The effective means for an undiscovered, perfect murder is illusive. The bottomless fear of discovery has kept most of us from the real life dastardly deed. But what about authors who need to craft a believable plot? Those who kill "fictionally" will find this book a valuable resource. A book that covers all types of poisons would be the size of an encyclopedia, and is not needed by writers' in search of a believable method for their criminal to dispatch their victim. This handbook will discuss poisons a "normal" person could get with little or no trouble, and if done right will leave little or no trace back to the murderer. Have fun planning your perfect fictional murder by poison.
This guide addresses a variety of poisons that includes oils, plants, industrial, metals, and animal. It doesn’t cover street drugs, which the author felt was unnecessary, given how well known their effects are on people. The focus of this handbook is on poisons that are common and reasonably easy to obtain.
At only 90 pages long and using a large font, this is a quick read. The author provides useful information on how long death would take to occur with most poisons. He also offers brief descriptions on creating poisons from specific substances.
I wish he’d given more details with respect to some of the plants, however, and provided photos or illustrations. If a specific poisonous plant or animal is key to a novel plot, details are often important to readers. While this book offers some good ideas, further research will be necessary. Still, this guide is a good starting point from someone who clearly knows his topic.
