandmother.
The show includes scenes from Little Red Riding Hood’s story, Little Miss Muffet, Little Bo Peep, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and Cinderella. The play features catchy and entertaining songs throughout as Red attempts to “fix” things for the better, but only makes them worse. The final scene gives us our “happily ever after” as the FBI, Fairy Tale Believers, Incorporated, appear to save the day.
This musical is a great addition to schools looking for light-hearted entertainment to accompany their Language Arts Unit on Fairy Tales, Myths, and Legends. What is especially appealing is the large number of parts available to the students; 21 singing and speaking parts. This gives many students the experience of singing and performing in a theatrical production.
